A mother charged with killing a 4-year-old boy reportedly sought advice on how to discipline the child.
Lynn Paddock is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her adopted son, Sean, last month. Investigators say the 4-year-old boy suffocated after he was tied tightly with blankets inside the Paddocks' rural Johnston County home. They also say Sean and his brother and sister were beaten repeatedly with PVC plumbing pipe, leaving one of the kids limping.

There are reports that Lynn Paddock searched the Web for advice on discipline. She reportedly logged onto a Web site called nogreaterjoy.org. Run by an evangelical minister and his wife, the site advocates following the Biblical proverb teaching that sparing the rod spoils the child.

The site dedicates an entire section to "the rod" and suggests parents use "a quarter-inch plumber's supply line as a spanking instrument." The site even teaches technique: A swift swat with a light, flexible instrument will sting without bruising or causing internal damage.

The Web site reads, "The rod is an indispensable aid that will prepare him to make proper decisions when he is older."

Apparently little Sean suffocated after being wrapped too tightly in a blanket (as discipline!!?!?!!!:mad:) and he was also beaten with PVC plumbing pipe. :crying:

This woman, his adoptive mother, has been charged with first degree murder.

Yeah, I don't know who I'm more angry at - the "mother" for thinking this is sane parenting advice; or the Pearl's for advocating this stuff!! :mad: Definately I think if the "mother" is to be charged with first degree murder, then the Pearl's should be charged with manslaughter at the very least!!

(My only law-type knowledge comes from.... watching too much Law and Order:o .... but first degree murder means premeditated murder, yeah? And if the woman read the Pearl's advice and from it formed an intent to kill, then surely they're guilty of at least "wilful disregard of human life"? It's like that episode where somebody wrote a "how to" book on murder, then someone else read it and followed the instructions - Jack prosecuted the book's author as well as the murderer)

Why hasn't someone put the Pearls out of business by banning their books and closing their website? They are truly evil people. :mad: The sad thing is that people go looking for this kind of advice and actually think it's ok to implement it.

That poor child! a mother gives up their child for adoption hoping for a better life for the child and this happens!
It makes me sick that some one could listen to that crazy parenting advice!

I am speechless!!! (DH will tell you that doesn't happen very often) OMG I still can't shut my mouth because my jaw is on the floor! How do people like the Pearls get away with this garbage time and time again? :eek: I feel so sad for that poor little boy. He never had a chance by the sound of it.

I have to go wake my baby and give him the biggest hug. :hugs: I love both my boys so much. Josh gets a smack on the bum sometimes but not bare skin! They drive me to distraction some days but that's what the backyard is for. I just take him outside and let him run it off. Little boy crawls it off. :D

I hope someone puts these depraved people away for a loooooooooong time and their children are placed with someone who will love them.

Nothing will ever happen to them because everyone is entitled to their opinion and they are only offering advice to people.....The "Pearls ect" dont go to these peoples houses and make them wrap their kids up in blankets and beat them......... its the way parents implement the advice given, following blindly with no thought of respecting the child as a individual human spirit. They "all" teach the parents needs come first:shame: .

The same problem with any type of parenting manual/technique that teachers/ preaches ridgid routines or timed schedules........they can all be very dangerous .

I put the parenting and sleep school marketers all in the same basket as these creeps:devil6: ...........They are interested in one thing and that is parting you and your money.

I say follow you maternal instincts people and Love/pickup/feed/sleepwith/rock/pat your children as much as you can:kiss: .They are precious precious gifts!

As for people telling you that you are *spoiling* your child - the grandmother of a friend of mine told me the other day - "enjoy 'spoiling' her while you can - because your arms are a long-time empty".

OMG!!! I just had a look at that website www.nogreaterjoy.org and I swear it sounds like a cult. I have copied a paragraph thjat I just read and then had to close that window I cannot belive the absolute garbage on that website.

"If I am in a position where I cannot use the rod, am I already doomed to failure, or is there still hope? Can children be trained without use of the rod?" Absolutely. But they cannot be absolutely trained.
