I cannot work out why my DD has such strange bowel habits. She has always had issues with constipation. I have tried every thing to help. I thought once she started solids it would get better but no. This is an example of her daily diet -
FF
pears (some kind fruit) w yogurt
100 ml diluted prune juice
custard with fruit and prunes
FF
asst finger foods - wholemeal toast, cheese, fruit
another drink diluted prune juice
Vegies
FF
Throw in a biccie and rusk too
Do other babies have irregular bowels? She will go well for a week then be consti the next (sometimes squeese out a little firm one) and she does strain and seem uncomfortable . I have asked my doc, CHN I even took her to a Chiropractor but none investigated further nor helped. I wish i could help her without giving too much coloxyl.
Any suggestions or experiences would be great.
(She has an umbilical Hernia too, if that has something to do with?)

Most people would say that going a week isn't anything to worry about but when it is causing them pain then it is. You have to be careful with the straining because babies get hemmroids (can't spell) too.
Okay I'm no expert but here is my opinion. I would start by cutting back some of the juice and giving water instead.
You didn't mention what milk she is getting - is she breastfed, on formula - if so which one. Some brands of formula are alot heavier than others and have been known to cause constipation.
Oh and how old is bub? She seems to be eating alot - more than my 17 month old is. (I know all babies eat different - just a thought though) - maybe a bit too much?
It could be to do with the hernia but I would imagine that the CHN or a doctor would have thought of that link.
It doesn't work for everyone but it worked for me and alot of other mums. Put a small amount of brown sugar into a bottle of warm water and feed them that. With my son I found he would poo within hours of having this. Some babies need different amounts but I used about a quarter of a teaspoon in about 300ml of water.

I was wondering if the juice was a bad thing - I will try the brown sugar idea - Thanks. Oh and She is 8 months old. I offer those foods but she does not eat it all!
She is on Nan formula with the pro biotics. I have been down the road of swapping formulas! We shall see how it goes!

Well try the sugar and let me know if it works. I think with something like this you always try looking at the diet first - wethere you have to add or remove something. And at 8 months I can imagine - more food on the floor than in the mouth :)
Hi
Has your bub always had problems like this? Or is it a recent thing?
I definatly agree with Kamaikia, look at changing bubs diet first, but there are also a few, rather uncommon, medical conditions that can cause problems like this too.
Altering bubs diet will probably sort the problem out, but if it doesn't then it might be worth getting a referal to a paediatrician and have bub checked out.
Good luck. Hope everything sorts itself out :)

Thanks for replies. I will change her diet a bit and then take it to a specialist if we still have probs. I feel it is a diet thing she has only had this problem since i stopped breast feeding.
The funny thing is after i sent this post, she did a poo which exploded out of her nappy and all over the lounge room! So of course she had to smear it all over everything! Oh well I'm just glad she did poo's.
Enough of the poo talk!
Thanks and i will let you know how we go.:)
I did the brown sugar in a bottle for my DS when he was a baby and I wound it worked well. Another thing to watch out for is the cheese and yougurt sometimes they can clog a baby up.
