In my area a civil celebrant can cost anywhere from around $500 to $1000.
A cheaper option may be a registry wedding or a Church (if your so inclined)
Ours was $300 in April 2004. I have heard that most of the celebrants here on the Coast now charge between $400 and $500.
I've gotten quotes from around $200 up to $600, so it varies a lot.
Get a few quotes from celebrants near to where you want to get married. If you have them travelling to marry you they may charge more.
And if you get a quote from someone you like but its a bit expensive, tell them you only want a very simple ceremony and can they reduce their quote.
No harm in asking and the worst they can say is no.
Good luck with you planning.

Ours was $200 - $300 iirc. Very simple, in our living room.

In Sydney it should only be around $250-$300 but not sure where you are.
Our celebrant cost us $300. I ring every one in the phone book they started at $300 and went all the way up to $1400. Just do a ring around.

I paid $400 for my celebrant even though I found a couple that were cheaper, and I'm really glad that I went with him, he was excellent :)
