View Full Version : Opinions
My partner and I have had abit of trouble agreeing on names for our little one (as I am sure, most of you have!)
For a girl, we have chosen: Sylke
but dont have a middle name as yet- any ideas??
For a boy... we have a massive list- and have already chosen Otto for the middle name as it is one of Nat's middle names.
Van
Leo
Marley
Mika
Zion
Fenix
Kymani
Lewi
Sunny
Theo
Zavier
Caelan
(altho those are just my choices... Nat likes some, but not many)
We find out what we are having in a few weeks, so that will either make it incredibly easy for us if we are having a girl, or incredibly hard for us if its a boy.
Opinions anyone?:)
My DS is Caelan :D I don't mind Marley or Leo...the rest don't do much for me I'm afraid :o Kinda depends on the last name too...Which names does your DH like?

How do you pronounce the girls name? Is it SILKY ? or just SILK ? or is it SI-kee ? I've never seen it before, it looks pretty written down, I'd love to know how it's pronounced!!
For a girls middle name, I think you have to work out with your DP if you just want a pretty name that goes nicely with Sylke, or if you want to make it "mean" something, IYKWIM. Vallerie's middle name is named after DH's favourite aunty. I originally wanted "Rose", just because it sounds nice, but together we decided that it would be really nice to honour his aunty.
Your boys list, I like Zion the best. Also Caelen.
I think with naming a baby, although it's nice to have other people's "approval" or opinions, remember that it's you who will be saying the name 1000 times a day! Try this test: stand at the back door and use your "stern mummy" voice to shout "ZION! GET OUT OF THAT MUD PUDDLE RIGHT NOW!!!!" :p

I like Zavier Otto but I'd probably spell it Xavier
I also like Theo and Leo but I'm not sure that they flow too well with Otto...
Good Luck!!:)
We got the name Zavier from the Musician Xavier Rudd (one of our favourite artists) but have found that Xavier is becomming quiet the popular name so we decided that maybe we could spell it with a Z instead to make it abit different.
The name Sylke- well, we turned on the winter Olympics while in NZ and there was sledding on and this Russian chick came up and her name was Sylke... They pronounced it "SIL-KA" but I think we'd probably say it the Aussie way "SILKY" or I like plain old "SILK"- I guess from reading 'Sylke'- she could get either or.
Both Nat and I agreed on Fenix Otto for a boy at the start and then he informed me that Fenix was too much of a hypo kids name... we needed something calm. Last night he told me he likes some of the names I've chosen but today he doesnt like any of them... Personally my favourite boys name is Zion... Nat Keeps saying Dartanion which I refuse.
Argh- so confusing.
Weird spellings don't make a name different, they just make it spelled wrong for most of the kids life.
The names you have chosen are beautiful and you have put a lot of thought into them. Spelling them differently doesn't make them any more creative, it just makes it look like you were trying too hard.
Just my two cents.
Good luck with your decision. :)

I agree with shed. Choosing your child's name is a very personal decision and ultimately you will choose what's right for you...but strange spelling doesn't do a lot for me either:)
whos to say that Xavier spelt with an 'X' is spelt 'right' anyway?
or anyones name is spelt 'right' for that matter. my mum decided to spell my brothers name 'Braydon' instead of Brayden which is apparantly the 'right' way... doesnt mean she was trying 'too hard'. Braydon is his name, and if I choose to call my child 'Zavier' instead of 'Xavier', then Zavier will be his name and it will be right for him...
I dont think theres any right or wrong way to spell a childs name (or anyones name), its spelt how its spelt. No-one can tell anyone the spelling of their name is wrong... its just spelt differently to the conventional version of it.
Thanks for your opinions tho ladies :)

I don't think anyone wanted to hurt your feelings Jessi...but yes I admit I do prefer classic/conventional not "right" names and spellings of those names. Your baby, whatever his/her name is and however it's spelled will be amazing and beautiful:yelclap:
:) i didnt take it as anyone wanting to hurt my feelings... I just though it was abit narrow minded to simply say that the childs name would be spelt wrong, when it would just be spelt differently to the conventional spelling.
Its all good :D Im still confused and have no idea what to call my baby

Okay...so what about Rueben or Chaz?...Two friends of mine just had baby boys !!
For a girl (I know you said you've chosen that one but...) what about Tallulah? :yelclap:
a friend of the family just had a boy and called it rueben... i was like 'noooooooooooo!' as I really digged that name! Chaz sounds abit old school to me... and Tallulah is cute! I dont know if DP would like it or not...

Hi,
with the girls middle name you could have rose but spell it roze
hope you both come to an agreement soon :fingerscrossed:
Didn't mean to offend. Just have a bit of an unusual name myself and thankfully my mother chose to spell it the way most people "guess" it, so MOST of the time its spelled correctly.
By "correctly" I mean how it appears on MY Birth Certificate.
If she had been creative with the spelling it would have been spelled wrong (i.e. NOT how it appears on my Birth Certificate) alot of the time but it wouldn't have ADDED anything to what she chose for me, if you can understand what I am trying to say?
Either way, its your decision. I don't really care how you spell it.

Van Otto?
There are several ways of spelling my first name and I can tell you it is annoying to continually have to tell people how to spell your name. Make it worse if your surname has to spelt as well.
Van
Leo
Marley
Mika
Zion
Fenix
Kymani
Lewi
Sunny
Theo
Zavier
Caelan
(altho those are just my choices... Nat likes some, but not many)

To be honest i don't really like the girls name but if you like it go 4 it! I'm sure whatever you call your baby it will suit him/her anyway and people will love it when they get used to it!
Out of your boys names i really like Zavier or Xavier and also Caelan. Im not too keen on the others :o
Actually out of the spelling Zavier/Xavier i think i prefer Zavier. Less likely for people to pronounce it wrong as its pronounced how its spelt! Its nice for something a bit different, although i dont think Xavier is a very common name. All the best :)
Isn't it pronounced X-av-eya? If thats how you would like it pronounced then I reckon spelling the name Xavier not Zavier. Zavier to me is pronounced as its spelt, you'd be forever correcting people in how they pronounce it. But, its your decison and your choice and whatever you choose at least the baby knows you put quite a lot of thought into it :D
I always thought it was pronouced Zavier instead of X-av-ier, but i could be wrong lol!
Heck I wouldn't have a clue neither, just thought i'd put in my 2 bobs worth. I have a lot of catching up to do in regards to catching up with others in posting
Seriously though whatever you choose will be fine as long as your'e happy with it then all's good
