Went to put ds down for his nap today and he jumped out of the cot not once, but three times in a row. We'd been thinking of moving him into a 'big bed' anyway, so I did it today.

The only problem is he won't stay in it! As soon as I leave the room, he's out of it. How do I get him to stay in his bed? Usual he moves around in his cot for a few minutes to get comfy, but now he can get out of the bed he's got the whole room to play with. (All of his toys have been taken out except two of his sleep teddies)

Please help!

lol - he's made himself a little pallet on the floor with his pillowand blanket and was using that for a bit - but now it looks like its time for more games.

Any suggestiongs, anyone? Please?

Just keep putting him back...and say "its time to sleep"

Eventually he will click on that you are just going to keep putting him back and stay in bed

It may take a while but he will get it:yes:

Good luck

I have done this with my god-daughter on a few occasions and it has worked:)

If my DS is tired enough he'll happily lie down and go to sleep on his own but some of the time he's just not interested or he's over tired so I just lie down with him and cuddle him until he's asleep.

I tried cuddling him to sleep, but it seems to get him more wound up (always has though - if mum's around, it's play time)

Will try to keep putting him back. Do I do it whenever he gets out of bed, or at certian intervals (like every few minutes)?

When I have done it with GD...I put her back, go into the lounge, I then can usually hear if she has gotten up, I just go in gently say, "time to have a sleep" put her back and then go back into another room and keep repeating until she stays.

Most of the time she is tired and needs to sleep, after a little while she gives up and goes to sleep.

Is he noticably tired?

Persistance...just don't give up, keep taking him back to the bed and tell him it is time for a sleep.

He is very tired at the moment. His usual sleep is straight after lunch (in bed around 12.30) but he needed one eairler today as well. He's yawning and rubbing his eyes and almost falling over, but still not going to sleep! :(

I used to wait outside his door and say back to bed and put him in maybe 50 times, soon, he'll get the message most times he would fall asleep at his door but now knows the command ,'In bed' and we can leave the door open and he doesn't come out. He is 19 mths now. He gave in alot sooner than Ds1 and Ds1 still is not a good sleeper even now at nearly 4.

Thanks all, the thought of standing outside his room doing that scares me, but dh is putting him to sleep now, so we'll see how we go. :fingerscrossed:

melbryan, can you tell me how many nights it took of doing that?

Can't give you any advice as we've not had this problem, but just wanted to say how cute he sounds! Sorry, but from this side of the computer it sounds really cute. How did he go for the rest of the day?

 he probably does. We took him down to the park and let him run around. DH just put him to bed, and he went to sleep straight away! lol, typical :p He can always get him to sleep. :goodvibes:

Update -

Well, he fell out of bed. (oops!) Went in a gave him cuddles, but the more we'd go into settle him, the more he stayed up. His cot is now along side his big bed (instead of a rail cause we don't have one yet), and he has a doona folded at the end of the bed, which he fell asleep on once for a few mintues before he decided the bed was better.

He's woken up a few times, which is normal, but put himself back to sleep without wandering around the room for hours, which is great! Now all we have to do is get him to sleep on the bed during the day and we'll be set!

Thanks for all of your help and advice! :hugs: to all!

Really does sound like he is getting there. We did it for about 4-5 days. DS2 also has a cot along side his bed and in the day would put him in there now he hates it and knows he is in trouble when he goes in there. He is pretty good unless he is teething and wakes throughout the night. In saying that soem nights he is good but other nights wehave to shut the door and have a night light in there and he feels not so alone. He likes quiet too and we find whent he door is shut it give him the quietness to sleep.
He listens to DH when I am fed up, he gets told firmly to stay in bed and he does after that.

last night was amusing. Not. I'm feeling really crock again, and as I was laying with him, trying to get him to sleep, I had to blow my nose, so I leftthe room for awhile, and while I was hooting away, I could hear him crying, so I started :crying: as well, then next thing we know, everything went silent.

I started to think that he'd fallen and knocked himself out or something, but no. He'd just done his usual 'I don't wanna go to bed...

We'd spent probably an hour trying to get him off to sleep, and that was all he wanted to do. I can just hear him thinking 'Mummy and Daddy are so silly sometimes!'
