View Full Version : no offence to any young chicks on the forum .. but
I have to ask .. seriously .. (and this isn't just from the avatars I've seen .. but also zoints profiles.. and other internet places) ..
what is the deal .. with CONSTANTLY tilting your head in all photos?? i know that Paris Hilton is a big fan of it .. as is Nicole Richie ..
I think I'm old .. when I see it in avatars etc I actually sit up straighter.. and get the urge to stretch my neck  .. I also get the urge to refer people to physios ... sigh ..see .. just the fact that I KNOW how to contact a decent physio .. makes me old
so come on .. young 'uns .. tell me .. why the crooked neck???

(Well obviously this is aimed at me.:p)
Force of habit.:)
Actually thinking of it, it all started from me trying to hide my HUGE eyes so going side on achieved that for me... Plus my best friend has a thing for only showing one side of her face she calls it her 'good side' so I have gotten used to using the above so we weren't facing opposite sides in photos... she is a freak.

:laughing::laughing: just realised my av pic is tilted BUT I'm not a young chick! My head angle is because I am lying on the floor and trying to keep the camera away from DS who is trying to grab it.

maybe 'cos the younger mums are lucky enough not to have to worry about double chins and sagging necks! LOL ... that's why I tend to stretch my head up rather straight in photos!
sigh .. so it IS for sexy looks .. ok .. (see for me .. just getting into something that isn't FLANNEL .. is sexy )
well .. I'm still thinking that in 20 odd years .. physios are going to be treating a condition called 'myspaceneck' .. and making a FORTUNE off all these young'uns who cant walk straight (they just go round and round in circles .. which ever way they are tilted :p)
I'll just sit here and mutter under my breath  ... old lady style .

HAH! That reminds me of when I was 12 and the fashion was childrens licensed character singlets and backpacks with denim shorts and rainbow socks one I lived in them, one day my sister said to me what are you wearing and I said 'Gosh Han I am being an Individual!' whilst rolling my eyes her reply was 'Right so if your being individual why do you all look the same?' glancing over at all my friends in the same outfit.

Having the camera higher than you are makes you looks less fat...
I don't tilt my head though in photos really... I just look for a specific flattering angle...
Myspace came after I finished high school, and emo didn't really exist back then either... and people didn't really take photos of themself either... you got someone to hold the camera for you.
I think I JUST missed the whole myspace photo thing...:p

Okay, Okay so I tilt my head :p Hmm but why do I do it? Obviously because I have a big nose and when I turn to the side it kinda makes it look smaller, also I have a fat face front on so if its tilted it takes the double chin off!
Wait wait... I'll find a pic..... :detective:

tilting is for amatures.
it's all about looking over your shoulder and slightly angling body in suprised manner of one that is shyly impressed that another might be calling your name on the red carpet.
that ladies is the youngan look.
i am told this thins the body and frames face by snuggling into shoulder.
the pros are the full body contortionists. :D

I found this on head tilting. It seems it's not just the "young ones" that only do it. I would paste url but don't want to cause an infringement.
HEAD-TILT-SIDE
"Picture of woman tilting her head"
See how she leans her cheek upon her hand! --Shakespeare, Macbeth, II, 2
Gesture (http://members.aol.com/nonverbal2/gesture.htm). Leaning the head over laterally, toward the right or left shoulder (http://members.aol.com/nonverbal2/shoulder.htm).
Usage: Head-tilt-side may be used a. to show friendliness and foster rapport (http://members.aol.com/nonverbal3/rapport1.htm); b. to show coyness, as in courtship (http://members.aol.com/doder1/court1.htm); c. to strike a submissive (http://members.aol.com/nonverbal2/submit.htm) pose (e.g., to show deference to one's boss); and d. to respond to cute signs (i.e., to immature cues emanating, e.g., from kittens, puppies, and babies).
Anatomy. Head-tilt-side involves a. the scalene muscles, which connect the neck bones (cervical vertebrae) to the upper two ribs, as well as b. the trapezius, and c. the sternocleidomastoid muscles. Controlled by "gut reactive," special visceral nerves (http://members.aol.com/doder1/viscera1.htm) (see also PHARYNGEAL ARCH (http://members.aol.com/nonverbal2/pharynx.htm)), the latter two muscles are well equipped to express emotions (http://members.aol.com/nonverbal2/emotion.htm), feelings, and moods.
Culture. In Spain, tilting the head sideways and resting the cheek in the palm of the hand is a deliberate signal which says, "Sissy!" (Morris 1994:21).
Media (http://members.aol.com/nonverbal3/media.htm). Head-tilting was a signature cue of method actor, James Dean. Dean's head-tilts seemed to say, as East of Eden director, Elia Kazan put it, "Pity me, I'm too sensitive for the world" (Dalton 1984:60).
Origin. Head-tilt-side is one of several self-protective gestures stemming from the larger shoulder-shrug display (http://members.aol.com/nonverbal3/shrugdis.htm) (see also CROUCH (http://members.aol.com/doder1/crouch1.htm)).
RESEARCH REPORTS: 1. Head-tilt-side is used extensively by men and women as a flirting or courtship cue (Eibl-Eibesfeldt 1970; Givens 1978, 1983). 2. Sideward head-tilts have been decoded as signals of shyness in young children (McGrew 1972), and in adults (Givens 1978). 3. "Females tilted their head [sic] to one side significantly more than males: 18 out of 20 times recorded. The head-tilt seemed to be more obvious in male-female greetings" (Kendon and Ferber 1973:152). 4. "This head [tilt] gesture may convey an attitude of coyness or submissiveness, but it is so common that one can almost always find such a head position in any group of women" (Key 1975:152).

But that wouldn't be sexy?

I think that sexy can also involve a degree of class .. something that is often lost (e.g. paris hilton) .. and tilting the head doesn't fix that (definitely not for her) .. the world doesn't HAVE to be all about sex???(again .. maybe a generational thing???) .. sigh .. I dont even know if that makes sense .. I guess .. there is more to being sexy than tilting your neck/??

when i tilt my head in a pic , its not a concious 'oh have to tilt my head' and it not like my head is over on my shoulder or anything, usually just cos i cant really 'fake smile' so i kinda just be silly to get a half decent smile, or to make my nose look smaller :o and i agree about not wanting to look like a school photo or mug shot.
"to 'tilt' or not to 'tilt', that is the question"
*toddles off to find a head tilt pic*

Great tilt! But where is the pout? You can't do the tilt without the pout? :p

What was the trend back in the "old days" when we were at school Bec? I can't remember now!
Sit up straight and look at the camera. The class was in rows with girls sitting at teh front (knees together, hands on laps), a mixed row and then boys standing on chairs or similar at the back row. Your teacher stood to one side. There was the obligatory child with a pulled face too.

PMSL!
Or in my daughters Grade 1 entire school photo (first year of school being open) .... she was standing, 2nd row in the centre and she had her hand up her skirt picking her bum/undies out of bum! Oh that is a photo to remember!

i don't think that yearbooks now adays would have the head tilt because the photographers always straighten your head so you look demented in your photo:yelclap::laughing:

L33T is some dumb talk people do... I dunno why. Because they're idiots. Apparently hackers used to use it so they couldn't be "googled" (if google was around back then...but ykwim). They'd type like idiots so it was harder for them to be discovered. This is in the net's early days I think... so they were kinda clever to come up with their own language... but it's pathetic for 14-year-olds to start using it just because they think it makes them look cool. It doesn't...lol.
Hang on, I'll google and see what it it says...

That might help...:)

I'm too lazy to read the rest of the thread but I've been tilting my head in photos since I was little! I guess when I was younger it was the whole look sweet and innocent and now it's finding the most flattering angle! With technology today the fact that you can delete photos you don't like we have the time to find what angle we look the best from or maybe evolution has created larger egos over time
