My sister is getting married in August and wants to save money where she can. She wants me and the other bridesmaid to do our own hair and makeup.

Has anyone else done this, and if so did it look ok? She got a quote from a makeup person and they said it would cost $1000 for three of us to have hair and makeup done. Now she has cut that back to just her getting it done.

Anyone got any tips on making our makeup look professionally done? Are there any little products that would help achieve the 'wedding makeup' look?

$1000!! Thats a bit rich :shame: Seriously I would be searching out a new hairdresser / make up artist.

I was a hairdresser. YOu can pay up to $100 per
person for an upstyle. And make up wise around $50 seems reasonable to me.

I would look around honestly.

Doing your own make up is risky. Sometimes you can end up looking really white in photos etc. AS for hair, well If you just straighten it or blowdry it it might look ok?

yeah, I might see if my sister can 'shop around' a bit on that. I can understand wanting to cut costs as much as possible, but I do kind of think that the bridal party's makeup is sort of important and I certainly don't want to look pale in photos.

I am a sleep-deprived mother of a toddler (yet to have a full nights sleep since DS was born nearly 14 months ago), and I worry that if I do my own makeup I'll still look tired.

I did my own makeup and did all the girls makeup and it came out brilliant but then i am very good with makeup.

I have to say $1000 does not sound right to me how about getting one in for yourself.

If you have to do it yourself why don't you practise by looking at mags and try copying it.

As for hair i would definately get a hairdresser in they always do it better, as for makeup if you have a natural flair for it i say do it yourself, when i got married they never did as good as i could so hence why i did it myself.

My sis got married 2 years ago and asked me to do her makeup i did and it was brilliant if i say so myself even the photographer wanted to know who did her makeup he loved it.

If you are in melbourne i would do it for you.:D

im doing all this at the moment prices etc
i have found mary kay to be good its $75 per person but this also includes the lipstick she uses on the girls which is about $25 for the lippy so you will be paying $50 for the make up but yeah look around im sure you will find a cheaper person

If you do end up doing it yourself, I think this website (http://www.maybelline.com.au/ESSENTIAL_TIPS.aspx) would be pretty handy for tips.

However, I am sure that you can get makeup done professionally for a very small fee, as others have suggested. My sister paid a mint for my makeup at her wedding, and TBH, I hated it. This was at a "professional" shop- she got my colours all wrong and washed me out completely. IMO, I got a better result from using the lady at the local hairdressers! :)

I couldn't justify the expense of professional makeup for my wedding - esp. as the the results I have had from being in friends weddings weren't that great!

I did my own and my bridesmaids makeup myself - looked pretty good IMO :)

a few tips I picked up from various websites and a makeup artist friend:
- find a foundation and powder that doesn't contain sunscreen (esp. zinc oxide) this is the ingredient that reflects the light of flash photography and makes you look white
- always do a test run and take photos to see how it looks
- pink based lipstick (not brown) always looks best in photos and not too dark - it will look darker in photos, esp. if you have any black and white ones
- invest in a 'primer' (makeup base), it will keep your makeup on all day
- waterproof mascara for those teary moments!
- apply more blush than you usually do.. not clown like, but makes you not look so 'flat' in photos

that's all I can think of for now.. I'll post more if I think of them! hope it helps! :)

My advice would be to call a direct sell make up company like Mary Kay or Nutrametics. :) They offer free make overs (usually showing you how to do it yourself)... You can get some samples for free, and buy a couple of things that you will re use like a mascara and foundation.

It wont cost you much at all, and you will have the products for later on.

Or if you dont like that idea, you could go to Myer or somewhere like that and ask at the make up counters for a make over, same thing applies, if you buy a couple of things, they certainly dont mind spending time giving you advice and a couple of samples. :)

Goodluck!
