Hi there,

I have fallen off the cloth wagon in the past month as my GK hemp inserts and my BG microfibre inserts stink. I have strip washed them many times, also with baking soda and lemon juice and without fail, each time DS wees, they smell awful.

Is there anything that can be done or is it time to overhaul them?

Cheers!

I believe you can get a special wash for the BumGenius and I would suggest emailing GK to ask their advice for their hemp boosters.

Is your child teething by any chance it makes inserts very whiffy :(

I find that the microfibre and hemp get a bit stinky, but once they've been hung out in the sun for a day they're back to normal.

I wash DS's nappies in the morning and leave them out all day, have you tried that?

Have you done a strip wash with dishwashing detergent or just with plain water?

I sometimes find my nappies get really stinky after we've had a real rainy period because they don't get enough sun, and I often just wash a small load and probably don't get the detergent right. I generally strip wash, then up the amount of detergent I use, and leave them in the sun for a whole day or more.

Thanks for your ideas.

They do get plenty of sun, and the strip wash I did was just hot water, although I did add some bicarb soda and lemon juice to one.

I'll try detergent and another day in the sun, but maybe it's just time for an overhaul!

Thanks!

How long have you had them? I have ones that I have had for over 12 months and some that I have had that long but are preloved..............and none of them are even close to needing replacing. How often do you wash? I find if I leave mine in the bucket longer than normal, like 3 days instead of 1 or 2 they can get a bit whiffy an dit can be harder to get rid of.

That could be an issue. There are some that have sat in the bucket for three or four days, but not on a regular basis.

They're only 7 months old, so I'll try the BG spray and see how we go.

Thanks all.

If you want to try a strip wash you can use 1 tablespoon of cheap, no frills dishwashing liquid and wash them in this and hot water, then keep washing them in plain hot water till the water runs clear and there's no detergent left. I haven't tried this as I have never needed to strip wash but it's supposed to work.
