(Just wanted to post this here, as it pertains to same sex parents.)
(It could probably also go into the current affairs section, so mods please move if appropriate )

I just heard on the news today that the ACT is probably going to legalise civil unions for same-sex couples :yelclap: I'm in SA but I applaud the ACT for being so logical. Hopefully the Let's Get Equal campaign in SA gets the same ball rolling here very soon.

But then, after being all happy about it for a few seconds, silly newsreader lady informs me that Philip Ruddock (:devil6:) wants to block this new law!! (He's the attorney general, yeah? Someone correct me if I'm wrong) I DO NOT UNDERSTAND why he seems to think that civil unions are somehow less than marriages!! I would think that the fact our divorce rate is nearing 50% is more of a worry, than the fact that some people who love each other want to publicly commit their lives to each other.

:banghead: Has ANYONE in our current government heard of the separation of church and state???!!!???

My sister married a twice-divorced man, they had a celebrant, no mention of God, and the service took place in my Aunty's lounge room. If marriage is supposed to be sacred and completely church-related, then surely my sister's marriage is not up to par!!??!! (Am I making sense? I tend not to when I'm this riled up)

Thoughts? Comments?

I am also with you Queen, and your post made perfect sense. I hope that same-sex marriages go ahead, I know plenty who have civil ceremonies anyway, but unfortunately at the moment, they hold no weight with the law. It disgusts me that gay couples can't get married when and if they chose to. It's appalling in this day and age.

Hopefully the government will get some sense about it soon (not likely to happen though, given the way governments operate!).

I am probably going to cop some flak for this but....

I have no issue with same sex civil ceremonies being legalised and applaud any government that allows it.

However I don't think that same sex marriages should be allowed, I just think that marriage should be something for a man and woman to experience. I believe that this is how it is meant to be.

I am in no way religious but am somewhat of a traditionalist I guess. I have no issue with homosexuality whatsoever, I just think some things should be left alone and for 'traditional' couples only...Sorry if that offends but it is my opinion.

I think it is pretty hard to find someone you love enough to marry, if you are lucky enough to find someone and they happen to be the same sex - good luck to you!!!!

Ruddock makes me :barf:
