There are two types of sex chromosomes: X and Y. One of each is contributed by each parent.
Males have two distinct sex chromosomes: XY. Females have two of the same kind of sex chromosome: XX.
Mother supplies only an X chromosome, while father can supply both types. If the father’s sperm is carrying a Y chromosome, the baby will be a boy. If it is carrying an X chromosome, the baby will be a girl.
Semen contains equal numbers of Y and X sperms.
Difference between “boy sperm” and “girl sperm” in a nutshell:
BOY SPERM (Y):
- smaller
- faster
- more sensitive
GIRL SPERM (X):
- bigger
- slower
- tougher
How is knowing this helpful if you’re trying for a boy? (http://how-to-conceive-a-boy.blogspot.com/search/label/shettles%20method)
Not all sex determination systems are genetic in nature. And, some species don’t even have a sex determination system!
Did you know that there are some really interesting sex determination systems in animal kingdom?
For instance, baby alligators’ sex is determined by the temperature at which the egg was incubated. Some snails practice sex change: adults start out male, and then become female. In tropical clown fish, the dominant individual in a group becomes female - while the other ones are male!
On the other hand, earthworms and some snails are hermaphrodites.
A few species of lizard, fish, and insect are all female and reproduce by parthenogenesis.
In some bacteria, sex is determined by infection. Ok, I won’t pretend I understand all this, but it's interesting!:)
Well... this may be a wives tale, but as far as I know, it has very high success rate.
Boys: Male sperm swim faster but die sooner. If you are trying for a boy, having sexual intercourse the day of ovulation may increase your chances.
Girls: Female sperm swim slower but live longer. If you are trying for a girl, having sexual intercourse 2-3 days before ovulation and abstaining afterwards may increase your chances.
Good Luck

what can he do to conceive boy
Start wearing boxers!
Wearing tight fitting underwear increases the heat around the testes. That can lower the sperm count, which consequently decreases your chances to make a boy. Wearing loose fitting underwear helps keep the testes cooler.
Have a cup of coffee!
Right before sex, drink a caffeinated beverage. This makes the Y-sperm more active.
Keep your cool!
If father is under constant stress it may be more difficult for him to make a boy.
Make your woman come!
Orgasms during sex are always a good thing, but if you're trying to conceive a boy you should also know that woman's orgasm is useful in more ways than one. After orgasm, woman's body produces substances that makes the vaginal environment more alkaline, and thus more welcomed for the y-sperm (boy). The contractions which accompany an orgasm help move the sperm into the cervix. That in turn gives the y-sperm (boy) an extra chance at being available when the egg is ready for fertilization.

Hi there.
At mums group we all looked at the Chinese gender chart and it seriously worked for every one of us. It was after they were born but it managed to tell us correctly the sex of all our babies (12 i think). I don't believe in much of that stuff but it really worked!
Have you looked at it?
I'll find a link for you. There's heaps of them so just google and you'll find stacks.
Might be another tool to use in your mission to concieve a boy?

According to those calender things, I can only conceive a boy 1 month out of the year.
I'm a little iffy on how accurate they are now

How is My Baby’s Sex Determined?
If you’re interested in at-home gender selection, the first thing you must understand is that a woman can not biologically determine the sex of her child. Every woman has eggs that contain X chromosomes. If the sperm that fertilizes the egg contains a Y chromosome, the woman will give birth to a baby boy. However, if the sperm that fertilizes one of these eggs contains another X chromosome, she’ll give birth to a daughter.
When a man (http://pregnancy.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Male_Fertility) ejaculates, between 200 and 400 million sperm are released into the woman's vagina. Some of these sperm contain Y chromosomes, while others contain X chromosomes. However, only one sperm is needed to fertilize an egg. All theories regarding how to conceive a boy using at-home gender selection are based on the belief that couples can create an environment that gives an advantage to the sperm containing the Y chromosome
Urban Legends
If you’ve publicly announced your desire to conceive a son, you’ve probably heard a few off-the-wall tips. While most experts insist folk wisdom and superstitions can’t help you select the gender of your unborn baby, there are many happy parents who believe these strategies will work. Either way, there’s no harm in trying the following tips:
Change your diet to include lots of red meat, salty snacks, and cola soft drinks.
Let your partner initiate sex and focus on his pleasure. Legend says if the man climaxes first, you’ll conceive a baby boy.
Schedule your lovemaking sessions for odd numbered days of the month.
Have sex at night, preferably when there’s a quarter moon in the sky.
Have as much sex as possible, since many people believe more boys are conceived during the “honeymoon” phase of a relationship.
Have the man drink coffee before sex, since this causes the sperm with Y chromosomes to become more active.

The Odds of Having a Boy or a Girl
You may have heard it from your know-it-all in-law, or a snidely friend who happens to have one-of-each, or maybe even your doctor: after having 2 or 3 boys, you might as well forget about ever having a daughter, because the odds are you're going to keep having boys. Or if you've only had girls, that the odds are stacked against you for having a boy.
Well, my dear, we are about to take a look at data from over 6,000 families in the US, and you are about to become better informed than your MIL on this issue!
The 51/49 Boy/Girl Ratio
The ratio of 51% boys to 49% girls seen here is representative of overall US birth rates. There are many hypotheses about why there are slightly more boys born each year than girls, but no one knows for sure why this is so. Here are a couple of the theories:
Males are more fragile (male infants are less likely to survive their first year, and a man's expected lifespan is less than a woman's). The slightly higher conception rate of males is nature's way of evening out the balance.
As Shettles contents, Y-bearing male-producing sperm may have a speed advantage over X-bearing female-producing sperm, more often winning the race to fertilize the egg and resulting in more male conceptions.Regardless of the reason, the 51/49 ratio remains constant year to year throughout the US population.
