View Full Version : why did you pick newborn over 12month old
Hi
I was just wondering, for those who circd in the first 6 weeks, why did you pick newborn over 12 month old??
Our DR told us we could do it as newborn under local or 12 months under general.
so what made you choose newborn?

Firstly, a local anaesthetic is much less traumatic than a general. Secondly, newborn babies don't "fiddle" so they leave it alone to heal whereas a one year old would probably keep touching it which might make it heal more slowly.

:iagree: You said everything I planned to :)
I was thinking of posting the same thread. Not sure if we are having a boy or girl, but if it is a boy he will be circumcised, the doctor that does it in my area likes to do it before 8 weeks, not sure why though?? I was thinking around 4 weeks might be a good age at least i could give him panadol afterwards. Has anyone had their boy done any earlier and given them pain relief??
No negative opinions on circumcision please.

I had my son done at 3 weeks. The surgeon who did it said it was fine to give him baby panadol because he was already 4kg by that stage. I only gave him two doses because he really didn't appear to be uncomfortable.

Yep :iagree: aswell. Another reason was that in our opinion, the earlier it was done the less likely he was to remember it. I think he was 5 wks when the procedure was performed.

:iagree: Yep I'll concur!!
My DS was done at 8 weeks, and frankly I didn't see any signs that he was in severe pain at all. He was smiling at the nurse through the whole procedure, and I gave him panadol for about 24 hours afterwards to keep him comfortable. He had no change to his feeding or sleeping routine because of it.
I think a local is much quicker and easier for a child to recover from and you don't have to get it done in hospital so it's cheaper (ie no anaesthetist costs, paying for the room etc).

we got DS1 done at 3 months and DS2 at 3 weeks, not really much difference between those 2 ages I didn't find, I wouldn't leave it any later though as the others have said, they start to find and play
In 2005 my son had his done on Day 3 in a private hosital. My OB only does it in the hospital, not in his surgery. Otherwise we would have had to arrange it with another doctor within the first 4 weeks.
We knew we were having a boy so I made it very clear with my OB we would need him to do it. My sister in law had a lot of negative pressure from nurses when she wanted it done.
My advise is whatever your belief, discuss and decide before you give birth...even if you don't know the sex.
