Hi. I have just converted to cloth and have been using bambino mio nappies. I love them, but just read through the instructions and it says to wash the nappies in 'non-biological' washing stuff. I have been just soaking them in napisan and then washing them in water cause I don't want to buy the special washing powder made for the particular brand (it's like $25 a pack). So can anyone tell me, am I doing the wrong thing? What should I be washing them in instead?

Stop the Napisan, it's not needed on MCNs.
Just wash them with half the regular amount of your normal detergent.
I buy "Earth Choice" liquid, only $2 per bottle, one bottle would probably do a year's worth of MCNs!

i use earth choice for alot of things and i have for a few years now, with bub number one on the way its good to know its good for nappy's as well.
i read alot of web sites including the manufactures instructions saying not use use napisan as it can damage the materials and shorten the life of the nappy if that make sense.
"Non-biological" means things like Bio Zet. So long as you don't use a detergent like that it is ok. I use OMO.

Deifanately stop soaking them. Theres no need.
I just use whatever we have in the laundry at the time and only half a scoop. Im now thinking to give Earth Choice a go.....sounds good!

DONT SOAK THEM!!
soaking is the worst thing for MCNS!
there is NO need for it what so ever! the sun gets rid of any stains in the nappies and kills more germs then nappysan ever would.
not to mention soaking them will coat the fibres and make your nappies less abosorbent making them repel any liquid
what you should do is do a strip wash straight away and never let the nappysan touch your nappies again!
or so a few hot washes in a temp of about 60 degrees!

I buy 2 different kinds of washing powder - I buy the stuff with the fabric softener in it, for clothes towels and sheets, and then I buy the cheapy plain one for the nappies.
Basically you want a washing powder that has no enzymes or special stuff in it. Plain and basic  If it has little blue bits, it's too complex, just get plain old Duo or Spree

So when i take them off just rinse them out and then what? I only wash every night or every second night so do I just let them dry before I wash them? Or do i have to keep them wet? someone said keep them wet that's why I was using napisa. Have stopped that now!
Ooops I was using Bio zet and had no problems at all - no stinky nappies and no absorption probs
You don't even have to rinse just wee ones if you don't want.
We just rinse poopy ones... all used nappies get tossed into a DRY nappy bucket (with lid) and then washed every 2nd-3rd day, whenever the bucket is full.
We use trimat sensitive powder from Aldi.. I use one level tablespoon.
I generally do a pre-rinse with no detergent, then was on a regular cycle with time save.
No soaking, no fabric softener, dry in sun.
No smelly nappies either. :D

all MCN should be dry pailed
dry pailing is jsut rinsing off an solid waste and putting it into a empty dry bucket. You dont need to rinse the wee ones at all.

all the info you need should be in those 2 threads :)
:cleanwindow:I agree...I have been soaking my Bambino Mios in Napisan with no worries...absorption is fine and no smell! And they're just layers of cotton. Only now it's summer would I consider water soaking them and letting the sun do most of the work or a little detergent.
My understanding is that the difference between the bio/non-bio etc is just a matter of enzymes, not a HUGE difference in what they actually do, just how and all that. I guess the key is rinsing them really well.
As for the earth choice, I would say if you have a baby prone to sensitive skin, just watch them. My little one came out in eczema ALL OVER with the earth choice wash, and NONE where his (napisan soaked) nappies were! Poor little man. I am using eco-store, which is a bit more expensive but still easy to buy at the supermarket - skin looking way better and no adverse reaction yet!
Any thoughts let me know : )
