View Full Version : How long does it take...?
How long does it take from the time your little one lets you know they need the toilet to the time they actually do something?
DS has asked to use the toilet a few times before, and the one time he actually did anything, it took 20 minutes of him sitting there.
This morning he asked to use the toilet again and after 15 minutes, nothing happened. As I'd already told him time for bed, I got him off the toilet, but had to fight him to get him back into his diaper and he was screaming and crying the whole time. :( I don't want to make a huge issue of it, but he seems to be using the toilet as a delaying tactic more than actually wanting to pee.
Can you just let him run around naked most of the time?
This is what we did with our boys.. just let them run around nude..
And because we were already outside, it didn't matter if they weed, we just say "good boy! You did a wee in the garden"
and once we observed them doing things such as taking their own nappies off to wee outside, or 'choosing' spots where to wee.. (eg: I'm going to wee on this bucket!)
We knew they had the bodily control ready to take take it to the toilet.
So we just gave them los of praise and incentives for weeing in the toilet.

He's only just turned 2 yeah???
Yeah, just turned two.
I'm not asking him if he wants to go or anything, he turned around and told me this morning.
I don't like the idea of him running around naked inside as we're in a rental and have carpets throughout, but in the arvo when the backyard is shaded we got out and he runs around. If he does a pee he lets me know ('mummy! mummy! puddle! Pee! MUMMY! puddle!')
We rent a fully carpeted house too... so no, we tried to get them to be outside when nude..
but soon enough they were capable of running outside to wee (figured this was MUCH easier for a 2 yr old than to have to aim into a little pot.... just run outside and let loose.)
But the odd occasions they DID wee inside, it was never a huge drama... dab it up with cold water, dab with vinegar and lightly spray with a tea-tree oil/water mix.
My problem is that we have a cat, and where she smells urine, she pees there too. We've had to replace our mattress and the one on the futon because she's pee'd on the covers (when they were in the basket) and even after multipul washings, she can still smell it, so she'd pee on the bed. I really don't want that to happen in this house, so I'm pretty adamant that no naked bums are to be inside. :p
Can anyone give me an idea of how long it takes from the time your little one lets you know they need the toilet to the time they actually do something?

My DS just "clicked" one morning.
He never went through a stage of letting me know he needed to go.
When I was trying to show him how to use a toilet, he sat there but never did anything.
One morning he woke up, and I heard him in the toilet, there he was sitting there doing a wee with a HUGE smile on his face :D Ever since he has either just taken himself to the toilet when he's needed to go, or has told me and then once he's at the toilet he goes straight away.
So I never went through what you're going through so I can't really give you a proper answe as to how long it takes them to actually do something from the time they have informed you.
Good Luck :)
Thanks anyway. He had a shower with DH today and told him he had to pee and did it straight away, so some progress, but I still don't know how long to leave him on the toilet for.
