View Full Version : Cleaning your Iron
Well I must be bored lol
Last week while ironing, my iron had a fit and all this crud came out lots and lots of brown flakes and ruined what I was ironing so had to be washed again, same thing today brown water. So I went and bought Iron Cleaner OMG:eek: My iron was disgusting so much calcium came out, naughty me never pulls the de-scale stick thingy. My initial thought was “oh new iron” :D but then thought well this is a good iron not old.
So I am wondering how often do you clean you iron? Do you clean your iron!
Do you think if we took better care of our irons and kettles they would last longer? Now I want to do my kettle lol

See if you can guess if I'm into ironing (and the cleaning of it) or not...
Scene...take out the iron and ironing board...
Jesse (4) "What's that Mummy?"
Me "I'm not really that sure but apparently I'm supposed to use it once in a while!" and now I can add..."and clean it" to the list of things I'm supposed to do as a 'grown up'!!

I do iron pretty regularly, just DH's work shirts.
But when my old iron stuck to the el-cheapo ironing board cover I'd just bought, and there was this green burnt fabric all over it....... I...... bought a new iron :o I got a Bi-Lo brand iron for $10!!! So far it's lasted me about 7 months!

Well, I clean my iron once a month or so, we don't do much ironing (thank goodness for dryers!). A great tip for cleaning the scale off your kettle is this - put three cups of water and one cup white vinegar and boil. Let it cool down for 15 mins then boil again. You will be amazed!! Make sure you rinse it out well before the next cup of tea!:D

Do you clean your iron!
Do I what my what
Maybe once I have had the baby I will no longer need my iron lol I will just be tooooooooo busy :D
This is seriously worrying. I joined bubhub thinking I'd make contact with some people who are having similar experiences to mine, a place for support, chat, a few jokes.
Now I discover that I've spent the last six months hanging around in cyber space with these demented ironing freaks. And not only do they iron, but they clean their irons!!!! Domestic goddesses or what??! Nigella, eat your heart out.
I think I might just faint.
Really Bron I joined in the hope I could find out about peoples home life and how dirty or clean they are.
I just want to fit in!!! :p

DM I'm really glad you posted this - I've spent ages in the ironing / washing section of the supermarket trying to find iron cleaner and they don't seem to have it - I never thought of trying Myer.
Does it come with instructions? I can just about manage to put the water in it and turn it on, but I never do more for it than that.
Now I just have to remember where I put the iron
Yep tis very easy has the instructions on the back :D
Gosh never thought my ironing thread would reach two pages lol

Me, iron:laughing: I don't even know where our iron is. Don't think we've unpacked it since we moved in 6mths ago:eek:. I discovered a great trick when I worked in fashion years ago. Before you buy an item of clothing scrunch it up in your hand & hold it for a minute. When you let go, if it is wrinkled you pop it back on the rack, if not then you buy it:D Either that or you pop it in the dryer for a while & it comes out wrinkle free:cool:

Ladies -- you don't need to buy iron cleaner ! :D a tablespoon of vingar in your irons water, set on hot and super steam will clean it out (when done tip the remainder back out and replace with normal water).
To prevent having to clean it all together just use distilled water. (mind you distilled water is more exy than a tablespoon of vinegar once a month).

I clean my kettle about once a week (it was about once a month before I was using it so much for babies boiled water) and my iron about twice a year - it only gets used about 6 times a year!! I forgot to say, I too use vinegar to clean them both!! My iron does have some self cleaning process I can use but I just haven't had the urge to figure it out yet :D
I have had both my iron and my kettle since I moved out of home 10 years ago and they are still fantastic to this day.

Darn & here i was thinking i would be the hero & tell everyone to use vinegar !
Oh wells !
Our evil iron gets used once a week unfortunately but is currently sitting in my lounge room taunting me as i have new curtains to fix !!!!!
I curse Barry for having to wear shirts, ties & suits *sigh* !!!!!
Otherwise our stuff is taken out of the machine "shaken" & hung to dry then folded & put away who needs an iron !!!!!!!

I throw it away and buy a new one - about every 2 years!!!!
Tee hee, I'm with you Allyoo! The vinegar saves the day! Lol! As for cleaning it, we do it when it needs it. I think it's been about once since we brought is 3 years ago LOL!

Phew, now I feel like less of a freak. I use distilled water in my iron. I was wondering about all this cleaning business and thought there was a vital domestic skill I was lacking.
Thanks Rhoxie for saving me from more anxiety
I knew about the vinger but I was worried that it would linger and then all our clothes would smell like we had been at the chip shop a little to long lol

I buy and wear clothes that don't need ironing. My DH irons his own shirts etc each morning.
I use my iron for patchwork, but a part from that I don't really use it. And shamefully can say I have never cleaned my iron

How do you ladies clean your kettles? I wrecked mine by scrubbing it, but thats how my mum taught me to do it.

I just use the kettle cleaner from Woollies. It does the job well. But I'd like to know a better way that doesn't use chemicals
