But the thought scares me..

It would be a massive sea change!!

I dont know anyone in Melbourne I wouldnt have a job to go to...

I wouldnt be able to do anything as i would ave no babysitter there!

But id love to move us there for a fresh start to be a family without so many interuptions from other people!

Can someone tell me about housing down there rental and buying..?? Compared to what you know about sydney..

ATM live just less than an hour away from syney so wouldnt want to be furthur than that away from Melbourne... Maybe less..

Can you tell me the postives about living there!

There are many places to live that are within an hour of Melbourne. It isn't like Sydney in the sense that you need to sit in your car for hours to get to the city-it's a very different set-up. The city is built in blocks and they spread out from the centre. Most suburbs on the fringes are accessible via freeways.
I am not 100 % up to date with housing costs but it is cheaper than Sydney in general.
There are suburbs in housing estate styles but there are also suburbs in the "bush/hills" that are no further than the estate style suburbs.

I love Melbourne (I am very biased though!). :D

no thanks for replying. I have been to melbourne once. And i feel in love with it. I always thought id fall in love with queensland but hated it when i went there. I was at my happiest the time i spent in melbourne and got really sad when i was back here people where different in melbourne. Oh and the trains where alot more reliable.

houses for rent are 20 times cheaper here in melbourne. suburbs that are nice and cheap are altona (near the beach), hoppers crossing, wyndham vale, tarneit, trugganina and many more surrounding. its only 20mins from the city without peak hr traffic.
the houses are good inside alot better than same price in sydney.

i moved 2yrs ago from sydney and moved to altona and loved it, once we got a car we moved to hoppers crossing, and its even better. lots of shops that are walking distance.

its scary to move, but once u move i reckon u will love melborne.

could you name a few suburbs that have their own shopping centre and stuff like that where you dont really have to go far to go shopping or to a nice park. Etc. So i can look up prices on real estate . Com

Are you looking for somewhere with a Westfield style shopping centre?

yeah a big one like that. But also a place where there is not too much of one race if you know what i mean i want a place where there is a bit of everyone there is a suburb near me where there is so many of the one race that there is alot of problems with gang sorts of stuff but the suburb i am in has lots of everyone. I didnt want to sound rude with what i said above but i just dont want to live with stuff like that

We moved from melb in july, we were in moorabbin it was quiet nice, southland 5 mins away, the beach 5 mins away and a few nice strips of shops nearby too. I loved how if we had to go into the city it was a quick trip (not in peak hr)

My mum was in mordiallic and it was quiet nice there.

Seems rentals around this area have gone thru the roof though so you may need to move out further

If you want to be closer to the beach, then Punkbaby's suggestion is good. Anywhere in that area will give you Southland shopping centre.

Chadstone/Oakleigh/Huntingdale area is close to Chadstone shopping centre.

Narre Warren/Berwick is close to Fountain Gate shopping centre.

Then the eastern suburbs you have Knox/Ferntree Gully/Boronia/Bayswater and they are also near a major shopping centre.

All of these places are within an hour of Melbourne and are all on a train line too.

Hi there,
I live in Altona North and the rent isn't too bad here although if I was going to buy a house I would go a bit further out so maybe Altona Meadows. Five minutes from where I am there is a small shopping centre with Kmart and a few shops but Highpoint shopping centre (which is HUGE) is within a 15 minute drive from here. And the city is only a 20 minute train ride. It's a pretty nice area and I think there is a mixture of people here. Also there are a fair few parks around here and it is a 5 minute drive to Williamstown bay which is beautiful. Newport Lakes is a 5 minute walk from my house too. There is also a beach where you can swim in Altona which is a 5 minute drive.
I think I live in the perfect area! But I am very biased haha!

hi there. were staying in Berwick which is the further south east sububs. Its close around Narre Warren, Hallam, beaconsfield, pakenham etc. theres a westfield around the corner in Fountain Gate. I think its quite nice around here because its family friendly suburbs. The houses are mainly divided into estates with its own park and usualyl a nearby supermarket. They've recently finished building a new bypass to the city which takes about 40 mins to melb (depending on traffic). The rent is quite reasonable, depends what youre after. were paying $220 a week for a 3 bedroom house, carport, and large backyard for the kids. So i guess were quite content in this area :smiliedance:

Melbourne is AWESOME. I want to move back - but unfortunately we cant (hubby in Navy). The culture is so much better than Sydney, the people are so much friendlier, you can feel an instant calm in comparison to Sydney. The food is fantastic, the music is better, and well - can you tell that I miss old Melbourne town? :D

Don't forget about the north! Coburg, Brunswick, Pascoe Vale - there is Northlands, plus we are only around 20 minutes from the city and not far from Brunswick Street in Fitzroy for great shopping and food.

Tell him to transfer to Cerberus. :D

One step ahead of you - I already have  The only thing he is qualified to do there is train people in his department (which he has no interest in doing).

I used to live near Chellegoth (Essendon) and loved it. Windy Hill was just round the corner, trained there. Irish Pub up the alley way. Tram stop at my front door. Train stop over the road.

Gosh - that was the life huh?

I love Melbourne (and am Melbourne born and raised) so I'm biased! - I lived in Perth for 2 years and loved there too, but it was just a bit too small for me to want to settle forever, plus DH has many more career opportunities here

I live in Wantirna South, Eastern suburbs, near a shopping centre, lots of good restaurants, pubs, parks, schools etc.. very happy here

it's about a 35 min drive into city but I find there is so much locally that I don't travel into town all that much anyway

oh, just to add, I have a lot of mates in Sydney and I love to visit (wouldn't want to live there tho - too expensive for one thing!) and if you get specials, jetstar or virgin flights are so cheap! you could always go to visit lots until you make friends here
