I am just here to voice my opinion and ask you thoughts on this subject.
Last week my doctor sent a referral by fax to Westmead Ante Natal clinic to book me in i was 7 weeks three days i live in Blacktown so it is not my local hospital but lived in the parramatta area for the birth of my first child and in exactly this house for my second both born at Westmead with fantastic care. Much to my surprise today i received a letter from the ante natal clinic at Westmead telling me they have no room for me and my baby in the month of october why? you ask because i live out of area i am furious i think i should be able to chose that hospital as it holds all the records of my previous births am i over reacting or should i ask them to reconsider.:hissy::hair::thumbsdown:

Public hospitals are bursting at the seams so I guess they just like to try and relieve some of that by saying there are conditions on which you can use a certain hospital, in particular when it's a good hospital and everyone may want to go there for that kind of care. We only have one hospital here that's public, and a population of around 130,000 people (someone correct me if I'm going go old figures lol) so there is no option here and it's only by chance if you get a bed or not. I know one lady had to be in a different ward with her newborn and not in the maternity ward due to lack of beds, and I know of one lady who was asked to leave after just 12 hours because it was her 3rd child, she had no complications with any of her babies, and they had a shortage of beds. It's not nice but I guess they have their reasons and have to follow guidelines.

yeh i tend to agree that livo is a hole lol.
trying to get into sutherland this time round.
i'd try again adn explain to them why you feel comfortable going to that hospitl, if they reject you again then give another hospiital a go.
you can try a few different places adn see what you like and feels best for you iykwim?

I had DD1 at Westmead in 06 and we lived on the other side of Blacktown, but I know that not long after we booked in they did get over run with "patients" and have been flat out since. Once of the Mums who was in our antenatal class fell pregnant again quickly and she couldn't get in to Westmead again and had to go to Blacktown. She lives in Parramatta...

Me, I was treated badly at Westmead, but that's my experience, I haven't really heard anyone else say that they had a bad time there - one of my school friends is a middie there now (wasn't when I was there).

We went to Blacktown for DD2 3 months ago and we now live in Baulkham Hills (did it all back to front LOL) and it was great, we didn't wait around for hours on end (maybe twice) and when they found out I was going for VBAC once I turned up to have her, I didn't have any dramas with my "trial of labour" the midwife was barely there (the way I liked it) and the student midwife from the UK was fantastic!! After being told I couldn't birth a baby because my pelvis was too small, I pushed her out in 10mins once i was 10cms and the midwives made it so easy, I only had gas for the last half hour!!

They really do promote happy, healthy mum and bub whereas I found Westmead didn't really care about Mum (noticable on the wards but moreso in SCN).

Seriously, Blacktown is a great hospital, I was weary about it because it is a teaching hospital, but the student we had was fabulous!! Better than the midwife!!

I'm rambling now. But Westmead is really busy especially since the new area has been finished, it doesn't have as many beds as it used to and people want to go there now because all the rooms are singular now, no sharing...

The birthing room at Blacktown I found more homey (not sure about the new ones at Westmead though) I had more room and if you need monitoring they have portable CTG's that are waterproof so you can still have a bath/shower and keep an eye on bubs' heartbeat...

If I have another I don't care where I live, I'll be going for Blacktown again, even if I have to move in with Mum just to do it...

I can understand your frustration and can empathise with wanting to stay where you have had a previous good experience. I had my DD at westmead and for that reason chose to go to blacktown for my DS. Blacktown offer the services of a birth centre which is what we went through and it was nothing short of amazing. My husband and I rave on about it all the time to anyone who will listen.

Westmead is always very busy-every section-so if they dont end up accepting your referral I would give Blacktown a go!

I hope you get it all sorted out!

Id ask them to reconsider and explain u have always gone there for all your pregnancys and that should be taken into consideration.
Call them and ask to speak to who is in charge of the ante natal ward and just keep at them, dont take no for an answer so easily.
Sometimes talking to them in person can be even better especially if you are extra nice about it too.

Goodluck hope they change their minds for you:fingerscrossed:

good luck..they told me that they wouldn't take me if i didn't live in the area (but i do) because they are so booked. I think its BS because if it were an emergency they would have to take you! besides, when i was there a few weeks ago i saw lots of beds and rooms empty in the maternity ward

I had my last bub at westmead only because she had to be transferred immediately to childrens.

The staff were incredibly busy on the post natal ward and the only time I attended a midwives clinic, it was so incredibly busy that I was at the hospital from 8:30am until nearly 3pm!

I had no choice so had to go there ... I would have rathered have my bub at our little local hospy.

I have heard nothing but praise for Blacktown ... I would def look at it at least.
