I was just watching the channel ten news and they had a story on about some environmental myths.
the third one: disposable nappies are not better for the environment than cloth nappies because more resources go into making the disposables than go into washing the cloth, and disposables take forever to break down. if only they actually mentioned what the MCNs were that they showed footage of it would have been a perfect story.
well done channel ten. :yelclap:

I've always had a laugh about the cloth vs disposable one. They based it on nappies that were soaked in expensive soakers, then washed twice daily (water consumption, detergents, electricity, and wear and tear on the machine), then put through a dryer, then (and this is my favourite one) the nappies being IRONED before being folded ready to use again. They are taking into account wear and tear on everything as well as energy consumption as well as cleaners that go into the ground. Wear and tear was taken into account because they believed that the washing machine being overused when nappies were used meant it wouldn't last as long, leading to more having to be produced and old ones ending up in landfill. I have to really laugh about that because my machine was bought at the same time as my mum's and mine has had to wash all the nappies and hers hasn't, yet hers had to be replaced recently and mine is still going strong. As for using the dryer, as convenient as this may be from time to time, using a dryer is not good for the nappies and also if they are hung out on the line in the sun, soakers such as napisan don't need to be used as the sun sanitises it. Now to my favourite point of ironing them who in their right mind would iron a nappy??? I'm talking about towelling squares as they are the ones that one study was based on that said that disposables were better. Oh, it was also based on the average baby going through 3 or 4 nappies in a 24 hour period. What the??? Even in disposables they shouldn't be left more than an hour in the same nappy so that's a load of hogwash right there. I've seen what happens to babies whose parents leave them in the same nappy only changing a couple of times a day to save money, and it's just plain cruel what I've seen :(
They took cost into consideration and with the above costs of cloth, they then compared it to using the cheapest nappies on the market, buying in bulk, and only changing them a few times a day so disposable nappies came out cheaper in that one study. Once again, I say, I sat there laughing at the screen and that study :p
*no offense to those who iron nappies, I'll just never understand it but you can feel free to do my ironing if you love the chore that much*

I saw it too! My husband thinks I'm nuts - a nappy flashed up and I yell "Hey! That's a baby beehind! And they've hung it on the line the wrong way!!"

How are you supposed to hand them???

They showed the nappy being pegged at the top, so the nappy hangs down beneath it. If you do this too much over time it stretches (and completely wrecks) the elastic that goes around the legs.
It's better to lay a MCN long-ways on the washing line (ie so the elastic runs parallel to the line) or better still, laid out flat on a drying rack.
