 My DD is currently sufferring from a nasty bout of gastro. She's been sick now since last Wed night and doesn't seem to be improving. She started off with a runny nose but then started vomiting the next day and has also had diarrhoea since Sunday. I've taken her to the Dr twice (Sat and Mon) and he told me to switch to a soy formula and eliminate all dairy till she's better, and feed her a very bland diet (apples, rice, veggies, chicken). We're also using pedialyte fluid replacement drink.

It's now 7 days and she just doesn't seem to be improving. She can keep very little food down and the soy formula doesn't seem to be helping. She's losing a heap of weight, you can see all her ribs and she just looks gaunt in the body.

My SIL is a pharmacist and she said to stop formula altogether for today and see if that helps to settle her tummy. She thought that these bugs usually only last 3-4 days and that we should be seeing some inprovement by now. If she's no better tomorrow we're off to see the Dr again.

Just wondering who else has had their child sick with this lately (especially in Brisbane) and how long before they got over it.

I agree with stopping the formuls. Even thought it is not dairy, it is thick and 'milky' and will not sit well in her tum. Just make sure you get the pedialyte into her, even if it it 10 ml every 20 mins or something, she has to keep her fluids up. As for the diarhoea, if she is not eating anything, the gut has nothing to irritate it and cause the runs, so no food or formula may help that too. I know of a few people from Brissy from another forum and it has been going around. We have all had it here in Perth too though, it is rather yuck. :barf:

Yes my DS had this a couple of weeks ago. He actually had the diarrohea for about 10 days. The doctor told me that in babies this bug is lasting about 10 days but only 24 hours in adults (I got it too). He got it again the other night but it seemed to just be a 24 hour thing that time. My bubs didn't really lose too much weight with it though. I'd keep going back to the doctor - that's definitely not right if you can see ribs sticking out. My Mum actually ended up in hospital on a drip because of dehydration.

Sol was really bad for about 48 hours but his tum tum was unsettled for five days and he only had bland food. I also had it for 10 hours...so HORRIBLE. Two friends who came over while Sol had it also got sick.

My DD, 4mths old, recently had a virus that made her unwell for 12days
It started late on a wed night and she had vomiting for about 24hrs then the rest of the time she had severe diarrea. Every time she drank something it would go straight thru her.

I took her to the dr on the friday and she was already dehydrated. The dr told me to stop giving her formula for 24 hrs and just make sure she had at least 30mls of Pedalyte every hour...they work out the ammount needed to hydrate them using their body weight...DD needed 1000mls a day. I ended up giving her formula before bed that night coz she wasn't sleeping, then continued the pedialyte in place of all her bottles, except the first and last ones, til she was well.

She has only just stopped having diarrea earlier this week. She seemed to get better all of a sudden, the diarrea went from every time she drank to between 1-3 a day for a couple of days then she was fine and back to her normal, hungry, self.

It is a nasty bug, and does seem to be hittin little kids harder than adults. If you are worried about your bub take her back to the dr, or even the hospital.

I hope she feels better soon :)

Oh, and we are on the southside of Brisbane

My dd (14ths) had it not long ago.
She ended up in hospital for the night because she was getting dehydrated.
She started with a runny nose and just not being herself. It was so scary, there was nothng I could do for her. It took about a week to get over it fully. I hope your dd is feeling better soon! :fingerscrossed:

My Dd got it last night around 1.30 and was vomiting until 10 this morning. She seems better now but is still listless and cranky. This is our second bout after a really bad episode where it went through the whole family three weeks ago.

It was so tiring then...we're hoping this time is a little easier and hopefully not as contagious.

Our eldest son got it Friday night , was a bit off colour on Saturday and yesterday the worst part hit the poor little mite. He's 3 and wears undies all day so trying to get a nappy on him to stop messy accidents was so hard. He was that run down he went to bed at 3.30pm Yesterday and bless his heart he woke up wild at 5.30am!!! a bit better. Just hoping it doesnt get the baby

DS woke up on Fri morning covered in diarrhea and then vomited a few times and I thought he was getting over it as he hadn't spewed since Fri lunchtime but then woke up covered in spew and diarrhea on Sat morning. Took him to the hospital and they said to give him 5mL every 5mins to prevent dehydration. He wouldn't take any of the gastrolyte, pedialyte, hydrolyte stuff, but on Sat would have diluted apple juice (hospital said 1/4 dilution) and I bf him every half hour. I thought he was getting over it again as he hadn't spewed since 4am Sunday, but has just vomited again!!! (8pm Monday!!!!) And still has had diarrhea. Poor little man, I wish I could do more for him. He won't have any solids, either. The weight is just dropping off him :crying: And I am exhausted. He isn't sleeping too well because I think he is waking up with stomach cramps as he generally poos while I bf.

Our little family had this bug just over three weeks ago.
Originally a little girl from our mum's group caught it from someone on her first day in childcare and now its gone through 6 out of the 7 mums/bubs.
For us it started with DD vomitting three times one evening and then she was listless and off food/milk, only tolerated water for 24hrs, but took in total 5 days til she was herself again (thankfully the vomitting stopped after 1 day and no runs!). The following day I caught it, and then the day after DH caught it. We were all fully recovered 6 days later, in time for our holiday.

Its a nasty bug and I heard that some childcare centres/schools and even the Mater Childrens closed briefly to try to contain it.
Hope any mums/bubs still suffering from it, get better soon!!
