Earth Hour reminded me-----what's the go with some offices and shops leaving their lights on at night? What an obvious waste of energy!

It's often a security issue

Is it? I'm sure there are other ways of securing the place, instead of leaving the lights on! Why don't we households also start doing the same thing? :)

Many stores use low-voltage lights that don't suck up that much energy. The "Exit" signs that are always lit up don't use a lot at all, so I imagine security lights would be similar.

Having worked for an insurance co, - there are way less reported break-ins on well lit premises that dark ones regardless of security and alarms.

Now working for a property-developer - we have permanent outside lighting on all of our properties/buildings as there is way less to no graffiti on well lit up buildings and car parks etc.

Our insurance co won't cover our work sites unless they are lit up like the MCG at night.

It costs more money to replace materials and windows and stock and clean up graffitti than it does to leave a light on.

We are now installing blue filters to deter druggies from shooting up.

It's not alwasy as easy and obvious as people thinks.

Although I dont work in either industry as you do I was going to say the same thing....

Being a criminal at one stage in my life, not breaking into places but anyway, you look for the darkest areas so you're less likely to get spotted by the cops or any nosey neighbours etc. And most offices only leave low lights on, not the ones they use every day.

Video cameras run on electricity too, as do alarms. The other ways to use security on your office or property usually involve electricity, so to use a light to light up so that people can see into the shop at night, you can see if someone is in there when they shouldnt be, as already stated by KayteO, works best.

And that is the way it should be.:yelclap:

The earth is dying, I don't really think our earth would care about insurance issues.

Big business/small business...turn em off!!:banghead:

All it takes is for a small business to have a single break-in not covered by insurance to have it shut down and small corner shops are far better for the environment than big businesses such as woolworths or coles too so I guess it's a trade off. I'd rather see a little light on than have them go out of business due to a break in that insurance doesn't cover. The light we leave on is only on overnight and it's a flourescent light which take very little power. When we didn't have the light on, we had a break in and a lap top, some cash, and our camera were taken. It's more than just insurance with that, there were photos of kids on that camera and on the computer and there was stuff on the lap top about the children in the centre including DOB, address, phone numbers, all their personal details so it was a safety issue for all families at the centre. I don't agree with places that have every light in the building turned on and leave air-cons on overnight but a couple for security purposes won't hurt so much.

I dont get how people can be so worried about a business using a little extra power for security when they have their computer on???? That is ruining our earth also!

What about lighting stores. There is a pretty big one near us and they have EVERY light on. All display lights, to me, that's a waste.

 that's terrible! There's a difference between having display lights on to advertise what they have, and have security lights on :(

I work for a government department, and when there is minimal staff we do run minimal power, however, there are people there working around the clock, such as train controllers, security and the surveillance crew.

I know for a fact that the board rooms and meeting rooms have a sensor, so even if people forget to turn the lights off after a meeting, the lights will automatically turn off after 5 minutes if there is no movement in the room.

Unfortunately all people in my building have to use a computer each day for work, but we do have a policy that we have to turn it off when we leave and not leave it on stand by.

I personally don't leave mine all night......

We are talking about the millions of lights left on in empty office blocks right around the world, not talking about banning everything electrical.

I work for a govt department too and we have exactly the same. We also have a huge recycling system in place - landfill, compost and recyclable material bins.

I went along yesterday while I was at Big W and turned all their display lamps off, that were running normal globes, not even energy savers.

I know I really had no right to, but hardly anyone was going down that isle, and I didnt see the point....that way if someone wanted to see, they could turn it on. But yeah..anyway.......

There used to be a chandeler (sp?) shop down the road from me that had ALL its lights on ALL the time- day or night
huge waste of electricity, and huge distraction to passing cars on the highway next to it..

Yes - now that's a huge waste.

Incidently - I also think advertisment lighting is a waste as well.

I'd like to see the governemtn make every business and shopping centre install solar panels to feed back into the grids

I'd also like to see the governement(s) install solar panels on all schools - what a huge expanse of roof that's currently going to waste.
