Hi everyone and BubHub,

Does anyone have any magical remedies for really bad teething/nappy rash. Grace has got the soreist bottom and it doesn't matter what I put on it or how long she is nappy free, I can't get rid of the rash.

I have tried; zinc and castor oil cream, cod liver oil and zinc cream, miconazole and hydrocortisone and canestan and hydrocortisone (last two recommended by pharmsist and day care carer). I have put the fungal creams on left them to dry in and then covered the area with a barrier cream and as I previously mentioned I have let her go nappy free (with lots of mess  )

Does anyone know anything about raw egg white?? or is that a old wifes tale??

I would really appreciate lots of input

Hi Gemma

I use paw paw ointment available over the counter at the chemist. I find it works really well on nappy rash and provides a good barrier as well. I have used it on all three of my children and think it is best stuff for nappy rash. You can also use it for winter face rashes, sunburn etc. The best thing it is non toxic.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Just a thought, my friends recently found their little one is allergic to baby wipes! They are now using warm water with a soft cloth, check your soap powders too. It didn't matter what they used cream wise it was only when they stopped using the wipes and just used water that it cleared up.

Hi all

I too use Paw Paw ointment - although Lachlan hasn't had any bad nappy rash yet - but I've used it for other things and find it really good :) very good barrier cream.....even been told some women use it for cracked nipples ;)

Hi Gemma
I've also used the paw paw ointment on both my girls and that usually works pretty well. If the rash is persistent, then I'll swap to another cream (zinc-based, I think) so don't throw them away just yet! ;) . I also have resorted to washing with just water when the rash is very bad and then going back to wipes when it clears up. I also remember being surprised when someone told me that you really should dry the little bum thoroughly BEFORE applying the creams (although I probably should have been able to work that out myself :o ). Hope it clears up soon.

Cheers

thanks everyone,

the canesten and hydrocortisone cream and codliver and zinc creams used in tandem seems to be working! We shall see if it continues to clear her botbot of rash and I will let you all know when she is rash free.

Thanks again

You HAVE to establish the cause first and foremost - are you certain it is teething related? Is it always made much worse by a poo? If so then you're definitely right, but if that's not the obvious cause then there are lots of other potential causes:

In disposables:
the nappies themselves
wipes

In cloth:
pollen from line drying
nappies needing treating for thrush if is a fungal infection
detergent allergy
fabric softener  NEVER use it on cloth

Others:
food changes/intolerances
antibiotics

Barrier creams can be useful if poo is definitely doing the damage. But something that cures amazingly well and can be used all of the time is a chamomile tea compress.

You need some kind of old cloth/face washer/half a bunny rug that can be folded and placed inside a nappy of any kind.

Brew one cup of chamomile tea for 5 mins (from a regular chamomile tea bag, though chamomile tea and honey tea bags are even better). Cool it in the fridge and either use alone or add 4-5 drops of tea tree oil. Soak the cloth in it and gently squeeze it out (don't wring). Place it inside the nappy next to the skin, as if it were a sanitary pad.

Chamomile and honey are both INCREDIBLY healing and very soothing too, not to mention totally natural! Tea tree oil is anti fungal and antiseptic so it will kill any nasties and no, it doesn't sting.

A chamomile tea compress works a treat and means you don't have to resort to messy nappy-free times!

Hi All,
I have found the simple Vasolene is a good barrier cream. It can also be used on a rash, and let the skin heal (fairly) naturally. Better than using too many chemicals.

Thanks everyone.

It definatly started as a teething related rash, as she gets these yellow v.soft acidic poos that burn her skin with every tooth that comes up. Usually this is easily treated with barrier creams, but not that time. Talked with the pharmisist and because it was also raised and lumpy (never been like that before), and he suggested a fungal cream and hydorcortisone to reduce the swelling and redness with a barrier cream on top. The one he gave me worked only a small amount. Graces daycare carer suggested canesten and hyrodcortisone and barrier cream which worked like a charm. mind you it still took 10-12 days to clear completly!!

Also, i just wanted to add the barrier cream I used was a mixture of zinc ream and cod liver oil...a lot thicker than regular barrier creams so they don't come off!! And the cod liver oil has vitamin A in it to assist healing. There is only one product on the market Covitol, which is really difficult to come by, so I made my own be getting plain zinc cream and a bottle of cod liver oil from the pharmacy, and mixed them together.

Thanks all or your ideas and suggestions. Graces bottom also gives thanks :D

my daughter suffers from nappy rash a lot i've seen that many doctors about it i have tried every thing. the best thing i have tried is curash cream wipes and powder. also when she doesn't have it a few drops of lavender in water is good and keeps her bottom smelling good.

all you do is get a spray bottle fill it with water and add a few drops of lavender then after you wipe their bottoms spray it on let it dry and put the nappy back on

Hope :) :)

Hi
I have never used any products at all on my children (due to the chemical/alcohol content) - not even baby wipes/ talc / baby bath and neither one has ever had nappy rash. I think we use alot of unnecessary products because we think we have to.

Something to consider

Calendula cream is really lovely, antiinflammitory, anti bacterial and very gentle. Get it from health food shops. Anything with too many ingredients (unnecesary) or too much packaging will probably be crap. (big companies love to take a great idea, corrupt it, raise the price and halve the good ingredients). I used to make my own. It's not too hard. If I find the recipe I'll post it.

Cheers.

Hi Gemma,

Have you tried Bepanthen cream?

I have changed countless bottoms over the years and it works a treat.

Though if you have found your cure, stick to it.

If the problem is fungal and the creams aren't helping, plain yogurt is wonderful.
It takes the heat out immeadiately and the bugs in it go to work on the rash.

Three servings will usually settle the worst cases. I once made my husband drive around to find some natural yogurt at 2am. He returned triumphantly, he also returned with chocolate YOGO's (with the natural yogurt). He said he needed something to calm him down too!

Be careful with any essential oils, always water them down for babies, and NEVER use it straight. Almond oil is a terrific base to blend them with, unless the baby is allergic to nuts.
Seriously, I have had it happen!

Once the rash settles, to 'toughen up' your baby's skin, bath time turns into massage time and get that oil into her skin.

Two drops of lavender and 30ml's of Almond oil will provide a lovely massage oil.
The bonus of lavender is it's antiseptic and bacterial qualities.

Chammomile also works well. Personally I don't like Tea tree, but you may, again only a few drops in a base.

For the actual teething, try rubbing a mix of Almond and Chammomile to bub's jaw line. With your thumb and pointer finger, start at the chin and rub down the jaw line and down the neck to the collar bone.

This helps drain away the pain and fluids.

If things are really bad, instead of dosing up on Panadol, use just a drop on the gums, about a quarter (maximum) of the reccommended dose. It acts as a local aneasetic (excuse my spelling), which means you can apply this every hour, rather than mucking up sleep patterns with a full dose.

i hope it has passed by now, and my thoughts are with you. It breaks my heart when I hear a baby in pain and there is little you can do.

I bet she's getting some great cuddles and I hope that someone has some there for you too!

Best Wishes

Marina

hello there,
My daughter was lactose intolerant and before we knew this I thought she was teething but the rash just wouldn't go away. I like you tried everything and she even had blistering bleeding wheeping little bumps. I took her to the doctor time and time again. It was friend who had expierenced the same problem that suggested the lactose intolerance.
I suggested it to my doctor and in the mean time changed her formula to lactose free. The rash started to clear up within 48 hours. She was diagnosed and then put on a prescription lactose free.
This is only a suggestion and trial and error are the best mothods.
The only other cream I have used for almost everything is the very old Rawleighs ointment. Works a treat on everything from cuts to nappy rash.
I use the Rawleighs antiseptis salve.

i found that the paw paw cream (avail from chemists/ health food shops) worked. I also recommend a cream called chalmoderm ( or something like that) it has chamomile in it , stinks but the difference can b seen in one nappy change. also calendula cream is very healing ( sunspirit make it) and is what we use whenever bubs bum is red (rarely). hope this helps :)

Well, my little man never had nappy rash, however he did have a VERY BAD case of Eczema, and my local chemist gave me a hint that worked for her own daughter, of buying EVENING PRIMROSE OIL + FISH OIL, (its the normal Blackmores Brand). And put 2 capsules in the bath, keep going for about a month and if git dissapears stop, but if still there a bit, do it a bit longer. I did it, and his skin is perfect, and has been for nearly a year. Considering we battled for 6 months, saw skin specialists, used all the strong creams but found a simple think like this worked.

From what i know this can help with other skin irritations, my only advise is put the fan on, cause it STINKS! but it worked miricales for me. As my little mans skin was so so bad with red raw eczema.

Good luck let me know how you go.

Hi Gemma

My two year old suffers the most dreadful nappy rash. I tried absolutely everything - canesten, zinc and castor oil, curash ... and then I came across Desitin (zinc oxide base). It's about $8 for a large tube and works so fast its amazing. Even the carers at his daycare centre extol the virtues of the stuff and have been happily telling all the other mums about it.

Honestly Gemma - my son suffered dreadfully with a red, sore, weeping bottom and it had nothing to do with how many times I changed him. Desitin fixes most of the rashes in between nappy changes and protects the bottom for the next round.

Good luck, cheers

Hi all,
I have read thru most of the posts here and didn't see anyone mention CORN FLOUR! Yep, you read me right! Your standard run of the mill (no pun intended) corn flour any brand will do. You use it just like a baby powder every nappy change and you will begin to see a difference almost immediately. One mum mentioned that she didn't use commercial anything with her kids and they never got nappy rash - I think that there is something to that on the basis that it is often the most simple things that are the most effective. One other mum mentioned BiCarb in the bath, this is another good thing but only works on them while they are in the bath. For my money, you can't go past the corn flour for the rash and that Paw Paw Ointment as a barrier once it's cured. For what it's worth. :)
