I have been thinking alot about how we are slowly killing our planet, and it scares me what we are leaving our future generations with  , so I have come up with an idea for all of us bubhub parents!! For one week (starting Sunday) we could have a 'save the planet week' where each of us does what we can for the planet! I will start by stating my goals for the week! I think that one week is a good start to aim for - and doesn't it take 6 days or something to form a habbit!!
I will switch to cloth nappies for one week
Did you know the average baby uses approx 6000 nappies until they are toilet trained (845kilos!). 800 million nappies a year are sent to landfill in a Australia alone. It takes about 500 years for these to break down! So if you think about it a few hundred years from now your childs pooey nappy could be dug back up - ewwww :barf: !!! http://www.myplanet.com.au/
I will use greencycle bags for one week
6.4billion bags are sent to landfill each year - these take 100 of years to break down!
I will turn off the computer, tv, steros, vcr etc at the power point instead of letting them go to standby for one week.
Appliances left on standby account for 12 percent of electricity used - if you were to switch off at the power point you would save approx 100 per year!
I will switch off lights when I leave a room for one week
I will walk or take public transport where possible for one week.
cars produce 46 billion tones of greenhouse pollution per year!
I will sought through rubbish and recycle for one week
I will go through draws, cupboards and give clothes that no longer fit away to charity for one week!
So who is with me and what are you going to do??? :smiliedance:

I already do most of those every week! Gonna have to come up with some more ideas.
Switching to cloth nappies isn't really practical for just a week. By the time you've bought everything and figured out the routine for them, might as well stick with cloth long term.

Lol, yeah Im gonna try stick to cloth, but instead of waiting till I can afford to buy the fitted Im just gonna dig out my old terry towelling ones, we'll see how I go! I am a very naughty person I have never recycled, the only thing I really do is cut down on water wastage and walk when I can, I just wanted to do more... Everything I do for the week I am going to try to stick with long term, its just easier to aim for that one week until it forms a habbit IYKWIM?!

Yep, I know what you mean.
I will phone the real estate agent and arrange to finally get the leaking bathroom faucets fixed :)
[QUOTE]I will switch to cloth nappies for one week
Already use cloth nappies full time!
I will use greencycle bags for one week
Use green bags normally!
I will turn off the computer, tv, steros, vcr etc at the power point instead of letting them go to standby for one week.
You got me on that one! I will turn the TV off when not in use then!
I will switch off lights when I leave a room for one week
Already do!
I will walk or take public transport where possible for one week.
Considering I do not have a licence this is the norm for me!
I will sought through rubbish and recycle for one week
I do already!
I will go through draws, cupboards and give clothes that no longer fit away to charity for one week!
I did that 2 weeks ago!

I receive what AGL calls green energy. It costs a tiny bit more, but it's worth it. My power supply is sourced from alternative environmentaly friendly sources. I say NO to greenhouse gas emissions!!

I switched to clotha while ago & am loving it :smiliedance: Ok so her nappy bag is heavier but i feel better
I shop at Aldi & use boxes for shopping. Plastic bags are handy for kittly litter though
If you turn electrial appliances off at the wall dont you need to re-program them? Too much work, sorry.
I will switch off lights when I leave a room for one week - that i will do
We have just let my car run out of rego so only have one now. So that helps
I went through my draws on the weekend.
I always recycle, no choice. Our bin is half regular, half recycling.
I wont vacuum as much, it'll save on power

I will switch to cloth nappies for one week
I am sorry but no way! Been there and done that...
I will use greencycle bags for one week
I use green bags all the time already...
I will turn off the computer, tv, steros, vcr etc at the power point instead of letting them go to standby for one week.
I always turn ours off when we are not using them - not standby but at the off button (not the powerpoint), except the PC because for the amount of times it gets used everyday it would use more power turning it on and off all day long!! it gets turned off before I go to bed.
I will switch off lights when I leave a room for one week
I try to avoid turning them on at all!! Natural light is so much nicer:thumbsup: Thinking about it, the 2 lights in our house that get used the most are in the bathroom and in the kitchen, some others don't even get turned on at all
I will walk or take public transport where possible for one week. I have very rarely driven anywhere since I took maternity leave, except to do groceries because I can't lug all those bags home
I will sought through rubbish and recycle for one week
Yep - we do that!!
I will go through draws, cupboards and give clothes that no longer fit away to charity for one week!
I do that twice a year (summer and winter) to make room for NEW clothes - double edged sword that one!!
Nw I am thinking what can I do for bubhub environment week? Any suggestions?
I wont vacuum as much, it'll save on power
Oooh that one sounds like a good one! I might just do that!:D

What about switching to bio-degradable (is that the right word??) detergents???
cloth nappies are the go!
use green bags all the time, and not just grocery, but all shopping
DP is manic about turning off lights
we recycle everything we can all the time, i wish they picked up our recycling every week and rubbish every 2
compost all the food scraps
use enviro friendly cleaners
save water from baths to put on the garden
shop at food co-ops and refill things like oil and sauces, and buy bulk rice pasta and bring your own bags, containers
eat ORGANIC - don't support the companies that are damaging our environment
and an even better idea is to do this stuff (and all the other ideas people have writte) everyday. why stop at one week and then go back to our wasteful habits. make them life habits. it's really not that hard, just takes a bit of change.

Already do most of those things too, but I just want to say "Good on you"Harmony for taking the initiative to set these goals for yourself. It only takes one person to do this and many will follow.
To follow on from Faery, don't shop in Big name department stores. Buy clothes from the small business owner/markets/op shops. And have a 'Buy Nothing' day. I used to hear about this day on JJJ but haven't heard of it in a while.:)
Ok, I'll try to do something. Here's my "I'm So Good" list
Our house is on solar power, necessity not choice- govt doesn't supply power poles out here!
We already conserve every drop of water as what we've got in our rain water tank and house dam is all we've got- no magic source somewhere!
We recycle all our aluminum cans and beer bottles as we get paid 5c each in SA-technically we get paid in NSW as we take them to Broken Hill!
I try to get as many businesses and organisations to send me as much stuff as they can via email rather than on paper through Aust Post as our mail service is very slow and only comes out twice a week.
I use shopping green bags or boxes from the supermarket if I forget them as I do such a huge shop it'd never fit in my car in bags!
I never vacuum til I really have to, ie mil's coming!
