View Full Version : What is the big issue with 'full' pill and breastfeeding?

Is it a supply issue or a cross-into-milk issue.

Cobey has one feed every couple of days, in the mornings... and I really don't think I have much left in the ol' moo-juice-makers.

I'm currently on Implanon but am not impressed with my period sneaking up on me every.two.weeks, the same thing happened on the minipill so I'm thinking of having implanon removed and going on the 'full' pill until my husband and I are ready to TTC.

But what are the implications for that on breastfeeding? Is it just a supply thing?

Cheers.

You make chocolate milk instead :p lol - I would love to give you more information (but I don't have any idea on how it changes the composition of breastmilk I am sorry).

Do you have a link or something? Where did you hear that from?

It messes with your natural hormones, and your natural 'womanly' hormones are the ones that make milk, so it stands to reason that your milk will be negatively affected.

That's my science-matific 'splaynation anyway

Check kellymom, I'm sure they'd have the more technical knowledge.

I understand that my milk would be negatively affected but I want to know HOW... and in particularly how will it affect the ratbag.

Kellymom says it's only a low supply issue, I can deal with that.... OM if you do have any links to what you said can you shoot them my way

Just did a quick internet search and here is what I found out -- hope it helps

"Both the combination pill and mini-pill can be started immediately after an abortion. If you have just given birth, you will need to wait at least two weeks after birth and at least six-weeks if you are breastfeeding to start the combination pill. However, the combination pill has been shown to lower a woman’s milk production as well as affect the quality of the milk. Additionally, traces of the hormones contained in the pill will be present in breast milk. The mini-pill can be started immediately after childbirth, regardless of whether or not you are breastfeeding. It has not been found to affect the amount or quality of breast milk produced. While the hormones have not been proven to have any ill effects on the child, some women may still be concerned about exposing her child to the Pill’s hormones. There are many different, non-hormonal birth control options that you can choose if you are breastfeeding."

Most of the websites said the same thing ---

I spoke to my doctor today and he confirmed that small amounts of hormone will come through the milk and so, especially because he's a boy, it's best to stop feeding him if I'm going to go on the pill.
He hasn't had moomies in 2 days as it is.... I think i'm going to stop showing him (he normally gets all about moomies when I get out of the shower or something) and stuff :p see how he goes!
