I'm afraid that you are not going to much luck at Spotlight - they don't sell much in the way of nappy making materials, other than polar fleece and microfleece.

I've yet to find a Spotlight that stocks (or has even heard of...) bamboo, hemp or PUL.

What sort of nappies are you planning to make? There are so many different types and everyone has a preference to what works best for them and their baby.

TBH i havent given it alot of thought.. just seen some pictures and thought they looked easy.. might just have to research them a little more..

This is what I normally buy from spotlight:
Polar Fleece - outside layer/s
Micro Fleece - inside layer
Flannelette - outside and/or inside of fitteds
Quilting cotton - outside layer of fitted or outside layer of pocket/AIO over a PUL layer
Panne Velvet - outside layer of pocket/AIO over a PUL layer
Velveteen and Corduroy - outside layer of fitted
Velour - inside layer of fitted
Think of it this way, anything with cotton in it will absorb the moisture so will not work as an outside layer unless it is over a PUL layer or used on a fitted and anything that is 100% poly will repel moisture so should be ok as an outside layer (though thinner fabrics may need two layers or a PUL layer).

Also threads and swimwear elastic and if you don't have much in the way of sewing stuff - pins, good quality scissors, fabric marking pens and a seam ripper.

You could use cotton terry as soaker layers, but the nappies wouldn't hold much and would probably need to be changed after each wee. You could also get some Ripstop Nylon to use as a water resistant layer, but I haven't tried this.

I use Bamboo or Hemp as my soaker layers and you can buy these online. You can also get PUL online. There are supposed to be some good specials on at the moment for the GDUNH so if you haven't registered I would do it just to get the discount and for the links to the good fabric stores.

I haven't had much success with the spotlight snaps so I use the polyresin snaps, but that requires the purchase of a snap press (see snaps australia). I would stick with velcro. If you are trying to make a nappy stash as cheaply as possible then normal velcro is ok (get the sew in not the sticky stuff) but if you want to make nappies to last a bit longer then I would get either HTH or loop 2000 quality Velcro fastener. You can get either of these online at the same stores as the bamboo and hemp.

Sorry for the long post and I hope that helps more than confuses you.

Peta.

Sorry, I just realised how long and confusing that is.

In short, if it was my first go and I wanted to make some nappies either cheaply or as practice I would get:

Outside layer - flannel, quilting cotton, cord, velveteen or any other cotton
Inside layer - microfleece or velour
Soaker layers - cotton terry (but hemp and bamboo really are much better)

This will make a fitted that needs a cover to be waterproof.

My first pockets are made from 2 layers of polar fleece outer, microfleece inner and bamboo trifold booster (big square you fold in three and stuff inside). These don't need a cover and I use these at home every day.

Good luck and have fun. :D

I love making nappies for DD and playing with all that fabric makes it even more fun.

All the best, and don't forget to post pics of what you make.
