My DS was 10 days overdue and he weighed 9lb 3oz, 51cm and 36hc. I was so shocked when they told me how much he weighed because he was my 1st. The nurse couldnt believe it either and she weighed him again to make sure. My labour was 30 hours! I didnt need stiches either which was another shock. Maybe that's why he took so long to show his beautiful face.

I just had a growth scan done today and they have told me she is 9lb 6oz and she isnt even born yet!!!!!!!!!I hope to heaven that they induce real soon cos I dont think I can pass a whopper like that without some holy intervention.I see the quack in the morning so see what happens then but as for sleep tonight?HA!
I was induced 1 1/2 weeks early with my daughter and she weighed 6'9, 48cm long. 2.5 hour labour no pain relief
I was induced 2 days after my EDD due to high blood pressure, he weighed 7'11 and was 51cm long.

You'd be very suprised what your body can do when its in the grips of labour!
Ds weighed in at 4.5kg(dont know it in pounds) and measured 54cm, believe me it was hard work pushing that one out, but I managed it and I'm sure you will too!
Good luck :D

Delainey ... when are you due?
My son was born 4 weeks early and weighed in at 13lb 2oz. Admittedly I had a c/section as I had had one previously due to my pelvic shape being really strange (oh great, another thing for me to be paranoid about!)
My mil is only 4'10" and had three boys naturally. The first was 9lb 5oz, the second 10lb 12oz and the third (my dh) was 7lb 3oz.
She said that her middle son was the easiest to birth ... my dh was the hardest even though he was the third and smallest!
Aparently, bigger babies don't tend to slip back up the birth canal between contractions whereas the smaller babies tend to. This means shorter time pushing and a quicker result. Often, there is less chance of tearing or needing an episiotomy with a larger child.
I hope all goes really well for you and that you have a virtually pain free birth!
Oh, and as for going on your and your dh/dp's weight at birth to gauge the size of your babies ... My dh was 7lb 3oz and I was 4lb 3oz ... my kids were 8lb 7oz and 13lb 2oz ... I don't think that there is any connection at all! I am only 5'3" by the way, so I was absolutley huge when pregnant!
Camrynsmum
27-09-2005, 07:33
That is a truely amazing weight at over 13lbs, you must have been really really big pregnant (and very uncomfortable I bet), may I ask if you had gestational diabetes or was your baby just big without a cause?
I had gestational diabetes in both of the pregnancies ... ironically very uncontrolled with my 8lb7oz dd and completely controlled with my 13lb 2oz ds! I was unable to diet control either time (tried really hard and was incredibly strict with it!), so ended up on 4 shots of insulin daily.
I think that my son was just destined to be a huge baby as he was incredibly long and looked like he was the size of a 4 month old at birth. I have a photo of him sitting on my knee at 1 day old and he looks like he is a lot older and there is no way that I can see that he could have fit inside me!
He didn't fit one of the usual hospital perspex cribs as his arms and legs were too long and every time he startled, he hit the sides really hard and would wake up screaming! So ... it was into a bed for him at a day old! He only lasted in a wooden cot at home for 4 ½ months then into a soft sided potracot as he just didn't fit into the wooden one without getting tangled in the bars! He was in a bog bed at 17mths as he was too big for his (standard size!) portacot.
Saying all this, he was the most relaxed baby I have ever known ... usually slept through his baths (really warm water helps!) and through getting undressed, weighed and then dressed again! Being the second child it was great as his routine very quickly fitted into mine.
Sorry, have more than answered your question and added a heap of waffle!
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b23/kytw/Scan10003.jpg
This is the photo I was talking about ... he is very chubby, but also very big!
Thought you might like the belly shot too ... it was taken the night before I had the c/section.
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b23/kytw/Scan10002.jpg
And this is Bella and Daniel taken a few months ago ... nothing of the chubby baby left at all!

Thanks for that Kyra, that information was great as I was quite intrigued and couldn't quite picture a newborn that size. As for the belly shot, your poor back, must've been really hard. Beautiful children though, well done!
Nathan was 5 days over due. My waters broke but no contractions so I got the injection after 10 hours. 15 hours after that with two epidurals (neither of them worked, apparently they don't work on 10% of people) and plenty of gas. He was 9lbs.
PJ was also 5 days over, though I'd had contractions for 3 days I was only 2cm when I went in to be induced, had to have my waters broken. Also had plenty of gas. He was born after 7 hours at 8lbs 4oz

Kyra would have to be the winner for the biggest baby - wow your amazing!!
The weight of my two pale into insignificance really, but for the purpose of the exercise I'll add them in:
DS1 - 7lb 9oz, one week late delivered by emergency c-section after 22hours
DS2 - 7lb 5oz, two weeks early, VB after 11hour labour
my son was... 8lb 12 oz. born the day after the estimated due date by induction.
Ok I am a newby to the chats.
For about 3 months my doctor kept looking at my tummy, shaking his head, saying I was bigger than I should be at that stage. At week 38 I had a scan & they estimated that I would have a 4.4kg baby & this estimate could go half a kilo either way - OK 3.9kg isn't too bad but 4.9kg is humungus!!!
My doc suggested that I have a c-section because although I could probably deliver the head, the shoulders may be an issue & the last thing I wanted was for the baby to get stuck.
Eight days early, my beautiful baby girl was delivered, weighing in at 3.960kg (8lb 9.25oz) - not the biggest in the nursery at the hospital but big enough.
I said during my pregnancy that I didn't want to have a c-section but now I look back on it as the best thing I did - I had a dream pregnancy and a relatively easy delivery, if you can call it that...

Hi I am new here and thought I would jump on in and share.
I can not beat the record but my dd was 8pound 11oz (3.96 kg). The ob picked up at the end that I would have a larger baby then the average he guessed about 3.5kg but he was out by a bit.
DD was to big for me to deliver and after 12 hours of labour I had to have an emergency c/s :(

I was just reading somewhere that a babys birth rate depends to a certain degree on the mothers birth weight and has nothing to do with the fathers size - so no more comments from the menfolk saying things like oooh, havent I got broad shoulders etc etc..
Having said that though - I cant see how that could be right considering the weight differences between subsequent pregnancies.
Has anyone found much truth in this?
I don't know how true it is .... I was 4lb 3oz and my babies were whoppers compared to me!
How did I end up with one at 8lb 7oz and the other at 13lb 2oz born at 37 and 36 weeks respectively????

Just thought I'd share my experience with this. My mum's firstborn (my brother) weighed 5lb 11oz (2.59kg) My firstborn weighed 5lb 11oz the EXACT weight as my mum's first baby and then my husband weighed 4lb 10oz at birth and my second son weighed 4lb 10oz at birth EXACTLY the same as his dad.
Very very freaky! In our family it seems gentics do play a part in birthweight from both sides.

Depending on which "DUE" date you use I was either 13 or 7 days overdue!!! She was nicely baked!! But she was born exactly 9 months after the day we "think" we conceived!!
My sister's bub Jessie was 4p 15oz or 2239.6g!! That was at 37 weeks! All her kids have been small but she says that it makes now difference to the pain!! Maggie is still heavier, only just and there is just under 3 months between them.

I was 9lb 9oz and my husband was 10lb so I would have been surprised if I had anything under 9lb.

I was in the 6lb mark and so was daddy, so we werent expecting a large bubba, but you should have seen the hospital chuck a mental over his weight - he's obviously got IUGR (intra uterine growth restriction), its not that he's genetically preordained to be a smaller bubba - shock, horror

My firts baby Bella was 9lbs 1oz and 7 days overdue !!!
My second baby Archie was 11lbs and 2 weeks eary (thank god he didn't stay in there any longer)
But I had him naturally in 7hrs with no drugs and no stiches !!!!!
My baby cousin was born a few months ago at 13lb 7 oz natural birth. This was after his mum had premature twin girls weighing 1lb 2oz and 1lb 6 oz, by c/s
Wow! 13lb 7oz and natural!
I thought Dan was big at 13lb 2oz ... there was no way I was having him naturally ... I had to have a c/s with Bella and she was only 8lb 7oz. Mind you, Dan was 4 weeks early and induction probably would not have worked anyway.
Wow Jodie that is a big boy and I bet he is gorgeous and yes definately love the person that perfected c/s
I found my big girl to be very contented and in fact never had a night feed from about 2 weeks old, wonder if its because they are bigger and more settled, hope that is the case for you.
Nicole isn't huge now but very tall. They say that they should triple their weight by their first birthday, she came close but has really slowed down her weight gain since she became more mobile.
Dan has only just doubled his birthweight (he is now 13.5kg, was 5.94kg born) and he is 2 years 9 months! He is also a tall boy at 101cm.
I guess the triple rule only applies to some!
Kyra I'd say our bigger hefalumps don't triple their weight (cause they had plenty to begin with) and the littler ones probably do.
They are all soooo different though aren't they.
Kyra did you find Dan to be a very contented baby, being bigger?
1st 4pound 13 ounces
2nd 8 pound 1 ounce
3rd 6 pound 14 ounces
Bronwyn ...
Dan was so contented, that he slept through his first bath!
The plunket nurse (in NZ) used to come around to weigh him etc and he would have slept through his bath and getting dressed before she got there, slept through getting undressed and weighed and then just slowly wake again with no fuss as we dressed him! He slept well from early on, ate incredibly well and fitted in really quickly to the routine I already had established with Bella. At 2 ½, he is still a very relaxed and "happy to adapt" little man with the usual 2yo little temper spats at times!
He didn't gain much weight because he had severe reflux and was on the go from 6 weeks onwards! He would lie on his back, dig his little heals in and push himself around. Bella did the same thing ... I guess I am destined to have kids that never sit still!
Kylah was 6p 9oz
Marcus was 8pd 6oz

Yes kelsta im petrified !!!!!!!!
Everybody is so lovely in reminding me of this any chance they get even strangers as they comment even to this day how big he is but then there is hope it doesnt always happen just the idea is scary
Actually im not so much worried about the overall size as i am worried about having a head circ bigger than the 38cm as there is no way i can do it again that big or bigger.
MY second bub was actually smaller (1st 9lbs 47cm 2nd 8lbs 4 oz 52cm), but he had a bigger head. My labour was also quicker and I didn't have any time for drugs - though epis don't work on me anyway!!

Ok I am 7 weeks away from my third baby's birth and am curious to know if anyone knows about the likelihood of the baby being near to or as big as its dad at birth??
My first son was only 6lb 13oz, to dad no 1 who was average height and build and he was 7lb when he was born. My daughter was 7lb 7oz and her dad was an 8lb baby when he was born.
I am worried because I am 5'4 and only weigh a non pregnant weight of 45 kg. (currently 57kg)I think I chose badly with this daddy> 6'2 and he was the biggest baby born in the hospital at that time- 12lb 4oz!!!! I have had a scan and this baby is very long for gestation and dont I know it! My ribs are stretched to the max and his head is engaged already. I have been told that the baby will gain alot of its weight for birth from 36 to 40 weeks. Has anyone with a small frame delivered a large baby before and how did you cope?? Or has any one heard of someone else going through this?? ...Kathy...
Hi Treightonsmum ...
I am 5'3" and had a 13lb 2oz boy @36 weeks. I had a c/s as I had had one with my first child, so I can't tell you what it would be like to delivery a larger bub than yours! (WOW!)
I just wanted to say that you are amazing and that I am sure that you will do extremely well this time ... apparently, the larger your baby is, the easier it gets (to a point, of course). My mil is only 4'11" an had 3 sons ... one was 8lb something, the next 10lb something and the last one was 7lb 3oz (my dh).
I don't know that Dad's size has much to do with how big bub will be at birth ... my dh is only 5'9" and not exactly huge, but my boy is going to be around 6'4" fully grown and quite solid with it!

I dont know whether the fathers birth weight is really much to go by but i have heard sometimes it is the case.
My bubs was 4.5kgs just an ounce off 10lb not anywhere near as big as Kyra's but he was very long. Im 5'4 & was born a normal 8lb bubs & so was my partner with him now being 6'4. I just got lucky (?) heh with a big baby i too know what you mean about having no room & ribs hurting etc i was the same i never got the "lightening" where bubs moves down once engaged. Bubs certainly did all his growing in the last month which is what is expected but he was always ahead in size all the way through. I didnt have an easy birth but that wasnt due to his size rather his head which is where dramas usually stem. Anyways dont stress about it too much all should go well & if it is making you feel anxious i would talk to your midwife/doctor about it & see what they have to say. Id say if they arent too worried about it then they see you as being fine maybe its cause of it being your 3rd bubs with no dramas on previous births.
My sisters fiance was a 13lb baby born & his mum was tiny as in like 5'1 gave birth to him no dramas but my sister has a fear of falling pregnant to him as she dreads having a baby that big.
Im sure all will go fine keep us informed ! :)

I feel like i gave birth to monster compared to half of you....
My DS was born 4 weeks early, in breech....I didnt have a c-section... but i did have an epidural - and i tore like you wouldnt believe
He clocked in at 13lbs 2.5 oz and 63 cm long. He was the 3rd biggest baby ever born at the hospital back in Auckland.
Im due in January with my next and the Dr's can tell from ultrasound that she'll be NOWHERE near as big..... even with their estimates they think 6lbs - but thats still 7 lbs less than my first lol - plus i feel a third of the size anyway :p
 WOW
Congratulations and I hereby hand over the biggest bub crown to you - well done on having a vb! I had a c/s with Dan, so have no idea what it was like to push out a bub over 13lb! :D
Dan was the largest bub at Wellington Womens Hospital in the past 10 years at 13lb 2oz ... I would hate to know how big the bigger bubs at Auckland Hospital were!
Do we breed them big in NZ or what???
wow i just wanted to say it is totally amazing what our bodies can do!

hey everyone!
My little boy Zachary arrived 17 days ago, 1 week overdue and he weighs 4.77kg, 10.5lbs, was born by C/S. I have a question though, do bigger bubs tend to lose more weight in the first week? Zac was down almost 11% and is still below the birth weight now. This is my first bub so not sure what to expect.
cheers
Tanny ;)
I think it depends on wether or not you are breastfeeding or formula feeding on how much weight they pick up again in what amount of time. I think this goes for any size baby not just larger babies.
Obviously they will gain weight though regardless of which way you feed!:p
I'm breastfeeding but due to the c/s my milk didn't come till 3rd of 4th day and by then his weight has plunged 500 grams. He is gaining weight since we got back from hospital but at a very modest rate, 80 grams so far. Am not sure if I'm doing something wrong? Or it's going to take them a little while to re gain birth weight?
Tanny
Someone else may be able to correct me if I am wrong.
But I do believe it can take quite a while for bub to regain the weight. Just try and feed bub whenever you can and I am sure bub will put the weight back on in no time.
Don't worry my milk didn't come in till the 3rd day either.;) You are not doing anything wrong at all, you are doing great.!

Hrmmm im not sure maybe call the hospital ? It wont hurt to have an answer better to be safe is always my motto ! I dont care how stupid i look hehehe.
My bubs was 4.5kgs & never lost a thing the midwives laughed at the hospital they all thought he was great being a big bub & even the one who came to the house after i came home 2days later said oh well he is obviously just going to be a big bub & he is heheh.
I know they are meant to lose weight in the first few days but im not sure if this is meant to continue as i said id call someone just to be safe.
Btw your little one is gorgeous !!!!!!

Hi Tanny, my bubs lost 300 gms in the first week after he was born - he didnt want to eat, but then in the next month alone he gained 1530 gms! The month after that he gained 1780. What a greedy little thing!
Both boys were exactly the same 8 pounds 12 ounces, except Ty was 50 cm long and Will was only 48.
thanks fellow mums for the comments, zac looks very pink and healthy and that's why the visiting midwife ruled out any ill health possibilities. He'll have another weight in on Sat and I'm quite stressed about it. Hopefully he'll put on more weight by then. Is it possible that my milk is lack of nutrients?
This might sounds like a silly questions but do breasfeed babies poo very runny? (like having an upset tummy) :o
Allyoo - lucky you as most bubs lost about 10% of their weight. We were joking that zac probably knows he's got a headstart and slack off now :D
Thanks again everyone, at least I don't feel alone and helpless now
Tanny
zara was 6 pound 3oz. so little!lol I know someone who was 15 when she had her first and he weighed 10 pound 11oz
Tanny ... both of my babies lost quite a bit of weight initially and took approx 6 weeks to reach their birthweight again. It is different for every child and if your little one is feeding well and gaining, then I wouldn't be worried!
He is gorgeous!

I took DS up to the hospital when his poo changed from black sticky ick to yellow really runny poo.
LOL:D The things we do.....
The best part is the hospital didn't think I was silly, they completely understood cause when I had DS they really drill into your head to look out for runny poo as a sign of bub being ill.
It's really comforting to hear from all of you, I feel much better now, thanks! You are so right Oscar's mum, we freak out easily with small little things that are insignificant, blame it on being a first time parents.:o
I have another question - bub seems to have a lot of yellow discharge in his eyes, especially when he is crying, my midwife is telling me to squirt some breast milk in it but it still hasn't improve. Has anyone else experience the same with their bubs? What's the cause of it I wonder? It must be very uncomfortable as his eyes are all gooey.
Thanks again!

My bubs had this its probably a blocked tear duct they usually clear up themselves just keep them clean i used salt water otherwise a saline solution does it. I would clean it every nappy change with cotton squares & salt water took probably a good 2wks & it went but if it gets worse or doesnt go away then you will need to take bubs to a doctor as a blocked tear duct can cause problems later on.
Zaiah was 8lbs 11 1/2
tanesha 8lbs 3/2
kynan was 9lbs 3ozs he nearly killed me i swear i wouldnt like to do him again:eek:
Tanny
How is your bubs eye going? Breastmilk should clear up the eye but obviously it hasn't so I would recommend taking bub the dr.
Hello Oscar mum,
The gooey stuff still there. I must say I haven't been vigilant with the breastmilk as I'm not sure if I should do it every nappy change or once a day? My midwife said to continue with the breastmilk treatment instead of antibiotic, hopefully it'll go away shortly. Will give it another go and see doc next week if the problem persists
Hope you have a wonderful new year!
tanny
You cannot squirt the milk in his eye often enough. I used to do it to DS when he had conjunctivitis probably 8 times per day both eyes.
It clears it up in no time, that breast milk is magic stuff.
hmmm...silly me, now I know where the problem is, I only do it once a day before bedtime, I'll do it every feed today.
Thanks!

Just a quick question, I know that this is slightly off subject, but am I better off buying 000 clothes to take to the hospital? My booklet says to take some 0000 and some 000 but I am guessing that most babies must be 000 is this right - these baby sizes are just so confusing!!
I had dr's telling me time after time during my PG that my little girl was too small and that I would have to be induced... i can't tell you how many U/S's I had I lost count, but everytime I went back the guy looked at me and said 'what are you doing back here, I told you last time everything was ok'. Then the dr's told me there was no amniotic fluid and the baby wasn't being fed by the placenta - they put me on high risk and couldn't give me a straight answer -
At 35 weeks I demanded to be released from High Risk and given permission to transfer to Family Birthing Unit - I didn't look back - my last 6 weeks (as I was a week overdue) was the most relaxing and enjoyable part of my PG. I was able to go through a 14.5 hr of 2min or closer contractions drug free and completely natural and gave birth to a healthy 7lb 7oz baby (3.4kg) There was absolutely nothing wrong with her, and the dr's made me stress for NOTHING!!!!!
I am hoping this next baby is that size or smaller - :p
PS: Little Pickle - I would maybe take a couple of 0000 just in case - I think we bought Hayley home in a knitted outfit from my mum it was so cute, but then she was in 0000's for a few weeks until she fit the 000's - just better to be on the safe side...

It depends on the size of bub.. Both of my girls were in 00000.. i didn't have any, but i took 0000. But my mum brought some 00000 for me to take them home in.
My girls didn't fit into 000 until they were nearly 5 months old.

littlepickle - Personally id get a few different sizes but dont go all out on one particular size until bubs is born & you know what size is right.
I had all mainly 0000 & a few 000 as i knew bubs was big but errr yeah heheh he only fitted into 000 so when we got home from the hospital we had a mad dash to get clothes & return all the newborn nappies we recieved as gifts heheheh.
So yeah have a few jumpsuits ranging in sizes that way your safe & have something until either your able to get out of the house or send someone else too !

As Kyra said of course she counts !!!! :)
She was an angel who may have only visited this world for a short time but she should never be left out :D

My beautiful baby boy was 9lb3oz (and I am only tiny!) Talk about painful! :( When they tried to vacuum suction him out, because he wasn't budging, the hose broke and the obstetrician went flying across the room. Not funny at the time but definately funny looking back on it. :D I ended up with 25 stitches! I guess it serves me right for marrying someone so big! I think I might try a caesarean next time. What do you think? I'm due again in Sept 2006.

I am due in seven weeks and starting to get worried about the size, I asked my mum what size me and my siblings were... I was 4kg (8lbs 8oz) with a 37cm head (that's the part I'm worried about!) and 56cm long... my younger brother was 4.5kg and 60.7 cm long!! (also 37cm head)... my sister had the smallest head with 35cm (she was also 56cm long)... we were tall babies... my DH is 6'3'' and I am 5'11 so I don't think our little one is going to be short!
Originally they thought Shelby was going to be huge, then a 35 week ultra told us otherwise. Eventually when he popped out 9 days early he was 6 lb 4 and 50 cm

Lucas was 1 week early and weighed - 8lb 9oz.

Mine was 4lb 15oz. She was born at 39 weeks, but I had pre-eclampsia, so she wasn't getting much bigger in the last few weeks.

My babies all pretty much followed the "larger each baby trend" except Jake, who was the second of 5 but the biggest at 9lb3oz. Venus was the first at 7lb3oz, Skye-Ann was 3rd at 8lb5oz, Luke was 8lb8oz and Shine was 8lb11oz. I honestly believe that the weight of the baby doesn't make that much difference - it's all in the head circ! Luke's head was 37.5cms:eek: and was the most painful birth whereas Shine's head was teeny at 33cms and was very easy to give birth to.
I honestly believe that the weight of the baby doesn't make that much difference - it's all in the head circ!
i used to say that too.. before i gave birth to a 9lb 8 bubba
yes the head circ is pretty darn important! hehe but i noticed a big difference! the weight of bub trying to push through :banghead:
i had a fantastic delivery, easy, but ouch. i think the weight of her pushing down on everything on the way out really was noticable.
my other babies were big too, (8lb 12 & 8lb 9) but i definately seen a difference.
i was still pretty sore for a while, the weight of a big bubba certainly takes its toll, and i reckon takes so much longer for everything to heal up.

My "little" boy was born weighing a healthy 4.67kgs.. 10lb 5oz!!! He was my first and born by emergency c/s after 15 hours of labour.. he did not engage fully as he was too big to fit through my bone structure!!!
Expecting #2 in September and hoping that this one isn't so big and I can have a successful VBAC.

Weight: 3.94kg or 8 pound 11 ounces
Length: 53cm

Technically I was induced (they were worried about his size) but they just broke my waters and then everything else happened on its own. Vaginal delivery, no drugs (not even gas:eek: ) and only a superficial tear (no stitches). This body was made for babies! Shame I'm only having the one:laughing:
