Hi All.

Im just wondering (though I would use it as a last resort) if maxalon is safe to use in pregnancy? Im 6 weeks and have had bad nausea all weekend and nothing is working! Im over it already! :crying:

It is safe to use but it did absolutely nothing for me. I had hyperemesis from week 5 til I gave birth, sometimes vomiting 25 times+ in a day.

I was prescribed it for my m/s but it didn't do jack.
The thing that I found worked best was eating almonds (they soak up the stomach acids which rise up to make you feel ick). I kept a container of them on hand and had a few every half hour or so.

Also try anything ginger - ginger ale, gingernut biscuits, ginger tea..

Yes, maxalon is considered a safe drug to take throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. There are other anti nausea drugs like stemitil that are considered unsafe in the first and third trimesters.

Like the posters above I had pretty shocking MS from weeks 3-40 and vomited all the time through all 3 of my pregnancies. Maxalon didn't stop the vomiting but it did help to keep the constant nausea at bay so that I could function at work and at home. It can take a while (days/weeks) to kick in properly and for you to get over the initial side effects some people get of sleeplessness and anxiousness and then the secret is to keep up the constant dose and never miss a tablet or your back to square one.

I hope your MS goes soon. Everything is worth trying - keep hydrated and try keeping something in your stomach at all times, eat ginger things and drink peppermint tea - everybody has an old remedy that works for them or someone they know. Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy.

I ended up taking the ondansatron wafers. They dissolve on your tongue so that if you vomit straight away its already absorbed in your system
They aren't classed as safe as the maxalon but I think it has something to do with how many people have actually used them.

Thanks for that guys. I dont have the vomitting (fingers crossed it never starts) but just constant nausea! Im so sick of it. Ive tried ginger tea, but i cant stand the taste of, so if we go to the shops later I might try and get some dry ginger ale. I might go try some almonds now too. I can deal with all the other complaints, ie, the dizziness, aches and pains etc, but NOT the nausea! I hate being pregnant already! :crying:

I used it when my M/S took a turn for the worst around 9 weeks. I only used it when I was really, really desperate. I found that it kept the sickness at bay but it made me very drowsy. So, when I went to work I couldn't really do much anyway because I was just so tired. I think I only ended up having about 4 all up.

I'm now 20 weeks and I still throw up every couple of days but it feels like a different type of sickness now, not nausea.

I hope you feel better soon, I know it is just the pits.

Maxalon is a category B drug (although I was told by my dr is was cat A:confused:) but it did nothing at all for me, not a bit.

I had constant nausea with #1, I only threw up a couple of times but felt terrible all the time. I tried all kinds of things but the only thing that made any difference was the Morning Well CD. Don't ask me how it works but it does. You need to listen to it through head phones so either an MP3 or portable CD player, there were days when I listed to it 15 times. My sister in law was hospitalised during her first pregnancy with severe M/S and with her second the CD kept her well enough that she didn't need to be admitted. The best $70 I spent through out my pregnancy.

maxalon is fine don't put up with it as I did with DD1 & DD2
this time I actually had it terrible again and ended up on Zofran which is not as safe as maxalon but maxalon did nothing for me and I couldn't function without it and had ended up in hospital and with a 2 & 3yold I had to have something to get me through

I dont trust anything really. IMO if you can bear it do it. MY MS was AWFUL and I mean AWFUL. I felt like I was going to die for 3 weeks. from the second I woke up to the second my head hit the pillow I was sick. I was vommitting all day. I carried around plastic bags all the time. I would be in the shops and be sick. I was working full time and vommitting all day. I felt awful. I lost heaps of weight. I could barely eat. I was still vommitting once a day in the last 2 months. The day my son was born I woke up and vommitted. I dont care what the OB say I would rather put up with it than take any risk. but thats just me. I just dont trust anything. My battles (which were a lot) while I was pregnant helped me to deal with a NB and BF. If I hadn't perservered through MS and learnt to bear it maybe I wouldnt have been able to deal with my struggles with BF(which were also a lot). I am not criticising anyone at all. What others do is fine by me. It might sound silly or I might sound paranoid but the odds for having a healthy baby were against me from the beginning I wasnt game to risk a thing.

Hi Leisa21 I was the same as you with DD1 & DD2 and didn't want to take anything in the risk that I would harm our baby especially afte it taking 2 yrs to conceive DD1 however when you have it solid for 25 weeks and still have a 2 & 3yold to look after really there is no other option than to take something to get you through the day. The medication doesn't make you feel 100% but it stops the vomitting and definately makes getting through the day alot easier!!!

Also I have a brilliant obs whom I trust 100%!!!

I know what you mean. I am terrified about falling pregnant. I want another baby with all my heart and soul but how can I look after DS sick all the time. I am stubborn so I hope that outways it and I can get through it like I did last time. I also have a very supportive family so I just have to pray that it doesnt come down to it. I'm not wanting to critisise at all i realise that everyone and every situation is different, its just how I feel. I dont like the idea of putting anything in me I even have issues with panadol. I get a lot of reactions from different drugs as we never had them as children or teens, Mum found natural remedies. I think i have an intolerance so I dont know what will happen to bubs IYKWIM.

BTW your bubs EDD is our Wedding Anniversary - good day :p
