Hi May Mums,

I've been lurking around now that I feel like this pregnancy is actually real.

My first was born via emergency c-sec & I've always been disapointed that I missed out on that skin on skin contact once he was born.
I hated the fact that I only saw him for a few mins before they took him away although there was nothing wrong with him, just he went to the nursery as part of their routine & I laid there getting stitched up listening to the obs talk about "golf" like I wasn't even there when all I wanted was to hold my child

Anyway, I don't know if I've been nieve or a push over but I've just been looking at threads under c-sections & found out that some people are asking their Obs for maternal assisted c-sections!! Blows my mind!! Although I'm not interested in assisting I am definately going to ask my obs for skin on skin contact once our baby is out :D

I am just so excited at the prospect of having this experience come true :yelclap:

For the mums that have already had a child via c-sec was your experience similar to mine or did you get skin on skin contact when your baby was born?

ok, I might've jumped the gun a bit because I was so excited.

I've been told they might not do skin on skin in theatre because it's too cold but they might do it in recovery.

I'll be checking with our Obs & Hosp next appointment though.

Had a emergency c-section with my daughter. I was told during the preparation that as soon as she was 'delivered' she would be taken to the table adjacent to me to have the cord cut and apgar test. As soon as this was done she was given to me, but it was a bit awkward as I had a drip in one hand and not much room on my side of the curtain. So, I didn't hold her for long. But as soon as I was stitched up (listening to the doctors talk about gardening) and out in recovery she was in my arms and I didn't let go for a few hours - except for her daddy to have a hold, of course!

So, I think my experience was similar to yours. I'm hoping for a VBAC this time, but we'll see how it goes.

Same here! just wondering why you're having a c-section again, do you have medical complications? If you feel strongly about the skin to skin why not try a VBAC?

Emegency c-sec for the first, general anaesthetic it was horrible didnt see bub till 2 hours after the op.
2nd was trial labour VBAC with no success after 11 hrs labour and another general anaesthetic:thumbsdown:. So angry.:banghead:
All I heard on the way to theatre was ob talking about bird flu and his stupid chooks. They should have been talking me through what was happening to me.
2 horrid birth experiences, and 5 miscarriages later and Im trying again.
You gals will be fine cos you sound like youre organized, know what you want and not scared to demand it..... GO FOR IT, DONT MISS OUT ON THIS SPECIAL EXPERIENCE LIKE I DID. DEMAND WHAT YOU WANT.

After an 18 hour labour my DD was born via emergency c-section. I had about 3 minutes of skin on skin contact, then they took her away and did the Apgar test, cleaned & rapt her up and gave her back to me while they sewed me up. It was a great experience.

They took her away and my hubby went with her while I had to go to recovery for what felt like forever. I kept saying, 'I'm fine, I just want to go and be with my baby'. About 30 mins later we were all reunited and overall the whole experience was good (except me having to lie around in recovery without my baby, but I knew she was with daddy).

I'm having another c-section on 22/05/08 and will be requesting some skin on skin contact and lots of cuddles again while sewing me up.

Goodluck!

EMSMUM - I envy you! Lucky thing getting that contact without having to plead with them. Fingers crossed it happens for you again this time.

PrincessJasmine - No medical condition for c-sec only that Dr & Hosp doesn't want to risk rupture. I guess that's the private sector covering themselves. Little disappointed that I can't even try for VBAC but I suppose at the end of the day as long as the baby is in good health that's all that matters. We had only been up here for a little while before I needed to find an obs & hosp so went with the best I think I could find.

My Dr is happy for some skin on skin but the Hosp told me that it really comes down to the staff that are on that day (which really p*ssed me off!) & when hubby goes off with baby to be weighed etc when I'm getting stitched & in recovery he can ask for skin on skin until I'm out of recovery (which is better than nothing but he isn't exactly going to be able to start feeding it is he? Hmmm...).
We can also ask that the baby be brought into recovery but that would be after they have done what they need to.

Sounds crazy doesn't it, hosp procedure over rules all. For Pete's sake I just want to be with my baby!

My first was failed labour turned into a c/section, bub was born taken over to the table to be cleaned, cut the cord wrapped up i was given a quick look, and i mean QUICK, then taken away i didnt see him for 2hrs after that, i was peed off.they wouldnt let anyone in to recovery not even my mum or dh.

Second was a repeat c/section, much to my dissaproval, but after he was born and checked i got cuddles for a while wilst being stiched up, it was awkward having not much room but t was nice then he was taken away and i went off to recovery. I did feel closer this time to bub i think. Although i feel exactly the same about both my boys, they are georgous luv em.

the midwives at my hospital insist on skin to skin contact. So even though I had a c/s with my DD I still had that contact. I assume it will be the same with my 2nd.
