This is how I looked when I just saw the Karicare Toddler Formula advertisement on television.
The Mama Bear says that she was breastfeeding for "oh, about 12 months" and didn't want to switch her baby onto milk from another species - so decided on Karicare instead...
WHERE on EARTH do you think the FORMULA comes from!
:banghead:
Gawd that makes me ANGRY!

I saw that ad and id have to agree with you. I dont like the ad and why arent there ads about breastfeeding till age of 2 like the WHO recommends?
Isnt toddler formula still cows milk stuff?
A friends GP said that stuff is a gimmick, cows milk does the same thing.
But yeah it makes me mad too when bf rates are so low, not much is done to promote the goodness of breastmilk for older babies.

Maybe it's a good sign? Breastfeeding is becoming more popular so they are needing to resort to very stupid advertising in hopes of catching someones eye? :p
Not that I can talk- They caught my eye a long time ago, *shrug*. :p

Yep I've seen that ad. Pathetic. Rediculous. It also implies that 12 months is the most people should breastfeed for, although it doesn't outright say so. I just switch off. Human milk for human babies :)

Yep, it sure is a stupid add. It's been around for a while, it was voted 'most stupid add' (???) or something like that by some mums association for that reason. Formula is based on cow’s milk.
I saw it again the other day. Tut-tutting I was!

There are posters in parent's rooms, in hospitals and in medical centres that I've seen. But there are far more formula ads, but none for infant formulas as there are laws prohibiting the advertising of any milk for babies under 12 months. Could be why they've developed toddler formulas in the first place, so they can advertise their formulas and at the same time inadvertantly advertise their infant formulas when people go to purchase the toddler ones.

Probably because the ABA don't have enough money to have big long-running ad campaigns like the formula companies do... boobies are free, so it's not like the ABA can make much money out of them...:p
I guess with other health-related ads (skin-cancer, anti-smoking, etc), the government gives them some money towards their campaigns, and they probably have fundraising events as well... but I ican't imagine too many members of the general public would see the ABA as a worthy cause... which is quite disappointing.

You won't see any ads on tv or anywhere for infant formulas, unless on the net using US sites. I think that's a good thing though, there are not enough mums breastfeeding as it is without the added pressure of advertising. I just wish they'd stop advertising baby foods for babies from 4 months! It's not recommended to feed solids until at least 6 months.

I think they have changed the labelling. I think they now have from 6 months. Not totally sure, but I think, I really think.
ha ha this ad is my nemesis.
They can't promote formula before the age of one year so this bear says she THINKS she breastfed him for AROUND 12 months? with a question in her voice.
To me that is a breach or a very very cheekily getting close to it. She thinks? for around? so she's not sure? coulda been 11 months? BREACH!!!!
Then at the end she says "so why rush things?" and I always always nod back at her and say "I won't, I will just keep breastfeeding thanks!"
My DP must hate this ad so much, he hears me ranting at this poor mother bear every time it comes on, lol.

Yeah I pity my television set when this ad comes on, whatever's within arms reach gets thrown at it!!
But srsly. There needs to be government-funded breastfeeding ads because:
a) breastfeeding reduces breast and cervical cancer risk
b) statistically, formula-fed babies are more of a strain on the public health system
c) breastfeeding is free and so a much better choice for low-income families
need i go on :p
But as someone said before - no corporation stands to make money out of breastfeeding, so no high-cost advertising will be made of breastfeeding.

Judging from the amount of people under 40 who smoke, the government quit ads aren't working - no one pays any attention to them. So they probably wouldn't pay attention to a breastfeeding ad either.
What is needed is some sporting person extolling the benefits of breastfeeding, rather than formula.

I agree on this to a point.
The image of smoking has changed drastically (:yelclap:) over the last 10-15 years.
Fifteen years ago, all restaurants had ashtrays, all homes had ashtrays, no-one "went outside" to smoke and parents smoked in cars. You lit up when you needed one and that was that. Not so now, thank goodness, and hopefully with time, we will see a breastfeeding campaign that has as much success as the anti-smoking lobby of the last decade. :goodvibes:

:iagree: It takes time to change the ways of an entire society, but it's paying off with the anti-smoking campaigns. It's paying off with the car laws too, finally! For many years people in the public have been campaigning to change the child car restraint laws. Now it's time to take action on breastfeeding, but it will take time. Everything does. We will see changes eventually.

- I hate that they seem to be inferring that if you don't spend your money on overpriced formula (I really don't agree with 'toddler' formula!) you aren't doing the right thing by your kids? what happened to good nutrition from solids and yes, from regular cows milk??? not to mention breastfeeding PAST the age of 1, but if you don't/can't nothing else but formula is good enough?!?
- on a slightly less serious note - I can't stand the snotty attitude of the mother bear! I don't know what even annoys me so much!!! she's sitting on her butt while the cow 'maid' brings in the formula and then she insults her saying her milk isn't good enough! .. really boils my blood :banghead:

I'm so glad that other hubbers are as infuriated with this ad as I am. Gawsh, it just makes my blood boil, thinking of that selfish old mama bear, ordering her 'maid' Daisy the cow around, and then off-handed apologising that Daisy's milk isn't good enough for her baby bear; yet she then gives it bl00dy cows-milk based formula! Sheesh!
"A hard earned thirst... deserves a big warm breast!"
Sign me up for one of those shirts!
Come to think of it - have hubbers ever done fundraising for the ABA? Maybe making shirts or whatever would be a great way to raise some much-needed funds? Anyone else interested?
This ad has been p*ssing me off for ages! :hair:I'm gald I'm not the only one. Even Dh said - isn't formula made from cow's milk? the first time he saw it. I don't really get the whole toddler formula thing. If you aren't bf after 12 months, isn't solids and cow's milk enough?
I've seen the first breastfeeding ad b4 a while ago. It's great. The govt should be doing ads to promote bf! The more women who bf the better it is for our society in so many ways.
This is how I looked when I just saw the Karicare Toddler Formula advertisement on television.

As for breastfeeding ads...what better way to advertise breastfeeding other than to breastfeed in public!?
I'm a huge advocate for public breastfeeding, I don't care where I am or who I am with, if DS needs feeding i'll do so.
Like walking around Big W with my shirt pulled down (I never lift my tops up, they always go down under my boob! And i'm usually not that discreet, i'm still learning LoL) or at the markets today!
Sure I get odd looks, but at least it's making breastfeeding seen, whether others like it or not, I don't care, it's natural and it's normal so I will flop'em out whenever I see fit to feed my DS!

I think there are other ways the media can promote breastfeeding other than ads on tv. Normalising it in TV shows would be a start. I remember a long ago watching McLeod's Daughters on TV and Claire breastfed her baby in front of all those people at a meeting. I think scenes like that should happen more often. Dora was just on here (I hate that show, it's not normally on) and there was a baby fox who was thirsty so they took out a carton of milk and gave it to the baby fox in a baby's bottle. This kind of thing further normalises bottlefeeding. It's rare to find a doll that doesn't come with disposable nappies, dummies, and bottles. I found a little Aboriginal doll at an op shop when DD was a baby and she still has that doll. At about 2, she named the doll Baby Kate. She gave Baby Kate "boobie" after her feeds even when she was young like 9 months old she'd pretend to breastfeed the doll. I think the whole attitude needs to change. You see bottles EVERYWHERE and until that changes, views on breastfeeding won't. Young kids (even those who are breastfed) are exposed to bottlefeeding constantly, whereas they are only exposed to breastfeeding if they see people doing it in real life.

I used to breast feed 'baby fiona' when I was a kid. I thought the bottle that came with the doll was silly ... why did she need a bottle when her 'mummy' had milk for her? Yay for families who don't normalize bottle-feeding, and yay to my mum and aunties who breastfed 14 children in total!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I saw that two days ago & I was furious!!!!
this ad is my nemesis.ME TO
Like Queenie said, the GOVERNMENT would profit surely from breastfeeding ads..... helping produce a healthier country or whatever.... so why don't THEY fund them?!?!
Aaaarghh makes me mad.
There are quit-smoking ads EVERYWHERE, govt funded - surely breastfeeding promotion is just as important?!
Why dont we write to RUDD and ASK that he funds ABA as well as have them recieve donations?
And I need to add...I agree with the_queen

Urgh, that ad irks me aswell, mainly because of the horrid patronising voice of the mother bear

Yeah i think thats because of all the drama of it being claimed to be unsuitable at one stage so they have obviously won their court battle or whatever & are now flogging it
Fake lips for sure ... Im also wondering whether she has had lipo !!!!!
As for the furry boobs Amy ... Yes i would say that would be a prob Squeak wasnt into daddy's chest hair so i think the fur would pose an issue.
But then its in a tin right so that would be fine ... All the magical bear boobie juice is in a tin ladies so quick gather round & grab some quick !!!! It will solve all your childs issues !!!

Busted, mother bear, we are onto the real reason you weaned. :D

What are they trying to say?
They're saying that once you've breastfed for "about 12 months" that you should switch to toddler formula :barf:
There's an international agreement about marketing infant formula, and the wording only extends to "infant formula" so the company gets around it by saying that the bear breastfed for "about 12 months" and then she just casually says she wants to switch to something else, as if that is just the done thing.
There is never a reason to stop a successful breastfeeding relationship to switch to toddler formula. If baby is over 12 months and you don't want to breastfeed anymore, then don't breastfeed anymore. Baby will get his/her nutrients from food, and if necessary a small bottle of full-fat cows milk, or goats milk, or soy/oat/rice milk. Toddler milk is a marketing ploy, intended to sneakily undermine breastfeeding relationships by imprinting their brand onto the brain of vulnerable new mums. Ever noticed how the toddler formula tins look the same as the "from birth" formula tins? It's called brand imprinting. Like how Coke advertises just by having banners, or their logo, in cafe's - no need for any other advertising, just the red colour and the logo. If you see a darkish purple sign with squirly white writing, you immediately think of Cadbury - it's brand imprinting. They bloody imprint their logo and their brand onto your mind so that if you even consider using formula, you remember that you've seen that toddler formula ad and so you're more likely to use their brand of infant formula. They are so ****ing sneaky and underhanded, they're worse than bloody tobacco companies
(erm, can you tell I'm a lactivist at all? :p)

Cows milk is made for baby cows. Human milk is made for baby humans. Cows milk can be modified to be suitable for babies, and cows milk is pretty good for anybody over 12 months old.
Don't be offended Amy :hugs: Having negative emotions surrounding your own formula-feeding experiences is extremely normal and very valid :hugs: The body of a cow makes a liquid which is designed to feed her baby - that's all Mamalicious meant. :hugs: :hugs: Don't feel guilt honey, grieve for the loss of how you hoped it would be, but do not feel guilty :hugs:

thanks queen :hugs: I just get a little frustrated when I see things like that. If I could breastfeed the boys, I would, but it just cant happen
Actually.. where did my post go? ^^^^
I dont get the ad:confused:
What are they trying to say?
They are trying to say that any "normal breastfeeding mother" who really cares about her toddler will put it on to toddler formula at 12 months to supplement their solids
the two options appear to be toddler formula which they obviously want you to think is better, and cows milk.
The third option, of continued breastfeeding is obviously not even a consideration! :p
I wish the ABA would make a spoof of it, saying "I think I breastfed him for around 12 months, and after that we wanted to supplement his solids because blah blah blah whatever it says",
and then the mother bear would say... so then I thought "why rush things? and decided to keep breastfeeding!"
and then she would kick the formula tin in the bin and say
"no offence Karicare"
and from the bin the tin would say
"none taken!"

I fail to see how anything packaged can be better than fresh produce (breastmilk) and how they market it to say that. On a side note though, the ABC ad irks me more, saying if you care about your child you will enrol them into an ABC centre, and implying that if you don't, then you are setting them up to fail in school  that one annoys me far more, but they are both inappropriate. Luckily we don't see those ads too often on PayTV.

I love it when I see another mum bf her baby when I'm out and about with the wiggle.
You know though, in the nearly 11 months that I've been a mum I've only seen 1 or 2 (not including my mums group) mums bf in public.
I also think there should be some sort of normalisation of breast feeding.
I seems to be a secret hidden thing. Wich is very weird.
Also one thing that Realy, Realy Erks me is when I hear someone say "oh formula these days is as good as breast milk"
Good on you formula marketers, you've done your job:thumbsdown::rolleyes:
Oh now I'm:ecomcity:
