View Full Version : Leaving a newborn in the same nappy all night?

Forgive me if this is a very dumb question but can a newborn go all night in the same cloth nappy?
That even sounds naive to me but I was reading a book the other day that advocated co-sleeping and one of the reasons this mum though her bubs always slept so well during the night in those first few months when she was co-sleeping was because when the baby would stir for a feed she'd simply roll over to whatever side she was due to feed from and breast feed without disturbing the baby and then roll back over to where she was and go to sleep. She said she thought one of the reasons they learned to sleep so well was because they weren't being picked up to feed or disturbed to change a nappy. She said she would just use a good quality disposable over night and change the baby when she did the morning/breakfast feed.
Now this being my first I wasn't sure whether this was really possible. I have always been under the impression that newborns poop at almost everyfeed and thus you change them at every feed. We'll be using BBB through the night so I know they hold alot of wee but how much poo would there be in that time.
Help please. Is this all a little far fetched?
It depends on your baby. My DS used to poo once a week or every ten days as a newbie, so that was great! My DD on the other hand was a poo in every nappy kind. I would always change her, mainly because it would be uncomfortable, but also if they are sitting in poo they will get rashes quite easily. It all depends on your bub.

I wouldn't think most newborns can be left in the same nappy all night. DD pooed far too much for that - even if the nappy was going to hold that much wee, it wouldn't last because she she'd poo (and whinge).
I would plan for extra nappies... not for one to last the full night.

I wouldn't leave a baby in the same nappy overnight. I slept with mine and she didn't wake at night either, not even for a feed. I would change her nappy when I went to bed, around 11pm then I'd wake through the night to wee and change her again then, but I'd make life easier by having the bucket under the bed and a stash of nappies beside the bed and change her on the bed and she wouldn't wake up. She wouldn't poo all the time, but I thought she'd be uncomfortable because she'd wee lots. Depends on the baby and depends on how you felt about that. Some babies get rashes a lot easier than others too. Oh, and I was a cloth mum even overnight :D

I changed him overnight if he had a poo. But otherwise - isn't that the reason for bamboo nappies? :D My boy did poo a lot in the early weeks, but I was getting up to feed him then anyway because I was still on my Breastfeeding 'L' plates :D After a little while he changed into a once-a-week poo-er, and a bamboo nappy would be fine for 12-13 hours overnight.
He's not the type to get rashes though (only from disposables, interestingly!)

My boy poos far too much to go a whole night in one nappy lol every time he woke (which was alot!) I would end up changing his nappy.
If you don't have a super pooper and you're using a good quality nappy it would probably be ok. :)
As a newborn you'll find they poo almost every nappy change...
so in the first few weeks I'd check their nappy every time they woke.
Once they weren't pooing at night anymore, I'd leave them in the same one.

:iagree:
Now that Kaitlyn sleeps through the night i dont change her..
I changed her in the early days when she woke for a feed and had pooed but now that she only poos once a week (and its during the day) and she sleeps 10ish hours straight i dont change her overnight..
Although obviously if she pooed then i would.. ;)

For my baby this would be impossible seeing as he poo'ed every 2 hours :/
You can get some pretty fab nappies which would last all night but I think at least one change is good as newborns wee a lot too.
I didn't get out of bed at night for every change though because that is what DP is for ;)
So I found (and still find) co-sleeping tops as I could stay in bed and DP would get out and change him for me :bee:
As soon as Oscar stopped poo'ing so frequently at about 2/3 months, I never got out of bed at night again, I got some bamboo nappies and stayed put all night...bliss!

Yep as everyone has said they are poo'ing monsters at first so they need to be changed heaps but once that settles down you can go overnite no dramas.
For us Squeak settled at around 3wks to the every 10day poo ( the one you had to duck for cover from lol ! ) so this meant he either used his BBB's or his VBSN with his longies & this was awesome !
I dunno how people get their babies to stay asleep through nappy changes cause neither of mine have ! So a really good nite nappy once they stop poo'ing works a treat

If they don't poo then it will be fine. My poo for a few weeks, but then after that I don't change them at al during the night.
Yep, it's all a question of poo, and nappy quality.
From about 8 weeks, DS stopped pooing at night, so I stopped changing him at night. Good night nappies kept him dry. When he did poo at night, I'd change him.

It really does depend on the baby.
My friend's baby used to go all night in the same nappy (without pooing) and be fine. I tried this only once, one night when Kieran didn't poo during the night, and he woke up drenched in urine and I felt awful :(.
That was with Huggies but I imagine he wouldn't have been able to go all night in cloth at that age either. He just wee'ed so much when he was tiny.

Are you talking about cloth though ?
A really good cloth nappy draws all moisture away & breathes then if combined with a good cover like wool it breathes even more so isnt anything like a gross disposable.

Again you cant compare a disposable to a good cloth nappy.
If using a really good hardy nite nappy there will be no issue with wetness especially if using a liner which allows bubs to stay dry.

I leave DS in the one nappy all night now. We too co-sleep so I just roll over, pop a boob in his mouth and go back to sleep.
However he would poop every nappy change for the first 2weeks so I would change him overnight but once he stopped that, I just put him in a well boosted nappy so it lasts the distance, no problems so far!

Unfortunately I didnt discover mcn till dd2 was 6mths old, but from what I know now I would change if they pooed and leave when they wet. Obviously it will depend on your bubs. dd2 was bf for 16 weeks and pooed 5-8 times a day until we started formula, but was a light wetter.
I suppose its just waiting until bubs arrive to see what you get and go form there. :)

Hudson has a nappy change after every feed, and a lot of the time in between too as he has four hourly feeds. I give him his last bottle at 11pm and change him and then put him to bed and he's asleep for the night. I don't dusturb him during the night as he sleeps through until 7am and then has a feed and nappy change but if he does stir during the night i change him and put him back to bed. When he was feeding during the night i would change his nappy after his feeds and then put him back to bed but he doesn't poo during the night anymore so i don't feel the need to disturb his or my sleep lol.

My kids have all been able to go all night in Huggies without waking up wet. Yes the nappy would be quite full while they were tiny, but their little bottoms were dry.

if my boy didnt pee so much he filled a sposie then i wouldnt but he wakes up because he is uncomfy.. the time he did sleep through he didnt wee much. if there was poo i would always change him...
When my girls would get up at night for a bf, I would always change their nappy first, then bf and back to cot to sleep - no probs.
I'm not sure if my girls are big wee-ers, but their nappies (sposies or MCN) were always full!!

There is no way we could have gone all night without changing- Laura pooped basically every feed, and sometimes I would have to change her before AND after her feed cause she would poop twice! (complete toad she was lol) And even if she had not pooped the nappy would be wringing wet as she was having 3 feeds a night, that is alot of liquid. But time will tell with your bub :) You might have a light wetting, non-pooper and then with the right nappy you could breeze through the nights, it all depends on the baby! Hope for the best and plan for the worst is my motto lol

I just thought I would add I would never leave a baby unchanged in a pooped in nappy- it is a sure fire way to have them get nappy rash.... and you dont want your bedroom to be smelly either! (although newborn poo isnt as toxic as bubs on solids lol)
