Hi,
I was just wondering if I could get some tips from experienced mums in regards to the first steps of toilet training.:)

Ryno's Mum - where are you?!?!?

She sings a great potty song - hopefully she will let you know all about it!

As for me - I am keen to hear the responses to this thread - so far I have figured out:

Not to push it too early - when they are that bit older they are more ready and keen then easier to teach them

To make a big song (R"S Ma!) and dance when they do use the potty the right way

To wave bye bye to their business as we flush it down the loo - makes it fun for them

That if they are around older kids they get really interested in going to the potty like the others

Meanwhile - I am keenly subscribed and following this thread for more info!

 It's actually Nemosmum who has the great Potty Song !!!, not I...although perhaps I should get the words.

We are just starting toilet training for Ry (21 months). It started when he realised that he was doing number 2's and would say "POO!", then he started wanting to see it "Ry see Poo ?" every time I changed a nappy:barf: Then I started to flush it down the toilet so he wanted to see it so he could say 'Bye Bye Poo !'

We got him a step stool for the toilet and he asks 'Ry sit Toylit ?' every night before he has a bath. He needed to go when he was in the bath twice and I quickly flung him on the toilet. Last night he was the same except in the bath he said 'Ry go toylit ?'. We got him out of the bath, he went over and climbed up to sit on the toilet and strained his whole little body and kept getting off to see what he had done.:D

Really, it seems to be to be a fairly stinky, messy business but he's doing really well. I'm just letting him take it at his own pace.:D

C'mon S - we still need the potty song !

You do it to the conga line kind of tune:D and it goes like this:

Poo poo in the potty! poo in the potty!

Wee wee in the potty! wee in the potty!

Its very simple as you can see....however its all in the delivery girls so get :smiliedance: and good luck with the TT!

The best t.t tip I got (from this site) is to forget the pull ups and go straight for the jocks - pull ups are too much like nappies and the littlies tend to rely on them exactly the same (we only used pull ups for outings or long trips in the car).

With jocks/undies (for the girls) at least they can feel the sensation if they have an accident.

You've got the song sorted (thx nemosmum!), so here are some more tips.........

* Potty is easiest to start with because (a) it can be moved around (b) it's more their size

* Make sure the week you start you are at home or close to home cause accidents will happen more often than not.

* Ask them to sit on the potty every 45mins - 1hour

* Praise every attempt, every poo & wee, but be really blase' about the accidents (don't make a big deal about them)

* We had a star chart for DS1 and every time he did something in the potty, he got to pick a star sticker for the chart. Then I did rewards for a whole week of all stars (no accidents).

Goodluck!:)

Peaceangel - some great tips - ta very much

Out of interest how old was DS when you were doing this - especially for the star chart - Did he understand it properly???

Jessie, DS1 was 2.5yrs when we did the star chart. We attempted t.t from 2yrs onwards every couple of months, but he just wasn't ready till 2.5yrs.

Every child is different as to when they are "ready", but they do say boys tend to be a bit later than girls.

It's actually a developmental stage when their brain know's the sensation that "they need to go", so until that happens we have to be their reminder.

It seems as though maybe my little one isn't quite ready yet. He only recognises a B/M sometimes, I think I will wait a little longer. Thanks for the advice:)
