Well, his due date had come and gone, and I had canceled a precious induction because I knew instinctively that he would come when he was good and ready.
However, hospital policy meant that I would have to be induced on Saturday night/Sunday morning, at 42 weeks (something I was dreading).
Friday at about midday, I started having what felt like period pain in my lower back and abdomen, and some moderate bleeding, it got worse and at about 10pm I rang my midwife Jo, but due to it being her day off, I got Kerry who was one of the other lovely midwifes who asked me to come in to the hospital in case the bleeding was anything serious.
My husband and best friend came to the hospital by which time I had been contracting for 8 hours or so. They put me on the monitor and did a quick check, the baby and I were fine so we went home.
I tried to sleep but my contractions were about 6 mins apart and getting quite painful, so at about 4am, I woke my birth partner and my husband. At this stage I felt an urge to take of all my clothes, so I stripped off and got on my birth ball, holding my husband and breathing through the contractions.
By 5:30 my contractions were 3 every 10 mins and getting fairly strong, I called Kerry who told us to come in. Contractions in the car were awful, I wanted to take my clothes back off and get on my birth ball!
We went to the hospital and went straight to the birth suite where I was asked if I wanted an internal to see how far I had dilated, I agreed and my cervix had completely thinned and dilated to 4 cm. However my baby was posterior.
(Jo my midwife came in and took over at about 8am) I alternated between the shower and the birth ball leaning against the bed but by 10am the contractions were on top of each other and I asked for some gas as the pain was getting a bit too much (it had been 20 hours) The gas was excellent, it really helped me to focus my breathing and took the edge off the pain. My birth partner was massaging my back and my husband was cuddling me and holding the shower on my back. Then I got up on my knees leaning over the bed, rocking my hips.
At about 12:20 I wanted to push!! The baby was starting to turn around and he dropped right down into my birth canal (this part was very painful and I was screaming for an epidural/cesarean/just yank him out/anything)
Jo was very encouraging and told me that it was ok, I was almost there... I had to push, Jo asked me to breathe through one and I couldnt, I was grunting and pushing and the urge was overwhelming, I just went with it and pushed as hard as I could. I was lying on the bed on my side with my leg up cause I was too exhausted to sit or stand anymore. When I felt him crowning, the burning sensation, I was somewhat relieved cause I knew my son would be in the world very very soon, I gave a few good hard pushes and his head was out, and one more push and much to everyones surprise the rest of him just popped out in one go, he landed on the bed and I instantly felt incredible, my husband picked him up and gave him to me and I was so amazed to meet my little man. He lifted his head to look at me! I looked at my husband and asked what his name was going to be "Oliver James" was what he decided. We cuddled for about 30 mins and had a little feed with the lights dimmed and some soft music on.
My husband took his shirt off and had some skin to skin while I birthed the placenta and was being stitched up, I had one small internal tear and a little bit of grazing, so three stitches and I was up and about, having a shower and feeling great.
My birth experience was painful, beautiful and empowering.
Oliver James was welcomed into the world at 12:50pm on 15/03/08 at 9lbs 7oz (4.2kg)
My world will be a better place for having him in it.:cloud9:
