View Full Version : Washing Baby Clothes
:o This is the first time I've ventured into the parenting section! :D
I'm only 23 weeks so it's not something I should be thinking of now, but as my bub-cloth collection grows I want to wash them!
But it occurred to me.. what to wash them in?!
I know I shouldn't wash them in normal liquid stuff (should I?)
And if I use powders of the lux flakes (apparently the best) I have to dissolve it all first, but.. hey.. let me be honest.. I'm far too lazy to do this and I'm sure not all mummies in the world do it.
So what is the done thing? nappisan? white king? just sensitive skin laundry stuff?
Thanks! :D

Seriously you shouldnt really need to worry about using a separate powder/liquid as long as you make sure you dont use too much where it will cause a reaction then all should be fine ! That being said im allergic to certain washing powders so i steer clear of them & stick to liquid as it never seems to get caught up to cause a problem.
I used to do bubs clothes even separately to ours but then i figured why ? it goes in the sun which kills any left over bugs the liquid hasnt killed anyways ! So it all goes in together !
Just keep an eye on things in case bubs has a reaction to anything otherwise all should be fine !
Good luck its sooooo much fun when you start organising all the clothes & blankies etc to wash & put away *sigh* cant believe its been over a year now for us :(

You've got "new generation" cloth nappies? Then don't use napisan, just regular washing powder/liquid. Even the old terry towelling flat nappies, if they haven't been used yet just soap flakes will be fine.
I dissolve my powder in the machine before adding clothes....:o and let me tell ya, I am pretty lazy!! I pull the knob, get the water running in there (empty) and when there's a little water in there I add the powder, then shut the lid again for a few seconds until it's dissolved. It means I get to stand there for about a minute, without having to do anything else. And Vallerie knows already not to come into the laundry when I'm in there, or I'll set her to work :p so I get a minute to myself!! I do this because I was tired of finding little bits of dry powder in amongst the clothes when I'd go to hang them out.
I think you can pretty much just use regular powder/liquid on baby stuff. It's like anything, if s/he has sensitive skin you'd need to change to something more gentle, and some people prefer to use the gentler stuff anyway, just in case.
Oh, and congrats for posting in the parenting section :yelclap: !!

I pretty much wash everything separately. DD has to have her clothes washed in the sensitive skin, and I wash DP's clothes separately to mine because I don't want my lovely sweet smelling clothes defiled by his stinky socks.

Oh yes !!!!
I shouldve said that LOL !!!
I keep all of DP's work stuff separate due to nice shirts needing the delicate cycle but otherwise his stuff stays away from ours LOL !!!!!! I too dont like stinky socks :p
I use lux, i keep an ice cream bucket beside the washing machine, before i start the machine i fill the bucket with warm water and throw in some lux and give it a swish, then start the washing machine, when the machine is finished filling i throw in the lux, its not dissolved completely but it will do
hmm I heard that too, but decided to just wash them with OMO matic sensitive which we use anyway (front loader) but I didn't use fabric conditioner they came out just as soft :D it is to much fun washing and ironing them!
Wee!
I don't know if I should wash things today or not :p (Don't tell the husband that I'm excited about washing clothes... washing clothes is HIS job)
I don't have the change table and drawers thingie yet so I don't have anywhere to put them.
But I want to wash them! (I have about 1/4 of a load too. so not worth it) LOL

I didn't realise how easy it was to dissolve the flakes. When people tell me that they're the best, the dissolving part is normally said with an eye roll as if I have to stand there and stir them etc. :)
Hi there,
I use Earth Choice laundry liquid for all our washing. It's about $2 for a 1lt bottle. With any detergents I only use half the recommended amount, coz they always recommend too much.
With DS clothes, I just wash them in with ours. He's been fine, no skin problems or anything. And as already mentioned, line drying means that any nasties are killed anyway. I refuse to use napisan or any harsh detergents.
I wouldn't wash too many clothes until after bubs is born. Just do a small selection for when you get home. You may find, like I did, that they grow so fast that some clothes don't get used at all. Then you can save them for next time round, or give them to friends as gifts (if tags are still on of course). And you'll also find you have preferences in clothes. Personally, DS will be living in growsuits and rompers till he's getting around a bit more. Sounds bad, but seriously, what did DS really want with 0000 denim overalls in Summer?
I have tried a few things and find the lux flaxes do the best job for very little effort and I have been told the liquids can be pretty bad for bub's skin so I'm not the sort of mum to risk that.
Like JodieC I also have a bucket in the laundry I fill with hot water and a scoop of lux flakes before I set the washing machine filling. By the time its full the flakes are disolved.

Like alot of mums here, i also use lux flakes. I have a front loader so i dissolve in a backet, throw it in the machine and than put the clothes in on top. I also wash jakes clothes seperate to ours. Do what works best for you! Believe everyone when they say that you will not use all the clothes given to you because they grow so fast. I have a whole drawer full of clothes that jake never got to wear(have to save for baby number 2) lol..
Cheers

I used normal everyday washing powder, then hung everything in the sun to dry. My Mum recommended Lux flakes but I was keen to do them, too pregnant to go anywhere and only had Surf powder.:o
Kept doing it that way and have never had an issue.
(Seekrit, when you do the first big wash of little socks and jumpsuits, make sure you get a photo when you hang them on the line - they look soooo cute!)

And then 12 months later you dread hanging out a million of those tiny socks and wish you had a drier.:o
I just washed mine in OMOmatic. I'm actually doing most of them today so I feel slightly more organised. They are so tiny and cute and you wonder how they are going to fit into them. Then when they are born they are too big! Oh fun times.:)

When I was pg with my first, I washed all her clothes in Lux Flakes, ironed them and packed them away in one of those plastic boxes with the lid so they wouldn't get dusty.
When I was pg with my second, I washed his clothes in with our clothes and put them away in his cupboard.
With my third baby, more often than not, I cut the tags off and put the clothes on her.

i washed all Lochies clothes heaps early and then put them away in a storage container like already mentioned.
I used what every detergent i had in the house at the time but only about 1/4 of a scoop. And i still do that. All Lochie's washing is done seperate, except i'm starting to do our towels together, i kinda forgot and put them in his normal wash and now all his little pants a furry. Bugger!!

Lux soap powder flakes are great, but a bit expensive (smell nice tho!!). I use another soap powder on the market, called Lectric. Pretty much the same, pure soap powder and all - but only about $2 for 1kg of powder - lasts forever!! Bubs things are still washed seperately, but she's developed infantile eczema - so I figure her skin is likely to be sensitive, so I'll keep doing it until she's a bit older at least!
I disolve the powder in a container with boiled water from the kettle, stir it for about 2 seconds, then poor it in top of the wash - it takes about 2 mins all up from putting the kettle on to getting the load going - not that bad really!

LMAO, this gave me a good chuckle!
I used our normal washing detergent, nothing fancy. By the time I was washing all the gifts and clothes people were giving me (and being 8 month pregnant), I couldn't be bothered worrying about sensitivity etc! I thought if the baby has a reaction, I'd get the MIL to come and re-wash everything for me LOL!

I use homebrand washing liquid. I don't wash the kid's clothes seperately.

If I didn't have a baby with sensitive skin I'd use anything but Amolin is the best!! It's liquid - no dissolving first, it's cheap about $5 a bottle, and it smells fantastic!! Noah's skin reacts to everything, but is fine with Amolin. So now I wash our stuff with it too, because he would get a rash from touching our clothes if they were washed in something else too.
YAY Amolin :smiliedance:

I wash all our clothes together (since bubs was born), and everything is fine. But we have no allergys and skin problems in both our familys. If you have a history of skin problems and allergys, you should wash them seperate for a while in low allergenic/sensitive powder like lux flakes.
I know I worried about it before bub was born, but I thought if the washing powder effects them Ill just change it. God now when I buy her new clothes I just do what sopolicha said just cut of the tags and put it on.
