Actually thinking of it, it all started from me trying to hide my HUGE eyes so going side on achieved that for me... OP your not alone. I know some of my (male) friends have huge issues about this, and also the level of importance placed on myspaace/facebook profile pics. The suspected airbrushing, the flattering black and white... its all a bit suss isnt it?

I guess when I was younger it was the whole look sweet and innocent and now it's finding the most flattering angle!
