View Full Version : Could it be cow's milk intolerance? A bit TMI.
My 16 month old son had over the past few weeks often diarrhoea and vomiting.
Afer it happened the first time, about 2 weeks ago, we cut out his milk in the evening, to see if that makes any difference.
It got better, so we decided to give it another try on milk. 2 nights ago, he had a massive diarrhoea, about 1 hour after he got his milk in the morning (the evening one was fine).
Last night he was fine but this morning, he did 2 diarrhoea poos within a short amount of time.
And just before, he did a massive :barf:in his cot.
He doesn't show any other signs, like rashes or eczma.
It also just came up recently, he was on formula almost from birth, about 2 weeks after he was born and didn't had a problem with that. And for about 3 months now, he's on cows milk and he never had any symptoms until now.
Is it possible that he could be allergic to cows milk? Would that show up so late?
Or does he maybe just have a bug, that causes the diarrhoea and vomiting?
What should I do? Cut out all diary products? Or just try a different milk, see if that makes a difference?
Any ideas, suggestion, help would be appreciated. Thx

I'd try a different milk for now, but if he's only just being sick now i don't think it would be intolerance? Sorry, wish i could be more helpful. I am lactose intolerant but didn't show the diarrohea symptoms until i was 30 years old so who knows how long it can take to show up :detective: Good luck.
Thanks for that. I was also thinking, that it may should have showed up earlier but who knows?
I'll go to the servo tomorrow and see what kind of milk they have. Maybe soy milk or something?
If it continues, I may have to take him to the doc and discuss the whole stuff with him.
Noone in our family or my DH's family, is allergic or intolerant against cow milk or diary products.
I know I probably sound like a broken record because i say this quite a bit, but I believe that most human children are a bit intolerant to cows milk for the first few years of their life and I wouldn't give straight cows milk to any child until after they are 2. Some kids show supposedly no symptoms, but sometimes there are things that show up but are not necessarily connected to the intolerance.
It sounds like it has built up in his system to the point where he overloaded. I dunno though, I am not a doctor obviously. He might just have a bug or be reacting to something else.
Unfortunately most doctors don't really know much about this either so you might have to look into further and decide for yourself. The Dairy Board has us all convinced of the benefits of cows milk, but for a lot of people, its really not the health food drink that they make it out to be.
My 20 month old has cheese and little tastes of dairy products but he has never had a drink of straight cows milk in his life and he won't be for a while yet.
Formula isn't as hard to digest as cows milk even though its made from cows milk, its a lot easier to handle.
Good luck, you poor thing, its not nice seeing your little ones in distress :hugs:
the good news is that he will probably grow out of it.

More than likely its an overload of dairy this is quite common.
This sounds like Boof in many ways.
But yep it could also be a tummy bug.
Take him off all dairy & even watch what foods you are giving him because most things often have dairy.
Give it a good 10days cause it takes that long to clear from the system. This will also give it a good amount of time if it is a tummy bug. Then trial something say a cup of milk then wait a few days & see what happens then if all is ok try to introduce things slowly. If he is overloading you just need to work out how much he can handle if anything & then go from there.
Thanks Shed and Ally, really appreciate the answers.
I never heard of an overload of diary but from what you're saying, it makes sense.
He only has milk in the morning and evenings. 1 sippy cup, around 300 ml and he hardly finishes that.
He used to eat yoghurt alot, when he was around 6 mth old but the last few weeks, he plainly refused it, even the baby ones.
Will cut the dairy out and see if that makes a difference. It's gonna be difficult but that's the only way to find out.
And I don't wanna see him anymore like that. Covered in his own vomit :(

Good luck Coffee, let us know how you go :fingerscrossed: My DS does get bad diarrohea when he overloads on dairy so i am worried he may be lactose intolerant like me later? But Mum says babies just have more sensitive tummies while their immune systems are still building so it's normal, but i agree with you, it's terrible to see them like that :( All the best :hugs:
PS - I put DS onto Soy milk for a while, i found the best one (he and i like anyway) is the So Good Regular in the long life carton. So Good doesn't have that over-processed taste :barf:. I also think Smooth White isn't too bad. I think Vitasoy and So Natural have the grossest flavour, mind you most coffee shops stock these brands so i guess it all comes down to personal taste!
He's been off it yesterday but when he woke up this morning, he was completely soaked in diarrohea. It went literally all through his nappy (sposie) and PJs.
And about 20 min. after I cleaned him up, he did another one. :(
Thanks for the tips regarding the milk. I'll try it out once his diarrohea has stopped which hopefully won't take much longer.
