I have been offered some casual work back at my old job. My son is 3 months and is exclusively breastfed. I am thinking about buying a breast pump and expressing but I have tried him on a bottle before and he doesnt seem to know what to do. This was just to try him on some cooled boiled water with a bottle that came with the steriliser, so I'm not sure if it had something to do with the cheapy teat.

I am thinking because he loves his rubber dummy, maybe he would take a rubber teat?

Can you buy them for bottles?

I am very anxious leaving him with my MIL while I go to work, especially if he wont take a bottle. And I am wondering maybe instead of expressing I could use formula for a couple of feeds a day, or maybe expressing and formula?

I would like to hear what other mums have done.

Are there any tricks to getting a baby used to a bottle?

:)

rubber (latex) teats aren't popular as they cant be put in a steriliser (I think they melt??) - and the dont last as long as silicone ..

you'd probably be better looking for a silicone teat in the SAME SHAPE as his dummy ... there are stacks of shapes on the market...

:hugs:

my ds is 9 months now but I did go back to work 1 night a week from 2 months. He took the avent teet the first time (I tried him the week before so I would know that he would take a bottle) but then tried again and he wasn't interested.

We cought a pigeon perilistastic???? or whatever the word is, and he still has 2 bottles a week of expressed milk with no problems. Ds never had a dummy though but I don't see why that would make any difference.

It's up to you if you want to express or go formula. I expressed because I never wanted to use formula. each to their own though

hope this helps

oooh I meant to add that for introducing the bottle the first time - it would be better to express (although it does involve some effort :o ) - but then at least at the start the taste would be familiar... only the bottle different???

then when he is used to the bottle you could introduce formula ?? (again- some people on this site will say differently) :D

just a thought ...

I suppose I am "some people";) .

Expressing would be preferable to formula as it Formula is reconstituted cows milk with addatives and comes with all health risks associated with the introduction of cows mik, and it is not sterile and often has contaminates included.

A teat as close to the shape of your dummy is a good hint and the australian breastfeeding assc have alot of info under returning to work, you might find helpful and reasuring.

When I returned to work I used a sipper cup/straw cup as my boys would not take a bottle to begin with. My mother used to just give them little sips throughout the day. Eventually my second took to drinking from the bottle after about 4 weeks ( I only worked 2 days a week) It was always EBM in the cup or bottle (my first son stuck with the cup). When I finished work they would have a couple of catch up feeds and cuddles to make up for the time I was away, its such a lovely thing to share after a busy day at work I found it very relaxing to wind down with my baby.

Hope you find your way:)

I was advised to use the Nuk teats. They are smaller and are shaped the way a baby sucks from the nipple.

I have had a few friends that have had similar problems and I have told them to use Nuk and they have had success.
