Hi there,

I have a 9 month old daughter and am 16 weeks pregnant with number two. We are moving to Townsville for my DH's job but it won't be until I'm about 28 weeks. Just hoping to get some advise from people that live in/and have had babies in Townsville. I don't have private health, so will be going through the public system. Can anyone recommend the best place for me to deliver? Also need to find a good GP that has lots of pregnant patients. Where is a good place to live etc. Really looking forward to moving up there . . we are from Brisbane originally but have just spent two very long years in Kalgoorlie (middle of nowhere in WA!). Looking forward to meeting some people. Also, how do I go about finding a playgroup etc?
Sorry for all the questions. . . .just a lot to think about at the moment. Any suggestions would be muchly appreciated

Hi

Congratulations on the pregnancy. Come on over to the sunny north, you will love it here. I used to live over in Perth and we just moved to Townsville in October last year although I did live here before my couple of years in Perth. I have a 19month old DD and a 2 week old DS. If you are going public for your birth then you will be at Townsville General. I cant really recommend a GP cause I didnt have one for my DS I just saw midwives. If you google playgroup queensland, they have a website that lists all the playgroups that are around, thats how I found my DDs playgroup. There are quite a few really nice areas to live up here but it just depends on what you like and want. If you like big properties try suburbs like Rupertswood, Rangewood, some parts of Kelso, or places further out like Herveys Range. If you like inner city style living try North Ward. There are some nice new estates in Kirwan and Willows, Kalynda Chase is a new estate too (not sure how to spell that). Willowbank is also quite new. Hope this is helful to you. Feel free to PM me if you want extra info or if you just want to chat. I hope when you get here that you will consider coming to one of our meets. They are usually Thursdays and on the weekends so partners can come too. Look forward to meeting you.

From Olivia :flowerz: :sunshine:

Hallo

i've just moved here from Brissy and both my husband and I love Townsville. The people are friendly and if you can stand the heat (they tell me it'll cool down soon!) you'll love it.

I moved here at 28 weeks and also went public, my little one is now 9 weeks old. I don't have a bad word to say about townsville hospital, they were excellent. All the midwives I saw were so friendly and helpful and my delivery (1st timer) went without a hitch. Can't say enough good things about the place, especially the midwives who did home visits afterwards, they are ANGELS. The only downside is sharing a room when you get down to the maternity ward but it's not too bad!

Don't know anything about playgroups sorry, still checking them out myself.

I live in Riverside Gardens at Douglas and we love it, so many shady walking paths along the river, great for the pram (if only I could get her to stay in it for longer than 20 mins without screaming).

I've found a nice young Doc in Belgian Gardens. Don't know if she's got many other pregnany patients though.

Hope this helps.

Hi there, I'm Conor and have been in Townsville since the start of December, the heat was a killer but once the humidity died down at the start of March it began to be a bit more bearable.

I went through the Townsville Hospital for the birth of my first bub a couple of weeks ago - it was awesome and everyone at the hospital was very supportive. We did the antenatal classes too and they were good - very accurate and gave you a good and realistic idea of what to expect. You need to be in the hospital system first before you register and that can take a bit of time so try and get onto that ASAP so you can then register for the classes if that's what you want to do.

The after-birth support and the community services available are also extremely good - I'm using them and can't find fault, have been a good resource.

A lot of us on Bub Hub don't have family around so it's good to have that additional support of people in the same circumstances as well as everyone else. We're a great bunch !!!

Look forward to meeting you in a few months.

Conor

Hi there!

My name is Sara. I am mum to 2 girls, Briley and Colby. Both girls were born at the Townsville Hospital and i don't have a real bad word to say about it.

Seeing as you will be birthing in the public system, your only option will be the Townsville Hospital. Depending on when you are due, the new Birth Centre might be opened and you might be lucky enough to birth there.

Most GP's in Townsville do Shared Care. I went to Hyde Park Medical Centre during both pregnancies and found the continunity of care really good. Once you reach are certain stage of your pregancy you will be required to go out to the hospital antenatal clinics but i am pretty sure its only once a month.

Your other options is to go out to "The Hut" and see Karen the Midwife who runs a clinic on Tuesdays and Thursday i think it is. I can get you her number if you like. Just PM me and I will PM you back the details. I am pretty sure Olivia(roalston) went with Karen so she might be able to give you her opinion on how she found it.

Other than that, they are pretty much your options as a public patient in Townsville. If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask.

Wishing you all the best during your pregnancy.

Looking forward to getting to know you....

Take Care!

Yeah I did go and see Karen, thats why I didnt have a GP cause I saw her instead. I thought she was good, you can choose your times and you dont have to sit around for ages as can sometimes happen at the hospital or at a GP, oh...and its free. The Hut is located at the back of the upper ross community centre. If youd like Karens number just PM me. Even if you dont want to see her she would be able to give you more advice about birthing options and GPs around.
