I know there are people out there who are very passionate on both ends about NT scans, I just wanted to know who was going to have one and who was not.

We will be having one with this pregnancy, just as I did for DD. I'm not in a high risk factor or anything but I wanted to have it regardless.

Whats everyones feeling on the topic?

I forgot to add why we're having the scan...

I want to know if there is a problem with the baby. In plenty of time to make a decision about whether or not to continue with the pregnancy.

That's my logical side speaking :)

Of course, if there is something wrong with the baby I may decide to continue anyway. I guess I'd just like to know in advance.

I dare say I will opt to have an amnio too for this reason. I guess it will depend on the outcome of the NT.

Yes, I will be having one. Not because of my age though, I am only 26.
Might be my first scan actually.
I have a child with ds. Of course, I won't be acting on any result, no matter the result we will not have further testing. It doesn't matter to us, we want a child, 46/47 chromosomes, pink/black/blue with purple spots, we don't care we will love him/her how ever they come.

Hi Lunar... chromosomal disorders, right? Down syndrome is the most common one, but there are others that the NT can pick up. Am I wrong about that??

i didnt have the NT scan but i do regret it in a way because i might have known bout bubs defect alil earlier.. but then again they say the bowel does herniate out before it herniates back in at around 12-14 weeks so im not sure wether it would have helped me on that one.

It tests for a variety of chromosome disorders but yep the main one is downs.

Yeah my doctor has given me all the referall forms to book in (in about 4-5 weeks, so will book a little closer) I figure I will continue either way, but at least if there is a problem we will know upfront and have time to adjust. I don't think I'll do the amnio even if they offer, as it seems very invasive!

Ok, so I panicked and thought from other posts I should probably book it now, so I am booked in for 31 March 08. I didn't realise it costs money!! She said the max it would be is $199.50. Has anyone else encountered this? I thought it would be under medicare? Any others I should be aware of?

I will have the NT scan - mostly due to my age. We actually had testing done after the D&C from my miscarriage & it showed bub would have been a little girl, with Turners Syndrome. I mc only days before my NT scan was booked & the obst said it almost definately would have shown up. Apparently this is just a random thing (with increased risks as I'm 36) so hopefully :fingerscrossed: everything will be ok next time.

Trisha, from memory, you can get some $ back from Medicare I think. It's not cheap is it?

Hi trisha24,
I was told if i wanted the scan done it will cost me a couple of hundred $ because i was in the low risk category.

I'm planning to get the NT scan, but I'd think twice about amnio, given there's a risk of M/C and the baby may be perfectly healthy even if the NT scan is abnormal. I wouldn't terminate for Downs, so I don't know that amnio would be worth the risk. Although can't say for sure about amnio I guess until I'm in that situation - maybe I would prefer to know one way or the other rather than spend the rest of the pregnancy worrying about it....

Yes it costs. Medicare does rebate a little I think, maybe wrong.
I don't have to pay anything cos I'm automatically put in a higher risk. It pretty silly actually, well I think it is, that I am put in a higher risk right away because of my first born. D/s is not heriditary.
But who am I to complain about getting another chance to see bubby!:bee:

Thanks ladies!! Well that makes sense - sort of! I guess it's worth the money to know upfront anyway, so either way I'll still do the test!

I'm having my NT scan on the 9th of April, 13 sleeps and counting. Dont actually want the test for ds and everything else I just want to see my baby, check how far I am and just make sure everything is progressing as it should. My dr didnt give me a choice about the scan so being bub #1 I just assumed it was normal I'm not in a high risk so I'm not sure why he wants me to have one but I dont really care, I just want to see my baby. DP and I cant wait!!!!

FYI...

I had a NT on Wednesday... it cost $159.50... I got $59.50 back from Medicare... so I'm $100 out of pocket.

I also had the corresponding blood test on the Tuesday, but that mob didn't charge me on the day - they're going to send me the bill - so I'm not sure how much it will cost, or how much I will get back from Medicare.

I had my NT on the 26th March. We had it done mainly due to my age, (I am 33 now) and to prepare for if there is anything wrong. No way would I opt for an Amnio or a CV as I think that any chance for a M/C would be too hard to handle. We think children are a blessing no matter how they come out. At least if it had come back with an abnormal scan we would have had the next 5/6 months to prepare ourselves for it.

Oh,... my NT was $295.00 and I got back $90 from medicare. The bloods were bulk billed. The morphology will be $330. I think i should get back more by then as we should have reached our medicare safetynet.

I'm having my NT scan this afternoon :yelclap:
Main reason is so I can see bubs and put my mind at ease that all is okay!

I'm not sure if I'd actually do anything if they found a problem, unless it was a major problem - that's a decision that I would have to make at the time... But I would like to have the option and knowledge, even if it is just to prepare ourselves.

My scan will be $155 and I had the blood test 2 weeks ago (at 10 wks, on advise from Dr), but I haven't seen the bill yet as they post it out...

Hi everyone, I'm new to bubhub, due (at best estimate) 31st October.
I'm booked in for a NT scan on 23rd of April, I had my blood taken for it today.
I hadn't actually heard about it before I made my appointment for my 12 week U/S and they told me that they routinely do this too. I'm not sure that I even have a choice! Either way, it'll be good to see bub properly and just to know what to expect when baby gets here. As someone else mentioned, I'll love and welcome bub even if he or she is pink and purple with polka dots!

14th April. It's costing $185 plus the bloods. My hospital doesn't do them til you're 38yrs old, so I'm having to go somewhere else as I'm a mere 34. I want reassurance buy I'm not sure what I'd do if there were a major problem. I'm a single mother, so it would be a very tricky decision. There is such a spectrum of downs, from the really robust and able to the incredibly fragile and helpless. I just hope I don't have to make that choice.

I had mine on Thursday, all good! Such a relief! :)So amazing to see the baby, looks so much more like a baby now than at the 10 week scan by the OB.

My scan cost $180 and the blood test bill was $72. Not sure how much we get back from medicare, haven't taken it in for the refund yet.

Hope everything goes well for those having scans soon!:flowerz:

i'm not having a NT scan even though i am in titled to one because, my fist daughter came up with a bright bowel at the 18 week scan. i was tolled that i had a one in 250 chance that she would be down syndrome or have other chromosome defects. we were also offered an embryo sentisis (sp?) but we were tolled that it was a 1 in 250 chance that we would miscarry, so we decided that what ever we got we were ment to have. she is perfectly healthy with no problems other than her extream temper.

No, we wont have one....with the other 3 we have only had one scan which I think is plenty for me:)

The jury is still out as to the long term effects of ultrasound so I am just going to have the 20 week one just to be on the safe side - because I dont really need more than that. Also, there is no chance we would end the pregnancy if something were wrong so there is no point in having a 12 week one!

GOod luck to everyone having scans soon though! It is exciting to see your baby!!

Having one on tuesday 1st april told it will be $144.50 and I may not get any back as I have chosen to have the test and I am not in a risk category. 2 years ago I had one with Liam at a different clinic and It was $75 maybe the dr put something on the note so it looked to them that he was worried about something so do the scan.

Good luck those who are having it and those who aren't. I just want another chance to see bubs :p

We had it on Friday cost $150 at North West Private Hosptal I couldnt claim any of it back from medicare.

We wont be doing further testing if there is any abnormalites.
We used it more as a dating scan.

I had my NT scan a few weeks ago and got a kinda weird result. The scan guy said everything looked normal but they gave me a result of 1/322 which is pretty high, even for my age of 33. I was so confused but my ob said he doesn't know how they came up with that cos the NT width or whatever was 1mm which is normal. So confusing. I don't really think i came out much wiser!! Must have been a dodgy scan place as I couldn't get into the referred one in time. Anyone else had anything like this??

Hi Javic,

I had my scan last week and the results this time was good. 1 in 20K . Anyways it depends on how good the sonographer is coz the last time my results were quite dodgy too. When i went this time i was almost 13weeeks and the nuchual fold meaured 1.5mm which the sonographer said was ok. The fold increases with gestation . Unless your blood test was not so good but they should test you what your risk is on 1. just your age and gestation,
2. Age , gestation and Nuchaul fold
and 3. all the above and blood test results.

Dont worry coz the cut off is 300 for high risk and you are above that. If you are concerned maybe talk to your obs about Amio.. but there is a risk in doing that.

BTW I also found out the bubs gender at the 13 weeks scan... i ddint know it was possible but the songrapher is 80% positive.

lastly everything cost money if you are going private in Syd.. my friends had theirs free in the hospital. My test were $220 ( exl the blood) there was another place doing the scan for $450 .. ouch!!!

I just had mine today, [happy birthday Kirra!]. I was amazed at the detail she could see. Never mind the NT, [1.8mm], more importantly my baby has a heart with four chambers, two kidneys of appropriate size, a brain, an aorta with appropriate vessels, a diaphragm, a bladder inside his abdomen, and a beautiful profile with a nose bone. It's all good! I'm so pleased with the four chambers; that crosses off about 15 things on my 'oh my god no', NICU nurse list. The diaphragm crosses off another couple and the bladder and kidneys removed the final couple of really horrid things. OK, so I'm not going to stop worrying til he's 30 and married and no longer my problem, but this is a really great start. :yelclap:
My baby is so clever he had organised himself a heart with four chambers in only twelve weeks. :D
