My 4 week old has a weepy eye with some puss around it. I have been bathing it with salt water all arvo as I have just noticed it today.

Would you worry about this? It doesnt appear swollen. Should I take her to the doctors?

What would you do?

Im a first time mum and any advice is much apreciated.:(

Thanks
Belinda

dont panic honey :hugs: it sounds very familiar - I think it has something to do with their tear ducts and if that is it.. it is extrememly common...

if you are breastfeeding - the best thing you can do is use some breastmilk to rinse the eye (I think at each feed??) - otherwise just use a saline solution (chemist??) to clean after each nap..

if it gets swollen ..red and / or bubs gets a temp - go to the GP ... otherwise it sounds like a blocked duct...

I agree with veve - sounds like a blocked tear duct. Very common and nothing to worry about. Breastmilk works wonders! Also, when you clean it wipe once only with each cotton ball/pad then chuck. I would probably get her to the doctor anyway just to be sure. If it is something nasy, like conjunctivitis then it's better to get it treated asap, prevent it getting too much worse. I'm sure all will be fine!!

I agree...it sounds very much like a blocked tear duct. I think my DS started displaying problems with blocked tear ducts at around 4 weeks too.

We were told to massage the tear duct down towards the end of the nose. We clean his eye with cotton buds at each bath every night. We also push the gunk out upwards, then wipe away with a cotton bud.

Constantly cleaning the eye with saline solution will only prevent infection...not stop the gunk.

You can go and see a GP about it to confirm it...but they wont do any operations till bubs is one yr old.

great info guys .. :smiliedance:

- I just wanted to add Belinda - that quite often the tear duct will fix itself (ie not all bubs need an operation to fix it... I didnt' want you to panic when you read that :) ) - try the breastmilk.. and when you next take bubs to the CHN or GP .. just mention it...

Like the others have said...breastmilk, breastmilk, breastmilk!
It's also good on little scratches that babies get from their fingernails...actually I'm yet to find a problem that breastmilk doesn't cure!

Hi

Is that the same thing as sticky eye? My DS had that around 4 weeks too. We took him to the GP who gave him eye drops and it cleared up in 1-2 days.

Sounds like what both my bubs had on and off til they were around 2mths old. Try what the others have suggested and it should go away on it's own, with both my bubs it would be there for a day or two then disappear for a few days then come back. I wouldn't worry too much unless she gets a temp or it gets swollen/red, like veve said :)

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I gave the breast milk a go and her eye looked better the next day. I put more breast milk on the following day and sure enough, her eye appears to be good as new.:smiliedance: :smiliedance:

Thanks again to all MUCH APPRECIATED:hugs:
