DS is nearing 10 mths and is standing in his cot instead of going to sleep. The problem is he can't get down from the standing position. As soon as I put him to bed I can see his mind ticking over about how he is going to pull himself up. He stands up and chats and chats and chats. In fact he is standing up in there now and chatting away.

Any advice on encouraging him to stay lying down??

I remember this well!!

We spent a lot of time showing DS to bend his knees while we were playing. So every time he stood against the couch etc, we waited until he started to get frustrated and then gently bend his legs so that he could see how to do it. I'm not sure how long it took - but I don't think it was too long.

He must be so proud of himself standing up in the cot - so cute! :)

Yep we found showing boof how to get down was the best thing but otherwise we would keep going in & laying him down so he would get the idea it was sleep time.
Try not to stress too much they just think they are top stuff for being able to do these things so its a novelty !
At least the mornings are great ! Walking in & having them standing up waiting for you with a big grin makes the mornings soooo much easier :D

Laying baby down in the cot is the way to go. This is actually a way of teaching your baby to self settle. The idea is to stay in the room with baby and lie them back down everytime they stand up, this is giving them the message - time for a sleep!
I did this with my D. I worked at it for about 1 week. It's not easy but it paid off.
Now she only stand up a couple of times and then gives up and happily plays in her cot (either sitting or laying) for bout 10 mins and puts herself to sleep. She rarely cries now which is a relief.
I found Tizzy Halls methods to be a sanity saver.:hugs:
