My 2yr old DS (birthday today)happybirthday was diagnosed with pneumonia about 12 days ago, he spent 4 days in hospital, he now has antibiotics to take ,(he spits it everywhere), and frequent visits to the hospital still ahead of us, I can't understand how he got this, but I have been told that under 2's it is very common, has any 1 else experienced this with their kids.

hi jodie9

He could have been infected out and about. public transport, shopping centre ect. even one of the other kids who has just carried it into the house and not been sick themselves. droplets in the air from a sneeze or cough.

Did he have a test for RSV? (suction up his nose) or bloods done to rule out pneumococcal disease?

The cough can linger for weeks.

:hugs: hope he feels better soon.

miki has had multipule neumonias in her almost 2 years and they tend to linger for a while

all i can sugest is keeping his cot or bed elevated to that he doent chooke on the flem and keeping hios back nice and warm ( i know cold dont cause it but can keep the symtoms around longer ) perhaps even a veporiser in his room

Thank You ladies for the kind words,

my_lot, he did have something done up his nose but I am assuming everything was alright, all the docs said was that he had pnuemonia on the left lung, and they started the I.V antibiotics straight away, but as you know I am used to this hospital thing.:hugs:

Thank you to the other mums as well, he didn't have a very good birthday he coughed all day, and slept.

hi jodie

The suction is for RSV. very common.

The bloods would be for all sorts of things, and to rule out pneumococcal disease, if hed already had the xrays with a fogged lung. . also very common. far more common than meningococcal disease. This is what my dd had at 19 months

Many Drs ignored the symptoms of the Pneumococcal disease that day. One paed ,hours and hours later ,suggested a blood test for it. the xrays showed pnuemonia but she was far far sicker than just pneumonia.

now having two children after her all get pneumonia i know its hard on them and the rest of the family, but still no where near as bad as our weeks in hospital for pneumococcal and the months of recovery to her demaged lungs.

Oh that's no good, I hope he is feeling better soon! :hugs:
That's my worst fear, I can't imagine how I'd handle having my little man seriously sick. :( I get upset when he just has wind pain! :o

Two out of my four have had pneumonia before. One of them was fine in the morning no cold or anything, dropped him at daycare when I went to pick him up (the centre never called me to say he was sick :banghead:) I noticed he was having trouble breathing so he went straight to hospital and was diagnosed with pneumonia.

I still find it hard to believe he was 100% fine in the morning and in hospital with it that afternoon.

I hope your little man get's better soon  Happy Birthday to him too!!!

Pneumonia is pretty common, They are cranky for a few weeks, but get over it pretty quick. It's just like a serious cold with a scary sounding name!!!! Good luck!!

I know how you feel my_lot:yes:, I know about your DD having that dreaded disease, I was constantly worried the whole time i was sitting in the emergency dept that it could be possible he had pneumococcal, but I was saying to myself NO, he can't have it because he has been vaccinated against that disease, but I was still worried, I didn't know that pneumonia was so common though.Do the lungs recover.
