Hi All,

I have two jobs and wanted to write a letter that informs one of my employers of my intention to take maternity leave. I don't know how well maternity leave will go down with this particular employer, therefore I was wondering if any of you ladies have a 'sample' letter of one you wrote, or any ideas on how I can best word the letter.

I can usually articulate letters fairly well myself, however I have preggy brain which in severely hindering my formal writing ability, LOL!
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as It is with some trepidation that I have to give maternity leave notice to this employer!

I penned a very simple letter and then sat down and told my boss face to face both times and then gave him the letter and basically just said, that is just so you have a record of it.

It basically just said....

I have recenty found out I am pregnant with an estimated due date of 6th of June 2006. I will be taking maternity leave for a period of 12 months commencing on 6th May 2006 and returning to work on 5th May 2007.

Regards,

Obviously the dates are just examples and also the amount of maternity leavewill vary from person to person - 3 months, 2 weeks - whatever tickles your fancy.

I found it easier to tell my bosses and just give the letter so they had the dates in writing.

In my job the company has a maternity package for us to fill out at each stage of our pregnancy eg expected confinement date(due date), When we are finishing up, Duration of leave and a letter of return to work. It made it all so easy but i had to get on both occasions a certificate from my gp stating my due date and how many weeks i was and attatch this to the notification letter.

This was mine - fairly straightforward and concise:

This letter is to formally advise you of my intention to commence maternity leave. This will comprise of three weeks annual leave from [date] until [date], and four months maternity leave from [date] until [date]. Maternity leave is subject to change to a longer period.

Please find attached a medical certificate from my obstetrician, Dr [name], confirming my condition and my estimated due date of [date]
.
If acceptable to you, I would also like to reduce my working hours from [date] until commencement of maternity leave, from 9.00am to 5.00pm to 9.00am to 2.00pm (or as required).

How dumb was I, thinking I'd only be taking 4 months leave! I entended it to a year and then quit!!

Hope this helps - good luck!

I copied mine from the NSW Industrial relations booklet (cheating I know) In my first letter I just advised them I was pregnant and would contact them later with my letter from the doc and intended amount of leave. My first letter has to be rec'd 10 weeks before taking leave and now my second I can leave til a month before I want to leave and gives me a little flexibility as Im still not sure when I want to leave and dont think I will right up til the day- but in saying that I dont work in small business where it will affect them so much.

Good luck with the narky boss- Im sure there is a QLD Ind Rel booklet letting you know of all your entitlements which may help with the letter. I had a look on their website but it isnt real friendly

Good luck

 I did the very same thing. I assured my work that I would be back to work in around 3 months, being the through and through career woman that I was - how wrong was I!

I started working nights when Thomas was 6 months, just so that we could afford to do stuff like eat - really helps! Then when thomas was around 11 1/2 months I decided that I actually am enjoying my life like I never had before and working nights pays well - certainly saved money not sending Thomas to day care, so I quit! I know I can always pick up my career again later down the track. But having too much fun now to worry about it. DH took it hardest though - funny that!

Fraggle, when I told my first Boss (not the narky one), she was quizzing me on how long I'd like to take off. I said I had no idea, as the baby is due in August and I have no idea how the baby or I'll be then. Needless to say, her comment was, 'well if you're anything like me, you'll get soooo bored you'll want to come back to work straight away'. She then went on to say that with each of her 3 pregnancies she's come back to work sooner and sooner'. I was completely dumbfounded by her comment, and wondered why she bothered having any kids at all, especially after the sooooo bored' comment.

My baby's due mid August, and she suggested to me to come back at the end of September! Can you believe it, my first child and she is suggesting (due to probable boredom) that I'll be back a month later:rolleyes: I don't have a crystal ball, but I 'know' I'll be smitten with this baby and will probably never return, haha!

what i was advised to do was to say i only wanted 6mths leave and then if i wanted to extend it i could
if you say you are going to take say 1 year off then your employer doesnt have to take you back before that time if they dont want to so its better to say a shorter time then extend if you want
you can only extend once though

i extended mine to 12months and im due to go back in 2 weeks but i just handed in my resignation letter today
