I am currently doing an assessment to do with play experiences and the way that they help develop motor skills. We have to come up with play experiences and then do them with a child and record observations, etc. I have decided I want to do story reading as a play experience but am not sure if it really benefits fine motor, gross motor or social skills at all. Does anyone think it does or doesn't and why?

It would be more a social and cognitive experience, unless it's an action one like some stories have a little felt board to play out the story as you read, that would make it a fine motor skill as well as social and cognitive.
Those lift the flap type books would use fine motor skills.
At our library story time they do action songs between the stories, that's gross motor skills.
At library storytime they also learn social skills on some of the more interactive stories.

As Jo said, a lift the flap book would be really good for fine motor skills, as would a sensory touchy feely book.

it would still be fine motor even if you get the child to help turn the pages.
good luck with it all pm if you need any more help.
I am doing my Diploma too.

i agree you can say that they are developing their fine motor skills by page turning and gross motor skills by adding actions but i am just wondering why you would chose book reading as the activity when your goal is to develop motor skills. possibly there would be an activity better suited to this goal. i have my diploma and also teach diploma students at tafe. good on you for doing your diploma and seeking advice from parents but i just feel you could be making things more difficult for yourself than necessary. good luck
