hi, yesterday there was an ad in paper for mine work. all types of jobs and unskilled workers could receive $1650 per week. this sounds great.
hubby is interested in finding out more but we don't exactly know where to look. one place i looked is actually trying to sell a book on how to get a mining job, costs $20 so if anyone has purshased this before is it worth it?
i also googled a few mines and employment agencies but had trouble finding any unskilled positions.
is there anyone with more info that could help out, or point me in right direction?
thanks
Didn't the ad give you the contact info?
I don't know alot about it but a friend was looking at working in the mines too...they like women to drive the big trucks apparrently....they treat them better than the men!

the ad had a website. when i looked into website it all seems a little too go to be true, it has an application form and also offers for sale this ebook on how to get mine jobs. i would like to know if it is more a gimmick for the person you buy the books from or if these type of oppurtunities are really there?
I got an email the other day referring to the same one I think. It seems a bit weird that the are changing $20 for the book. I think you could submit applications to the mines.
I am sure there are unskilled jobs available.
Yes you can make a lot of money in the Mines.
I have been told by people that work in them its hard to get your foot in the door. I can ask one of the guys who works at one of them, who you can call. should be able to ask him tonight I think his back. He works in the mines for 2 weeks, then flys home for 1 week.
Then some other ones you have to move there. Then most of the time the rent price around the Mines are so high you don't really make that much money.
He all so said he hard to pay to get his paper work done (I thing its to say his safe to work there??), That cost them $500 or $5000 one or the other

You saw Ads for Jobs or did you ring them?
If you saw job ads, but they were for engineers and supervisors. That would give you a phone number or fax number or Address. That would be a good start to get info from diffter mines. Iykwim

cj yes, i had almost thought that, almost. most were with labour hire places though so i guess that would be place to start. thanks again

I was told a good place to start would be rining the Labour hire places. They send guys to one of the mines for 3 months, then if the mines like who they have sent they keep them on. I think it would be a little less money going with the labour hire places as they have to take there cut out of the pay too.

thanks for all your assistance. hubby is going to do the mine induction course and see how he feels about it after that. maybe even the place that he does the course with could help, otherwise labour hire places.
thanks

we are in nsw, anywhere would be ok, probably not nt and WA a bit far too, but dh likes idea of WA. is your hubby in hunter valley nsw?
The hard thing with getting work in the mines is that they do want skilled workers.... It's funny they say they have a major sortage of skilled mining workers and that that pushes the wages up hence also raising what the government now percieves as the avarage wage.
My husband is skilled in many of the area's that you would think are the pre-reqresites to working in a mine but hasn't been underground yet. Ie: Opperating the machenary, carpentary ect but all above ground. There are so many skills you can only obtain once you are underground or in an open cut mine. It drives me crazy when i hear that they bring in people from oversea's because they are skilled.
How will we ever have adequate skilled australian minors if their is no entry level. I know the labouring option is there but should someone have to take a step back and a lower pay to get in?
After 4 years my man has given up and instead is working an operating job he doesn't enjoy in which he is away from home as much as he would be in the mines without any opportunties to advance through the ranks.... I'm keeping my eye out for him though because i know this is where my heart lies.
I have heard though that it has to do with who you know and being in the right place at the right time.
Anyways I also know a few boys who have got in so if it's something he really want i hope you find the right job. Motivation, confidence and persistance is all you really need i think not a $20 book. We also rung different job advertisers for all positions and simply asked what they were looking for...
Sorry if my imput is too much this topic is just close to my heart and i think i needed the vent :ecomcity:
Good Luck

think being in right place right time does help a bit ;) also knowing someone can help...if they can put in a good word for you...but I wouldnt bother with the 20 dollar book! My DH was a 1st class machinist with experience in several things but not 'skilled' in the job ie: no formal qualifications...he now been working for a contractor who does work on BHP and Rio sites for about 4 years...firstly being an offsider (lacky) and now driller, they are putting him through his drilling qualifications too...we have friends who have literally gone through the ADIA list of companies and contacted them all to see if jobs, they have all got them...I think it depends on what you want to be doing, there is pretty much a job for everyone here in WA...If you dont want to contact smaller drilling contractors and want to work for BHP/Rio I think you probably as first step need to go to Skilled recruitment agency/labour hire...
My DH had to have a MARCSTA to get into mines, and constantly doing courses with work and Medicals including random drug tests etc...

my theory is once your in, your in.
the hardest part is getting in.
the easiest thing to do is a rigger's ticket at tafe, as far as i know.
my dp is a boilermaker and that job has taken us up and down the east cost of Aus and soon the west coast too.
not just working at the mines but also coal terminals and oil refinerys and desal plants which are mostly construction or matenance.
he works away now but we have also lived in some of the areas he worked.
he has so many diff uniforms from all the companys he has worked for and now has so much experience.
goodluck getting in!

Hi I think you need to be careful when seeing things like buy a $20 book and it will help you get into the mines.
Alot of my friends work in the mines in WA.
They did a 6 month tafe course, which got them in the door. However they only offer their particular course in WA.
If your looking to get work in NSW, I would suggest you talk to TAFE and see what short courses they have to help.
And I'd get a copy of mining monthly a miners magazine that advertisers lots of jobs.
Also talk to mine specific employment agencies.
Hays have a mining division and Mining Recruitment.
If your interest in mining is money motivated, then WA is where you'll make the most money.
You will also make more money doing fly in fly out then you will if you live in a mining town.
WA is also much more heavily regulated then any other state meaning it's alot safer working in WA.
Hope all this helps :0)

YES!! it's worth buying that e-book if ur serious about going 2 da mines!!! It's not actually as easy as it sounds 2 get a job @ the mines.....this e-book helps a lot.
For the money you make at the mines it's really worth spending that money u do end up spending more to get to the mines- but it's worth it and u make it back really quickly.......
have fun!! yeh the mines is better than goin' on the dole.......:sunshine:

I know quite a few people in the mines and I think alot of jobs are filled through word of mouth. So basically who you know. DF has looked into it and everyone says getting your HR (truck license) is a must and no one will look at you without one. This alone costs around $1000 after lessons. In WA there is always ads in the paper about different courses you can do to gain qualification but I have aso heard these are very expensive to do! DF could get in through my BIL who is a driller up north but he refuses to leave me and DD for that long:hair: Good luck and I hope it works out for you.

If your hubby doesn't have a trade behind him you could try to call up a few of the mines your interested and ask if they could put your name down for any positions for a Trades Assistant, that way you could get your foot in the door! TA's don't really require any experience as they learn on the job... Once he becomes a TA he could think of doing an apprenticeship in a trade (if he doesn't already have one), which the pay more in the mining industry... Also look on websites like my careers and career one and different mining companies, like Rio Tinto and Xstrata and BH Billiton have there own websites where they advertise jobs! Most are fly in fly out, but we are at one where we live across the road from the mine site which is good...
DH reckons the Ebook might be a crock?? Not sure personally, he says to just keep applying which is what he did!
Good luck!!

hi there,
try seek.com.au as well, a lot of jobs come up thru this site. There are also plenty of mining drafting agencies. The hardest part is getting in, from there on it's word of mouth and networking... Sometimes starting at mining focused company in eg Perth and from there move up to the mines. DH started in Perth with shiftwork(12hrs, day & night for 8 days and the 4 days off), now he's up north 2 weeks on / 1 week off. We're looking at going residential, so moving up North as well.....any Pilbara experience any one ?
Just keep applying and don't forget, it takes several months before you sometimes even hear back. Don't give up.
Goodluck

 I know its terrible to be so skeptical but I thought the exact same thing and couldn't think of a polite way to put it.
So i just said did you buy it?
My partner and I purchased a book from a website for $20 about how to get a job in the mines, only to discover that most of the book was copied directly from a tourism website, and the rest was mining and recruiting phone numbers which can also be found on the internet, we felt the book was a rip off and this inspired us to make a website bringing all this information together for free.( http://www.TheMiningExperience.com ) We don't think you should pay for that info. We still have a lot of work to do on it, but hopefully it will help people in your situation.

hi..my fiance works in the mines..we live in mackay queensland and he works in central queensland(moranbah) 2 hours from home..all though he has been in the mining industry for years now it is knowen that most people do get in the mines through word of mouth.there are always advertisements in the paper and most are through labour hire companies..i have never heard of having to purchase a ebook for this(sounds a little dodgy to me)i am not sure where you are based but feel free to email me for info and i would be more then happy to help you out.. shyhunny_69@hotmail.com my fiance is on a roster that is 4nites on 2 days off 4 days on 7 off.he is receiving just under 2k a week and travells from home to moranbah via bus at the start of his shift then stays at camp for 4 days before returning home by bus..he does not pay for the travell to work and does not pay for accomodation as the company pays for all this..as for starting off with no experience the mines are always putting on people with no experience and trains them up..there are certain requirments needed before they will start but i can give you all this info if you need it as i will take up so much space here writting everything..ok hope this helps and i wish you all the very best,xo
