View Full Version : Weird smelling sweat
My baby smells funny :footinmouth:
He has always been a very sweaty baby and with the heat wave Perth is having it's even worse but over the last week I have noticed when he gets sweaty he smells really weird (how bad do I sound lol).. It's almost a sweet smell but not in a nice way. So hard to describe. It is really really strong too. He currently is sleeping on his cot matress next to my bed and I can smell it when I walk into my room..
Is it something I should get checked out? Is it possibly because his diet consists of mainly milk atm (teething, growthspurts etc meaning he is not eating a lot atm).. It's just not a nice smell..
I gave him a bath earlier and washed his hair etc but within about 10minutes of getting out he was already starting to smell funny again..
Yes I would get it checked out, just for your peace of mind. I had a bub who sweated profusely and her hair smelt awful :( I finally found that tea tree oil shampoo would get rid of the smell. We lived in Rockhampton and I had to wash her hair every single day in summer.

Hi there Myztik,
My DD2 also has a very strange sweat smell, Like you said, sweet but not pleasant. I have to change Maddies bed most days as she sweats profusly.
My family can smell it too and always want to bath her :( poor little darling. She cant help it.
I have wondered if there is an underlying problem also:confused:
I'm so glad he's not the only one! I know that sounds bad but I felt weird posting this to start with lol.
2sweetgirls I know what you mean about changing the bedding every day.
Bluey I will try the tea tree shampoo, thanks :) We normally use it on the boys but I haven't bought anymore since I ran out a few months ago (use it during school terms to keep head lice away) must get some more.

I'd pop along to the Dr.
There are many many many reasons why people's sweat stinks, but it is also a symptom of diabetes along with drinking copious amounts of water and peeing heaps, followed by weight lose
Don't panic - there are lot I repeat lots of reasons - but this is just one reason
the sweat is a sweat (as in sugar) smell to almost a alcohol/methanol type smell.
It was what we noticed (and sometimes still do) about Sis#1 who is a diabetic
cr*p I shouldn't have googled... I was trying so hard not too.. It came up with heaps pf links for juvenile diabetes. He doesn't have any of the other symptoms listed though so I'm not going to freak out lol.
Thanks Kate, I'll see if I can get into the doctor.

haha when we visited the kids dad inr ockhampton when he was living there i had to do the same with Tyra. She had that unusual sweaty smell and omg her hair smelt discusting!
:no:DO NOT GOOGLE, google is not your friend:shame:
:hugs:Take DS to doctors if your are worried, babe.
Could it be a reaction to bath wash? You know how some adults get bad BO when they use wrong deoderant?
:hugs:Take care
hmmm there's a thought there Rowie. I bought some Curash bath stuff for him last week.. Never used it before hmmmmmm might try him with a different one or none at all tonight and see what happens..
I still might make a doctors appointment just in case though.
:hugs: thanks hun.

Strange smelling sweat can also be symptomatic of other metabolic disorders. It might be nothing - but it might be something too. I'd pop along to the doctor for a check up, just in case.
Hope he's okay :hugs:

Hey Myztik, does he drink formula?
My friend had 3 bubs, and each of them had very smelly sweat when they were drinking it. I remember the smell and it wasn't pleasant
When they changed to cows milk the smell stopped (although they continued to sweat a fair bit, still do, just sweaty kids I guess :))

Does it smell like corn chips? That's what my boy smells like sometimes. Stinky socks, or corn chips, or the boys change room in a primary school.
I figured it's just coz he's a boy
Hope yours is nothing serious :hugs:
hey
i wold talk to the pead about it as it can be an outward sign of something going on inside, there are a number of metabolic issues that can cause stinky sweat in bubs, but then also many other reasons KWIM beter to get it looked at but

Could it actually be his breath ?
Squeak stinks of potatoes :barf:
Due to starting the new prescription formula & because his reflux is so severe atm he stinks !
Nice for me to say hey :o
Hey Myztik, does he drink formula?
Nope, he's been on cows milk for ages now.. It has only started smelling weird over the last week or so.

LOL no it doesn't smell like any of those. My mum babysat him this morning and she said it almost smells 'yeast-y' and to definately get him checked out.

Definately not his breath, it's worst around the back of his neck and in his hair..
Don't worry, how bad did I feel starting this thread lol..
I tried a different baby bath stuff and it helped a tiny bit last night but I think thats just because it's a lavendar one and I hate lavendar so that's all I could smell lol.
I just gave him a bath before because he stunk again. It is so strong it makes me feel seedy..
I also read somewhere that it can be a sign of infection, he is prone to ear infections but never been like this when he's had one before. I did clean his ears just before and the wax is a weird colour
Will make him a doctors appointment for tomorrow.
:hugs: Thanks everyone for your help.

02-03-2008, 22:55
yeah possibly an ear infection....
he may just be a heavy sweater ;)
Waiting for doctors to open so I can make an appointment.
He has ALWAYS been a heavy sweater, that's not my concern, it's the weird smell that is coming from the sweat over the last week or so..

Yeast-y, you say? My niece got this when she was younger, my sis didn't think anything of it  but to me the smell was very strong, I was worried she had thrush (but my sister didn't think so).
And smelly ear wax - I've also experienced this, I remember right from newborn that my Curtis' ears smelled weird, sweet - like honey, I told my midwife. She just said "hmm ok!!" and didn't refer me on to anyone. He has perfect hearing and his ear wax just stinks like normal boy-stink-ear-wax smell now :p
:hugs: I hope the doctor pats you on the head and says "you're a good mum for worrying but there's no cause for concern" :hugs:
Good luck this morning with getting some answers hun. Hopefully it isnt anything too serious and just an infection or something.:hugs:
And stay away from google:dizzy:

Thanks Queenie, as much as I hate going to the doctors for no reason I do hope there is nothing wrong :hugs:

How did you go with getting an appointment Nel? Is Kai ok?
Hey, any luck at doctors Myztic
can't get in til tomorrow :( I'm bathing him 2 or 3 times a day and washing his hair each time and he still smells..
Thanks for asking ladies :) Will let you know as soon as I get back tomorrow
Good luck with the Doctors. Hope it's nothing to be to concerned about.
Ok just got back from the doctors.
He does have an ear infection and is now on AB's again (this would be his 9th or 10th ear infection in his little life), they did a hearing test which showed one side not responding as well as it should so will have another test once the infection is cleared up.
He also has to fast as of tomorrow morning and then go for a blood test to rule out diabetes :( Does anyone know how they do the blood tests on toddlers? Is it the same as adults? I dont know how well I'll handle that :(
She said he's overweight  he weighs 14.2kgs and is 86cm tall..

 oh dear! :hugs: Listen, my daughter had a blood test when she was 2, and the fact is that a blood test doesn't hurt like a vaccination or local anaesthetic (as you would know) so as long as the arm is immobilised so the person can get the vein, and the kid is totally distracted, it can usually go alright. I was amazed at how brave Vallerie was through hers.
Getting someone else to hold his arm firmly but gently, and then having him look the other way directly into your face, and then you have him blow bubbles - or you blow bubbles at him - will help. Blowing bubbles means he takes big deep breaths and exhales deeply too, all these things help reduce pain perception and stress. :hugs:
Secondly - Hmmph I hate when docs say a baby/toddler is 'overweight'.... do you think he "looks" overweight? What are you meant to do, give him lettuce sandwiches for lunch and Diet Soup for dinner? You're a good mum, I'm sure you take care to feed your kids properly. And if it is diabetes then that would be a symptom - so maybe she's doing the blood test because she's seeing more than one symptom of diabetes, KWIM? :hugs: How bloody stressful! You poor thing :hugs:
OH PS DO NOT GOOGLE, I REPEAT, DO NOT GOOGLE - IN THIS SITUATION, GOOGLE IS NOT YOUR FRIEND :hugs:

Hi, I hope everything is all OK with DS. My DS had to have a blood test in November as it turned out he had an iron deficiency. Anyway, he sat on my knee and I held him from behind, and DH held his arms from the front so the nurse could put the needle in - vein in elbow, just like us. He had to have 3 vials filled so it took a while, and he was quite distressed afterwards. You definitely need to have another adult with you. Good luck and lots of :hugs:
:hugs: Thanks guys.
DF has the morning off so he can come with me although he'll probably be a bigger mess than me lol.
Queen I don't think he looks overweight, he's got the typical toddler belly but he's just a stocky little tank lol.. He barely eats anything atm which makes it even weirder. I've just gone and gotten vitamin thingies to help with his appetite etc..
This is him last month.. He doesn't look any different now..

Diabetes does run in both sides of my family so I do want to rule it out sooner rather than later I guess I just never thought it could happen to my bubba :(
Tomorrow is supposed to be a happy day, it's DS1's 6th birthday *sigh*

:hugs: He looks very very similar to my boy in that pic (even down to the cheeky smile!) ie not fat, not overweight, not 'big' at all IMO.
:hugs: :hugs: :hugs: :hugs: I will be thinking of you, hope it all goes as-well-as-can-be-expected and I hope the results turn out there's no problem.
Nel try not not worry too much hun:hugs::hugs: I know its hard not to as a parent but atleast if it is diabetes then it has been picked up nice and early, making it easier for him to adjust to it while he is little.
Take care hun, you know I am here if you need to talk.:hugs::hugs:
ETA - that gorgeous little man of yours is NOT overweight. I have seen him with my own eyes.
Thanks Queen and De :hugs:

Did the doctor actually LOOK at him when she said he's overweight? Or just look at the stupid charts? Those charts are stupid, they don't take into account things like bone density....... he doesn't look overweight at all  In fact he looks quite slim.
Good luck with the bood test results, I hope it's all nothing xx

the hospital where DS1 has had blood tests from they used numbing patches on hes arms so that he couldn't feel it.
you can get them at the chemist (EMLA???) they just need to go on 45 minutes before the actual blood test
Hope you little boys ok and hes not overweight at all
Phin - nah she was going by the chart. She kinda said it in a joking way but still.
Thanks rachael I'll have a look at the chemist when I go there tonight.
:hugs: OMG Myztic:hugs:
Good luck, I do not know what else to say:(
Keep us informed. I hope all goes well tomorrow.
BTW Your DS is far from overweight...he looks gorgeous, and far from chubby.
:hugs:I am off to work now, I will check in when I get home about 12-1am if you wanna chat PM me;)
And as I said before DO NOT GOOGLE.
Take care, babe, and do not stress:hugs:
I wish I could do more....xoxoxooxoxox
Thanks Rowie :hugs: I think I'd be freaking a hell of a lot more if it weren't for the support of you wonderful ladies

My 4.5yr old daughter has odd smelly sweat too. She is also sweet and yeasty. Always has been. Shes tall and skinny and doenst show any signs of diabeties at all.
Ive always been interested in the smell, but as she's aparently healthy energetic normal little girl Im not overly worried. Just curious.
I too have sweet smelling sweat from my chest. When I take my bra off at night, I can smell it. I however, am overweight, but neither of us have thrush.
My daughter's room smells of her weird smell. Im interested to know how you go and also am wondering if maybe I should talk to the GP about her now you have me interested. I too am resisting google, bad bad move there. Much too scary.
Thanks Ally :hugs: I hope Squeak is ok!!
Suzie it might be worth just mentioning it to your GP. I hope it's nothing as like you said your DD is healthy etc anyways.
We went for the blood test this morning and it was horrible :( He was so brave and only cried for a minute but it was so hard holding him still when all he wanted to do was turn around and cuddle me. He's spent the morning telling me 'sore' and pointing to his arm and that it's 'all done now' He's such a trooper.
I get the results tomorrow so thank god it's not a huge wait. Appointment is at 12 so will let you all know what happens as soon as I get back.
He is NOT overweight..
seriously, was that lady BLIND???
OMG...
when is the diabetes test?
Does his room smell 'fruity' when you walk into it in the morning??
Is he urinating more often?
Is his urine very yellow?
Hope it all comes back clear honey. :hugs:
Oh just read you've already had the test...
let us know the results ASAP.
LOL Gretel.. Yes to everything you just asked  well except for the doctor being blind, I think she's just stoopid lol.
The appointment is at 12 tomorrow and then I have to walk home again so give me til about 1:30 to get on here lol
Myztik, :hugs::hugs: Hope the results come back negative for you!
Your lil man is so cute! No way is he overweight! When you were saying that the doc said that, I was picturing a little beach ball with arms and legs :p so was very suprised to see a normal healthy looking kid in the photo (no one take offence, my imagination leads me around by the nose sometimes!)
Oh and happybirthday to your DS1!
 @ the beachball visual.. hahaha thanks I needed that!
and thankyou for the birthday wishes too :hugs:
 @ the beachball visual.. hahaha thanks I needed that!

No problems - hope both your little men are having a better day now (not to mention their mummy too! ;))
:smiliedance: My bubby is ok!
Just got back from the doctors and his results came back completely normal so I am over the moon :cloud9:
He hasn't smelt as bad in the two days since starting his AB's so we think it's just from the ear infection. If he's still stinky in a week I'll take him back and look into it further
:hugs: THANKYOU ALL for keeping me sane these alst few days! Your support has been muchly appreciated.

Glad to hear your lil man is okay (and you too:hugs:) also yay for smell being gone....
:fingerscrossed:It stays away
Take care:hugs:
Thanks Rowie :hugs:
Just thought I'd update and say that Kai seems to be over his ear infection (last dose of AB's last night) and back to his perky little ratbag self and he smells normal again :yelclap:
I guess at least I know now if I smell that to go get his ears checked straight away  poor boy though, he went almost a week before I got him checked out as I thought he was just extra sweaty.
Glad to hear he is doing better hun:hugs::hugs:
