Hello May Mummies to be,

My friend is due in May also and is quite naive about pregnancy and labour.

She has an OB appointment this week and I have told her she needs to ask questions instead of just being told what to do etc etc.

She is unsure what to ask and would like me to help her to put together a list of questions in regards to labour and birth.

I have the following questions that I feel are important, but was wondering if you could help me with some more please :)

p.s sorry for crashing your thread :D

1. If your waters break naturally, what time frame will the hospital put on you to deliver?

2. She has been told a water birth MAY be possible, clarify what circumstances would prevent a water birth.

3. What sort of mother / baby monitoring do they think is necessary and how frequently.

4. How far overdue are you allowed to go before they will schedule you for an induction.

Hey, I am not due in May but I am pregnant with my 4th so I can probably help you.

1. DO they routinely perform episiotomy - she needs to decide whether she would consent to one.

2. Managed or natural 3rd stage of labour...she needs to decide whether she wants the needle to deliver the placenta or wait for it to naturally deliver. Alot of hospitals (most) will routinely give this needle as the baby is being delivered - she would have to specify if she wants to wait. The Ob will probably say the needle is necessary but she should read up on it herself.

3. Hep B shot for baby after birth - is it necessary?

4. Vitamin K shot - same as above - pros and cons.

5. Who gets to cut the cord.

6. What methods of pain relief are available - natural and medical - BUT she needs to research the pros and cons.

7. In what situations would they perform a C Section.

8. What is their policy on discharge fom hospital ie. time frame....options.

9. Is she allowed a certain number of support people? Also, visiting policy for after the birth.

I am sure there are heaps more but I think she needs to not only ask her OB but do alot of reading for alternate points of view:yes: so she can decide for herself.
hth:)

Oh and what is their policy on having snacks during labour...some hospitals say noway while others will let you snack for energy.

Lol...had a bit of practice;)

Also, DO they do routine vaginal exams to check dilation? If so, how often and can they be refused.

Is their somewhere for her partner to sleep/rest?

Is her OB encouraging of breast feeding?
Can she breastfeed immdiately after birth?

What is their policy on ARM.

Can she choose her birthing position?

Hahah, now I am going to be thinking of this alll day;)
