Ok i did this a couple of years ago and you need the official certificate from births, deaths and marriages to change your name on anything official like your drivers licence, bank account, medicare etc.

Good luck it can take a bit of running around to get it all changed.

Your marriage certificate is an official document..

Most places will require a copy of your birth certificate (Showing your maiden name) and then a copy of your marriage certificate.

I photocopied both documents a hand full of times and took the originals if I was actually going somewhere to change my name (ie: bank )

Most places like my electricity company, super, etc etc had me fax or post a cover letter and the two documents to them and then changed my name....

Its time consuming but not very hard

when I did it (6 years ago) most places accepted a JP signed copy of the marriage cert from the celebrant
only a couple of places insisted on JP signed copies of the official doc from Births Deaths & Marriages

I changed my Drivers Licence first and then banks and gradually worked through the rest over about a month

good luck!

Definately do your licence first

I am stunned people need the official b/d/m cert... I have changed my name 3 times now
(maiden to first married, back to original maiden and then to new married name)
and never needed it !

I wonder if different states have different rules?

Maybe it is a state thing? Don't know. I just know that i called the RTA to ask what i would need to change my name on my licence and they said the cert from births deaths and marriages, same thing with the bank and medicare.

It is a little running around. I had to change my name with castle hampers and they had the hide to tell me I needed to send them a copy of the b/d and m certificate. I reminded them they were a hamper company not a bank

TwoBlue is right.

It's a bit of running around, hence why I still have my maiden name. :p

I'll get round to it eventually...

I photocopied about ten copies of my marriage certificate then got a JP to sign them and certify they were true documents :)
Thats why it took me 2 years to change mine over LOL

Mine you some places were happy just verbally changing it for me over the phone but banks, centrelink and the water board etc wanted to see proof

I actully tried to use the Celabrants Cert to change the name on my Licence:laughing:

How was I to know that it isn't really worth the paper it's written on. I was also disapointed when I did get my "real" marraige certificate and it was just a boring pice of paper. So unromantic:confused:

i have managed to change all my banks, medicare, etc with the certificate from the celebrant. but to change centrelink, my driver licence and my gaming licence i needed to get the "official" certificate from births, deaths and marriages. i payed $26 and they gave it to me on the spot. if you request it online it can take a few weeks to be posted out to you.
