Hi there

Just wanting some feedback on the best type of cups to use for a 6 month old breastfed baby who has recently started solids. I have a few different types, none that are working that well. As she has never taken a bottle or dummy I am not quite sure if she knows how to suck. She sort of gums or bites at the spout. With the valve in she doesn't get anything out, and with it out, the water just pours out. Some people have suggested trying a straw but others say she wouldn't be able to use one until she is one year old. She likes to hold the cup and can hold onto the two handled one. I am really looking for advice on the best type of spout or whatever to help her drink.

It might be best to try a few different types. Ds had trouble with a sippy cup, so we tried a straw in a glass of water. He 'got it' after a few tries, and then I bought a tommee tippee cup with the flexible rubbery straw. It's been fantastic.

I had the same problem with MJ.
What worked for me is to remove half of the valve. Take the spout end out but leave the hole end in iykwim. Can be a little tricky but that way it leaks a little, but wont run out unless you suck on it. I still do it for MJ as this way she drinks more :D

Hope that helps

My DD2 used a straw with no probs at about 7 months. I tried her on a variety of different cups and she still can't use them effectively but drinks out of a non-spill straw cup thingy without any troubles!!

I had the same prob last week and i finally found one. Its a Tommee Tipee Nuby, it has a silicone lid so all rubbery and it doesnt seem to leak unless pinched (with gums) It was only $7 out of woolies and just comes with clear cellophane wrapped around it.:smiliedance:

Thanks for the wonderful feedback. I will give a straw cup a try and also the Tommy Tippee one. A girl in Mother's Group had one of those that I saw last week. We'll see how we go!!
