View Full Version : How do you co-sleep?
Hi,
I know this sounds dumb, but I'm trying to be serious.:o Just wondering on how it works... esp if you don't have a cot!!
Because my DS sleeps like a starfish... arms out, legs out. He also kicks in his sleep and raises both legs and slams them down in his sleep. DP weighs more than me and DS rolls into DP's back (usually head first). I am worried that he might get squished. When we do co-sleep, one of us (usually DP) gets fed up and moves to the lounge during the early hours of the morning.
Also, what do you do in the day time? Esp if you've got a bub who is just starting to crawl. Do you have a rail up or push the bed up against the wall? Just have a mattress on the floor? Use pillows??

our situation is a little diif to some, my dh works 5/7 nights a week on night shift so as he's getting in we're getting our in an hour or so. Elise (dd) has been in with us since day 1 to me its natural having her there and i think id get lonely if she wasnt coz dh has only been doing this shift since i fell preg, well after actually i was 7mths so at the time i didnt mind having the whole bed to myself.
i guess it depends on you and your partner how you want it to work. my dh thinks its time for her to go into a cot but i think it should be up to me when it happens coz im the main one doing the co-sleeping mainly. also makes it easy for night feeds as elise is still breast fed (10 1/2 mths )
as for the day time naps i just use the couch...we are up/downstairs untit so its hard to keep an eye on her...or she just naps on my lap like she is now, while having a feed.

I always used a porta cot in the beginning, but always fell asleep whilst breastfeeding. Daytime naps were always in the portacot and when he/she was old enough to climb out, they would come straight into my bed.
LOVE PORTA COTS, i've had normal cots, but found i hardly ever used them LOL
With Ds 1 i co slept for nearly 12 months...
Ds2 is 10 months and we still all sleep together... Although Dp now says its time to ship him out to his own bed.. but as i still BF its just too easy having him right there next to me:rolleyes:

Thats what we do too, though I have a cot pushed right up against our bed for extra room on hot nights. MJ gets bf to sleep, then goes to bed at night in the porta cot till she wakes around 10.30. Then she comes in with us till we all get up in the morning. I find i cant settle myself until she's snuggled up next to me.
Of a day for the morning sleep I bf to sleep then put her in the porta cot. Of an afternoon I lay down & have a "nanna nap" with her
have you had your child sleeping with you from day one?
and how old is your child?
He is 7 months old and no, he doesn't always sleep with us. He used to sleep in a porta-cot at the end of our bed and only occasionally with us, but now he is in his own room at night. Well at least he starts off there. :)
I am really worried that he will fall off our bed. It is quite high. If he is sleeping in there in the day time, I spend the whole time checking to see if he is starting to wake up. And at night if he is hard to settle, I put him in with me, but I can't sleep until he is asleep incase he rolls or puts a pillow over himself. And then I only sleep lightly.
Our first DS co-slept with us until I was about 6 months pregnant with our 2nd DS - he was about 2 1/2yrs old!! His favourite position was starfish right in the middle of the bed with DH and I holding on to the edges of the bed!! We loved having him in our bed but it was time, and he made the move really well.
Now our 9month old DS sleeps in our bed and has done since day one - he is a really light sleeper though so poor DH usually ends up on the couch!! We will probably try to move him out at about 12months but that was the plan for DS1 too!!

Hi there,
I have co slept since I was in the hospital, and still am nearly 9 months later.
I have the cot in a "sidecar"next to our bed with the side right off as this gives us more room. I started doing this from about 3 months ( b4 that DS was against the wall next to me)
I am also wondering how this is gonna work when he starts crawling properly and walking....guess I'll have to start teaching him to climb down the bed:laughing:
I can't imagine not having DS right next to me, I would miss him like crazy!
Also is just sooo handy for the 3-4 nite feeds....bugger getting up for that!

we have two very different bubbas. DD likes her own space- she sleeps in her own room in her cot- though she usually wakes up and I go in and lie with her for a few minutes (or fall asleep with her) on a mattress we have on the floor.
I feed DS to bed and he usually goes down to sleep in his own bed- which has a rail so he can't fall out. He wakes and either cries or just gets up and comes into bed with us.
I have recently weaned them in the night, but they still wake- like to know I'm nearby I'm sure.
They are 19 months!
Do what works for you and your bub!!
