Hi

My friend is 37weeks pregnant and she saw the doctor today who advised her that she is really tight and her cervix is still closed. Any suggestions on how to soften the cervix as she is really worried about the birth now as this is her first. The doctor also told her to expect a 3.5kg baby so this has made her more stressed.

Hi darl,
Evening primrose oil is good for softening the cervix. Tell your friend to take 2caps up to 8 times a day. And you can insert 2caps into the vagina at night. But if you do that you have to be careful about infection. Get a pack of good quality hygenic gloves to aviod infection.
I am seeing a herbalist who has me on a tonic which has Red raspberry, squaw vine, blue cohosh & golden seal. These all help to soften the cevix and tone the uterus. They can also induce labour. Which is why I'm taking them.
Hope this helps. Best of luck to your friend.

Trish

Hi All
I've heard and read that sex should be good for cervix ripening as well (sperm apparently has cervix softening properties). Although MANAGING sex might be a bit difficult with a huge baby bump in front. But best of luck :D

Sex, sex and more sex. As mentioned by xkwzit. Sperm has cervix ripening properties. Another proven aid is raspberry leaf tablets. By far the most succesful method however is sex - it is probabley the most dificult as well though!!

It helped me give birth rather successfully to a 4.77kg baby so I'm sure it can help your friend. It is also a good idea for her to do perineum stretching exercises. I did these and it helped to reduce the amount of tearing.

Good luck to your friend.

Normal gestation is 38 - 42 weeks. Your friend *could* be up to 5 weeks from giving birth.
It is a bit early to be worrying about the cervix isn't it?
Internal exams have been shown to yield information of very questionable relevance, and serve to only provide a source of anxiety to countless women.
Along with the chance of introducing infection, I personally would never allow one unless very strongly medically necessary.
Every womans body reacts so differently to pregnancy, some women can be walking around partially dilated for a couple of weeks or more, while others can have a cervix which is firm and closed right up until labour begins.

Please let your friend it is absolutely nothing to worry about this early in proceedings, her body knows what it is doing, trust and patience is the key.

As for a 3.5 kg baby, my son was 3.580kg, and that was 7lb 14 oz, that is not a big baby at all, I know of plenty ncb mums who have birthed 9 and 10 pounders with no problems at all.
The incidence of a woman growing a baby which is too big for her to physically give birth to is very, very rare, our bodies are simply much, much better designed than that.
