Hi,
Does any one have any tips on how to get rid of cradle cap? Can you get rid of it, or does it just go away by itself? Paige has it on her head and under one eyebrow... I've tried vaseline, but it didn't seem to do much.
The old fashioned way is baby oil (but that is a mineral), the new fashion way is natural oils like olive oil or sweet almond oil etc..
- maybe put it on before bed so they don't look "slick" all day and get oil on everything.

Olive oil worked really well for us. I put it on after an evening bath and left it on all the next day (she looked like a little used car salesman!) and then before her next bath I brushed her hair through with a stiff brush. Sometimes it takes a few applications:)

Baby oil and there is a cream just for cradle cap but I can't remember the name of it.
This is probably gonna sound horrible, but I scraped the cradle cap off DS head with a business card. I softened it first with baby oil, or whatever oil I had in the kitchen, then gently scraped it off. You need to use a little pressure coz otherwise you wont get much off at all, but after a couple of days, doing it once a day usually before a bath to get the oil off, it was gone. Bubs head will look a little red if you do this, but as long as you are not scraping too hard and damaging the skin it will be fine after a short while.
My mum always told me that brushing bubs hair...or head if they have no hair...stimulates their scalp and helps prevent cradle cap. I have brushed DD's hair most days since we came home from hospital and she has only ever had a mild case of it. I hardly ever brushed DS's hair coz he had less than DD does and he had pretty bad cradle cap in the first few mths.

Thanks guys. I'll give the olive oil a go first! Do you have to warm it up or anything, or just whack it on?
That's interesting about the hair brushing. I haven't brushed her hair at all... someone gave me a baby brush but it's really soft - I'll have to try to find a harder one (or get one of hubby's business cards!) :D
A baby brush is all i use, just make sure when you brush bubs hair that you are brushing her scalp as well...does that make sense?
I would just put the oil straight on, maybe warm it a little by rubbing it in your hands first.

Bi carb and water - mix it up to make a paste, put it on, let it dry, wash it off in the bath, then dry with a towel (gently rubbing her scalp as you dry).
I did this twice with DD2 and it was all gone and didn't come back.
If you leave it alone it will go away on its own but it takes ages.
I used cradle cap oil as well and then I would put a beanie on my DS, so I could put it on him during the day and not have him rub it all over the place, and also it warms their head up more and loosens the cradle cap, so it comes off a bit easier when u brush it.

Thank you!! Lucky her cradle cap is not red or weeping (that sounds nasty), just crusty yellow.... I'll let you know how we go!

We used the leftover "stretch marks" spray oil, Palmer's I think it was. Smelled great and after leaving it on overnight, we brushed it out with a fine tooth comb.

Like someone else said - go the bi-carb. Make it into a weak paste, leave on for a couple of hours, then rinse off, dry and brush hair as usual.
Should only take 1-2 goes to get rid of it.
I either used Olive oil or baby oil and left it in for about 2hrs and use a tooth brush to remove the cradle cap. I have no complaints about that yet.

i am another bi-carb user and water user.
my son had what my MCHN called "the worst case of cradle cap she'd ever seen" but i followed her advice of bi-card and water and it cleared up i also used baby oil to soften the bits left behind during the day so when it came bath time at night the bi-carb would take it away.
