I have a 6 week old bub who is very "sucky" & would suck down a whole bottle of cooled boiled water between feeds which I soon found out was just cos he liked to suck as a comfort (he'd throw up the water but still want to suck). Of course, I'll still give him small amounts of water during these hot days but today I tried him with a dummy & he's a treasure child. Now I'm worried about the fact that when he's awake he needs his dummy otherwise he's crying & will this mean he'll need it all night too (& in that case I'll be up & down all night putting it back in)? Prior to today, although the day times were horrid (he'd need to be nursed otherwise he'd be crying), at least at night I could swaddle him & he could go into his cot awake & put himself to sleep.

Anyway, this is just a long story to ask other opinions on dummies, use of dummies & whether they should only be for sleep times rather than "awake" times.

Hello Jak05,

Im not a mummy as of yet (due May)... but if my baby does like to settle with a dummy as he /she is a comfort sucker i would be giving it to him/her only for the fact that it would make me more relaxed and bubs too.
Everyone has different opinions with dummy use... i was a dummy baby and hard to wean off it but mum said that without me having it she would of gone crazy it was her saviour so i plan to use one as mine!!!

Hehe hope this helps i know you would probably like to hear from a more experienced mummy but thats my opinion.

I hope you work out something that works grerat for both you and bubs.. good luck xoxoxo

2 of my babies had dummies. They had such a strong need to suck that they would have stayed happily ocntented attatched to my boob all day long. The dummy for me was a life saver, and they both got rid of it fairly early on when........they found the thumb!!!!!!

my DS had a dummy for a long time and he was very attached to it! He used to have it when he wanted it when he was little but as he got older it became only for sleep time. I rarely got up in the night to put it back in and when he was older he put it back in himself (from about 6mths). I always said i would never use dummies but they became my sanity saver as my son had colic and screamed alot! We even made sure we had a spare one in the car, at my mums house and a few other places as he was so dependent on it!

My DD now 7mths has always refused a dummy but still likes to suck on things. I guess each baby is different...
good luck

dd1 was a comfort sucker and she had a dummy all the time (night and day ) until she was 2 then we only let her have when she went to sleep.
ds didnt want the dummy - but god he needed it and I really wished he would take to it, and dd2 only has her dummy for sleep time.

If a dummy is going to give you some sanity - then do it. Just give it to him only at times that he really needs it. If he is sleeping fine without it then dont give it too him at sleep times - just when hes making you :hair:

Our DD had really bad wind issues as a bub so we would use our pinky finger for her to suck on. Then it dawned on us... Why dont we just use a dummy??!

It was a great help, and still is, she really enjoys it so I dont see any harm with it.
When she falls asleep she usually spits it out during the night anyway, but it has been a comfort to her very much so, and probably a good distraction from her tummy pains.

If it works, why not?! Even in hospital a nurse suggested it. I think its been great!
