Renting in Aussie

Hiya, we are moving to Brisbane this year and have been told tales of fierce trouble renting a house. Here in Auckland you can find a place on a Saturday but I have heard its very hard to secure a rental and that there is loads of competition. How have you guys found it? (if you rent)

Last time I had to look it took 3 months to find the house I am currently in and that was 18 months age. The average at the moment (read something today) is between 4 and 6 weeks to find a rental property. Hope that helps :)

it is very hard to get a rental here in bris!

we moved here from hamilton in march 06, and have moved a few times, it just gets harder and harder

we applied for a house in bris last week, and there was 52 applications!!!

We moved here April 07...was quite hard to find a rental...the house that we ended up getting they stopped taking applications at 100!!! Narrowed it down to 6 families to view inside the house then we were chosen from that 6...phew!!

All rentals I saw seemed to be only through a real estate company....it doesn't seem common at all to have the owner managing the property themselves - which is what we had with all 6 rentals we lived in, in Auckland over the years.

Brisbane is booming at the moment! Houses are very rare to come by. Me and mine moved here from Sydney last year June 07, and it was hard. We put applications in for 4 houses and got 1 outta the four.... still, I find myself very lucky.
There are always ppl lining up at the door come inspection day, so there are a huge demand.
Also it would depend on where you are looking. More likely to get something further from the City...

Then again, my brother in-law moved here in Nov 07 and they applied for one house and GOT IT! That was in Wynnum. Pure luck?? Maybe....

Thanks for all the replies it is really helpful and I keep checking in to get peoples opinions. Seems like we couldsay it takes on average 6 weeks??
